ALYCE J. (LUMAN) O'CONNOR

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Alyce J. (Luman) O'Connor, 53, of 35 Proctor St., died Friday, Nov. 7, in her home, after a long illness.

She leaves her husband of 33 years, Barry A. O'Connor; five sisters, Pat Zawalick of Ashburnham, Maryjane Goodrich of Worcester, Rachel "Penny" Anderson of Florida, Carlene Craig of Townsend, and Debra LaBouef of Florida; two brothers, Frederick Luman, Jr. of Baldwinsville, N.Y., and Michael Luman of Warners, N.Y.; many nephews, nieces, uncles and aunts, including a special aunt, Lillian Robtoy of St. Albans, Vt. A brother, Robert Luman, and a sister, Gloria Rannikko, both predeceased her.

She was born in Fairfax, Vt., daughter of Frederick G. Luman and Frances E. (Patterson) Luman Chamberlain, and lived in Shrewsbury before moving to Worcester in 1970. She graduated from Shrewsbury High School.

Alyce worked several years as a nurse's aide at Lincoln Nursing Home, Park Hill Manor, and at Mason Nursing Home in Shrewsbury. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She enjoyed drawing, painting her fingernails, knitting, helping children, helping older people, and being nice to everyone.

Calling hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, in Kelly Funeral Home, 154 Lincoln St., Worcester, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St., Worcester, Mass., followed by burial in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, Mass.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Covenant House, Times Square Station, P.O. Box 731, New York, N.Y. 10108-0731; Girls and Boys Town, 200 Flanagan Blvd., P.O. Box 6000, Boys Town, NE 68010-9988; Omaha Home for Boys, 4343 North 52nd St., Omaha, NE 68104-9989; or The Smile Train, 245 Fifth Avenue, Suite 2201, New York, NY 10016.

KEITH LEONARD THOMAS SR.

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Keith Leonard Thomas Sr., age 86, passed away Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003, at the Haven Health Center Nursing Home in St. Albans surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 25, 1917 in Enosburgh, the son of the late Leslie B. and Azilda (Garrow) Thomas.

Keith was a graduate of Enosburg Falls High School and on June 25, 1938, he married Ethelyn Guilmette at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2003.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater where he was part of the first allied forces to enter Japan. He was employed by the Vermont Department of Transportation for 41 years. After retiring from the Vermont Department of Transportation in 1980 as the District 8 superintendent, he worked part-time for several summers for the Town of St. Albans Highway Department.

He was a volunteer fireman for the Town of Enosburgh for approximately 20 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls and was an original member of the American Legion Honor Guard after World War II. In addition, he was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

He enjoyed making maple sugar at his woodlot in East Enosburg, camping during the summer at Lake Carmi, and staying in Florida during the winter.

He is survived by his wife, Ethelyn Thomas of Enosburg Falls; his son, Keith Thomas Jr. and his wife Francine of Essex Junction; three grandchildren, Michelle Thomas of Burlington, Peter Thomas of Essex Junction, and Paul Betz Jr. of South Burlington. He was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Betz.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Reverend Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls

EUGENE "BUMMIE" GOKEY

SWANTON -- Mr. Eugene "Bummie" Gokey, 86, a longtime Swanton resident and most recently residing at Giordano Manor, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 4, 2003, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.

Born in St. Albans, Sept. 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Amos and Jennie (Loiselle) Gokey. He attended St. Albans schools and was married to the former Doris Winters who predeceased him in June of 1987.

A longtime employee at the State of Vermont Interstate Welcome Centers Bummie is best remembered for his longtime association with Bob's One Stop in Swanton Village and for his love of gardening.

He faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps. and was honorably discharged on Sept. 12, 1945. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton and the American Legion, Green Mountain Post 1 in St. Albans. Bummie also belonged to Seventy-Six Lodge No. 14, F & A M of Swanton, Vt.

Bummie leaves his daughter, Judy Gokey of Port Charlotte, Fla.; his granddaughter, Jessica La Cross and her husband Kevin of Ft. Benning, Ga.; sisters, Sally Petrucceli and her husband Arthur of Blandon, Penn., Lorraine Garrett of Pompton Lakes, N.J. and Mary Reed of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, Roy E. Gokey of Lafayette, Ind.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Lussier, Lena Pierce, Rose Ledoux all of Swanton, Lillian Gokey of Feeding Hills, Mass. and Helen Gokey of Burlington; a very special niece, Kathy Vinestte; two dear friends, Bernadette Boucher and Dorabelle Skeels; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Doris, Bummie was predeceased by his brothers, Walter, Fred, Gordon, Arthur and George Gokey.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE, pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Gokey family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

KENNETH PORTER WELLS

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Kenneth Porter Wells, age 60, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at his home. He was born May 12, 1943, in Rochester, N.Y., the son of the late Porter and Arthena (Hartman) Wells.

Ken was a resident of Enosburg Falls since 1996 and was employed as a driver for Northwest Vermont Public Transit Network, Inc. He was a former resident of Tampa, Fla., where he drove a truck for Keeblers for 17 years. He was a very special member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Berkshire. Ken always received a great amount of joy by helping others.

He is survived by his fianceé, special friend and nurse, Nancy Brier of Enosburg Falls; Nancy's children, Katie Brier of Wolcott, Rosemarie Brier of Johnson, and Kenneth Brier of Johnson; three grandchildren, Skyler and Dillon Cochran, and Caleb Hislop; two brothers, Wayne Wells of Tampa, Fla., and Gary Wells of Rochester, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Sandy Bocash of Enosburg Falls. He also leaves behind his dogs, Sadie and Elvis. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Wells.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls, with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Rice Hill Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

LILLIAN MARGARET NARDINE RICE

HIGHGATE -- Mrs. Lillian Margaret Nardine Rice, 89, died early Monday evening, Nov. 3, 2003, at Redstone Villa in St. Albans City.

Born in St. Albans, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Roseanne (Vaudrin) Nardine (i). She received her elementary education at Holy Angels and graduated high school from Bellows Free Academy - St. Albans in the Class of 1933. On May 26, 1941, she married Bruce Carlton Rice who predeceased her on Dec. 3, 1981.

In earlier years Mrs. Rice worked as a clerk/secretary for the Swanton Lime Works. More recently she had been associated with the State of Vermont Library System working as an assistant librarian in the St. Albans and Georgia Regional Libraries. She was a longtime very active member of the First Congregational Church of Swanton where she served as superintendent of the Sunday School and was an officer and member of both the First and Fourth Clubs. She also assisted the church group called the "Church Mice" and along with several other ladies of the church weekly made soups that were quietly distributed among the shut-ins of the community. She was also a member of the Swanton Chapter of the Kings Daughters and was very active in both the Franklin County Senior Citizens of St. Albans and the Hi-Swans Seniors Citizens of Swanton. She also served as an area Avon Representative.

Mrs. Rice was well known throughout the area for her fancy work in crocheting, knitting and making quilts. She participated in many craft shows and won many ribbons and considered her greatest needlework accomplishment in winning Best of Show at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. She will always be remembered for her love of family, music, gardening, bird watching, Bingo and playing cards.

Mrs. Rice leaves her daughter, Karen Conger and her husband Colin of Georgia; two sons, Gary Rice and his wife Debra of West Swanton and Terry Rice and his wife Juliette of Highgate; five grandchildren and their spouses, Keith and Julie Rice of Highgate, Chad and Lisa Conger of Fairfax, Kelly Dufresne and her fiance Kevin Lussier of Highgate Center, Kristina and Norman Senna, Jr. of Georgia and Scott Benoit of Alburg; five great-grandchildren, Samantha, Dakota, Karlee, Zachary and Normie. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Mrs. Alta Nardine of White River Junction; a brother-in-law, Earl T. Hazelton of Highgate; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband Bruce, she was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, May Fitzgerald, George Nardine, Leo Nardine and Lena Hance; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Hazelton.

At Mrs. Rice request there will be no calling hours and funeral services will be private. Interment will take place in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Mrs. Rice's memory may be made to Redstone Villa, 7 Forest Hill Drive, St. Albans, Vt. 05478, or to the Alzheimer's Association, 328 River Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

The Rice family wishes to give special thanks to the staff and management of Redstone Villa as well as The Kings Daughters Home for the excellent care and compassion shown to Mrs. Rice and her family during these past several years.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.

ANNA M. LAHUE

RICHFORD -- Anna M. Lahue, age 98, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2003, at the Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans. She was born Sept. 26, 1906, in North Berkshire, the daughter of the late George and Mary(Paxman) Carter.

She was a resident of Richford since 1922 and was a graduate of Richford High School. She was a life time member, Deaconess and Secretary of the First Baptist Church in Richford. She was a member of the former Rebekah Lodge and was past District Deputy President. She was also a member of the O.E.S. Missisquoi Chapter of Richford since 1968. She worked in the Richford Town Library and Richford Elementary School Library for many years. She also took care of the sick and elderly for many years.

She is survived by her son and his wife, Richard and Patricia of Montgomery Center; three grandchildren, Dicky, Paul and Bryan; seven great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Beulah Hill of Richmond; her brother, Charles Carter of Clearwater, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Lahue in 1968; a son, Howard Lahue Jr. in 1928; a sister, Doris Morse; and her good friend, Hollis Stetson.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Richford First Baptist Church with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St. Richford.

TASHA LYNN SEARFOSS

ST. ALBANS - Tasha Lynn Searfoss, 27, of St. Albans passed away unexpectedly in St. Albans on Nov. 1, 2003. She was born in Burlington on April 15, 1976, the daughter of Robert W. Desilets Jr. and Donna Lee (Merchant) Harrington.

Tasha graduated from Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla., in 1994. She had worked as a manager at Pizza Hut in St. Albans. Tasha had served as secretary for B.P.O.E. 1566, St. Albans. She was a loving mother to Olivia Mercure.

Tasha is survived by her mother, Donna Lee Harrington and her husband, Monte, of Colchester; her father, Michael "Daddy" Searfoss of Loveland, Colo.; her biological father, Robert W. Desilets Jr. and his wife, Tracy Desilets, of Georgia, Vt.; her fiance, Mark Mercure of St. Albans and their daughter, Olivia Mercure; her stepbrother, Matthew of Georgia, Vt.; her grandmothers, Constance Merchant of Burlington and June Desilets Phillbrook of Williston; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her grandfathers, Ulderic Merchant and Robert W. Desilets Sr.

A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 North Winooski Ave., Burlington. Interment will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday in New Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends were able to call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass. 01701.
