TERRANCE CHRISTOPHER MITCHELL
WESTFORD -- Terry Christopher Mitchell, 46, died Aug. 28, after an 8-month battle with cancer. He was a devoted husband, father, friend, godfather, son and social worker.
His wife of 18 years, Patti Cook; his daughter, Sarah; his mother, Patricia Mitchell; and his many friends and co-workers adored him. His father, Buell B. Mitchell, of Montpelier; and his grandparents, Buell and Irma Mitchell of Fairfax, and Hilda and Doug Miville, predeceased him.
Terry went to Montpelier High School and later graduated from Plattsburgh State. He worked with Vermont Social Services at the Juvenile Detention Unit, Woodside Juvenile Center, and the last 15 as an SRS social worker in St. Albans. He was beloved by many in the social service and education communities including the kids he worked with.
He was committed to helping the teens in his care, listening to them in a nonjudgmental way; he was proud of their accomplishments in the military, at a job, in school or on the sports field. He often had the biggest caseload, yet kept on top of it while also supporting new workers and interns. In 1999, he was honored with the Vermont Social Worker of the Year award.
He was always so proud of his wife and daughter: Patti's doctorate, Sarah's academic and athletic successes. He took great joy spending time with Sarah in sports-related activities and movie watching, with Patti creating walkways through the woods around their house and eating lively food, with his dog snowshoeing through the woods, and with his friends talking and laughing. He loved movies, music, trivia, working out, running the roads of Westford, good food, wine, newspapers and reading. Above all, he loved his New York Yankees, Giants and Knicks, as well as the UVM Lady Cats and the Colchester High School football and girls' and boys' basketball teams.
As well as bringing good karma to the chemo and radiation offices, Terry spent the last months of his life doing things he had always wanted to do: going out to breakfast, trying new restaurants, drinking good wine, having a few martinis, going to the N.Y. Giants training camp in Albany with Sarah, going to matinees and spending time with family and friends. His final 24 hours were spent at Fletcher Allen Hospital surrounded by those who love him, taking turns holding his hands and telling great stories about his life. After everyone sang a rousing chorus of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame, " he died peacefully.
In addition to his wife, daughter and mother, Terry is survived by his in-laws, Gene and Irene Cook; his best friends, Wendy Ruopp and Tom Shotwell, his godchildren Caleb, Maggie and Emma Shotwell Ruopp, his dear friends KC Cushing, Jill Gould, Louise Berube, Steve McLaughlin, Dale Rock, Tricia Brett, Janet Dunigan, Dan Conder and the many other loving co-workers he was fortunate to know. Terry and his family came to love and deeply appreciate the kindness and care of Dr. Christian Thomas and Dr. Jim Wallace.
Funny, kind, encouraging, positive, good-looking and smart, Terry will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In memory of Terry, donations may be made to the Northwest Vermont Foster/Adoptive Family Association, c/o Nanci Lepsic, 3949 North Cambridge Rd., Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464.
A celebration of his life was held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, United Church of Milton, 11 am. Visiting hours were held Monday, Sept. 1, 6-8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Milton.
