JULES MAURICE CHICOINE

ST. ALBANS/BAY PINES, Fla. - Better known to family and friends as "Chic, " died peacefully at home on Sept. 10, 2003, after a brief and brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Chic was born on May 13, 1921, in Winooski, the youngest son of Auguste and Odile (Trahan) Chicoine; he attended school in Winooski.

He found himself on his own at the age of 13 and became a fur trapper during the Depression era. He joined the Army during World War II as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, he served as a Corporal for the Regimental Headquarters Company in the Intelligence Division. He was among the first group of paratroopers to jump in Normandy on D-day, June 6, 1944.

Chic led patrols behind enemy lines to obtain information relative to gun emplacements, strength of troop concentrations, and other vital information for which he was awarded the Bronze Star. He acted as interpreter between Army and French civilians. Also, he operated still and motion picture cameras, and supervised darkroom technicians in operating a photographic laboratory.

While in a trench during the war, he made a promise to himself that if he survived, upon his return he would help to found a club for sportsman's. In 1947, his plan was put into motion and he founded the Sportsman's Club of Franklin County. He wrote an outdoor column for the St. Albans Messenger for 20 years.

He was the president of the Vermont Federation of Sportsman's Clubs as well as State Representative for the National Wildlife Federation. He owned and operated several small businesses in St. Albans and retired to Florida and wintered there for the past 27 years. He was the first Vice President of the St. Petersburg Audubon Society and spent 15 years touring North America, identifying and photographing 661 species of birds.

He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Lorraine Marguerite (Guay) Chicoine of St. Albans on July 12, 1997.

He leaves behind two sons and their spouses, John and Sandra Chicoine of St. Albans Bay, and Russell and Denise Chicoine of Rutland, Vt.; his four grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Norman Flanagan of Canaan, Vt., Jonathan Chicoine of Orlando, Fla., Heather and Timothy Kelly of St. Albans, and Amy Eastman of South Burlington; five great-grandchildren, Nichole Chicoine of Molde, Norway, Nicholas Hoyt and Hanah Kelly of St. Albans, and Megan and Joseph Flanagan of Canaan, Vt.; many nieces and nephews, two of whom were especially close, Janet Chadwick of Florida and June Gates of Maryland. Also a very special sister-in-law, Edna Chicoine of Maryland; and a special friend, Doris Cross of Florida.

In memory of Chic, donations may be made to the Sportsman's Club of Franklin County's Make a Wish Foundation Program, P.O. Box 150, St. Albans Bay, Vt. 05481.

In keeping with Chic's wishes there will be no local services. Interment will be this winter at the Bay Pines Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fla.

CLYDIA CLARK

RICHFORD -- Clydia Clark, age 83, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 10, 2003, at her home. She was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Enosburg Falls, the daughter of the late James and Maude (Dunham) Carr.

Clydia was a resident of Richford most of her life and enjoyed cooking and canning, and most of all, loved playing BINGO.

She is survived by a son, Nelson Pollender of Tilton, N.H.; one step-son, Roger Clark of St. Albans; two brothers, Howard Carr and his wife Ruth of Hardwick, and Gordon Carr with whom she shared her home with; one sister, Glenna Juckett of Richford; several step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Zeth Pollender; her second husband, Wesley Clark; a step-daughter, Martha Clark; five brothers, Frank, Harold, Lloyd, Norman and Leon "Tom" Carr; and two sisters, Mable and Harriett Carr.

Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Friday afternoon at 2 at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford, with Pastor Patrick Hoadley officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

GREGG T. PLOOF

BURLINGTON -- Gregg T. Ploof, 50, died unexpectedly on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. He was born on Dec. 28, 1952, in Fitchburg, Mass., the son of Arnold Sr. and Ione (Gordon) Ploof.

Gregg had been employed as a painter for several years and enjoyed fishing, music, drawing and wood carving.

He leaves his son, Joseph Olsaver-Ploof of Burlington; five sisters and two brothers: Linda Newman, Deborah and her husband Walter Gulfield, and Donna Sears, all of Burlington, Arnold Ploof, Jr. of South Burlington, Kenneth Ploof of Colchester, Karen Ploof-Gordon of Winooski, and Janice Ploof of Hollywood, Fla.; his step-father, Allan Ploof of Milton; his aunts: Shirley Blouin and Bernice Walter, both of St. Albans; his aunt, Kay Pecor; and uncles, Reginald Ploof of South Burlington, and Charles Gordon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours were Friday from 7 to 9 p.m., during which a Service was held at 8 p.m. in Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Chapel, 97 Elmwood Ave.

HERBERT "SONNY" BAILEY

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Herbert C."Sonny" Bailey, age 64, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center early Sunday morning, Sept. 7, 2003. He was born in Vergennes, Feb. 10, 1939, son of Ernestine Warner Bailey and the late Charley Bailey. Sonny was a roofer for several contractors and was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his mother Ernestine Bailey of St. Albans; his three children, Geraldine Deal, Jo-Anne and her husband John Craig, and Michael Bailey, all of Florida; one grandchild; sisters and their spouses, June and Roger Fair of Montpelier, Mae Higbee of Ferrisburg, Stella Waltz of Burlington, Ernestine and Armand Chevrier of Swanton, Geraldine and Ralph Nichols of New Hampshire, Joan Bailey of St. Albans; brothers, Robert Bailey, Gerald "Beetle" Bailey and his wife Barbara all of St. Albans; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Sonny was predeceased by his father, Charles Bailey in 1952.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 S. Main St., for one hour prior to the funeral.

Those who wish, may send donations to the Herbert C. Bailey Memorial Fund in care of his sister, Ernestine Chevrier, 14-A Broadway St., Swanton, Vt. 05488.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

RAYMOND A. MILLER

ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Raymond A. Miller, age 73, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, at the Holiday House Nursing Facility. He was born in St. Albans, March 27, 1930, son of the late John and Delia (Gauthier) Miller.

Ray joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952. Following his military career he was employed at H.P. Hood Milk Products Co. for 21 years, then he worked in plumbing and heating for Edward Leahy and Gerald Bombardier. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1.

Raymond married Betty Loou Colomb, Sept. 5, 1955. Betty died Jan. 13, 1994, at her home in Swanton. After Betty died, Raymond sold their home and moved to St. Albans. He enjoyed a morning coffee break with the "boys" at the Red Top Restaurant or My Dad's Diner, sometimes both.

Raymond is survived by three sons, Timothy and his wife Linda Miller, twins Jeffrey and his wife Jeannie Miller and Gregory Miller all of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Jason, Tyler, Ryan and Katie Miller; his two brothers, Lionel and his wife Jeanne Miller of Swanton, Roland "Joe" and his wife Claire Miller of St. Albans; his sister-in-law, Veronica Miller; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Noella Supernault; and brother, Rosaire Miller.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the Miller family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., Burlington, Vt. 05403.

HERBERT "SONNY" BAILEY

ST. ALBANS -- Herbert C. "Sonny" Bailey, age 64, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center early Sunday morning, Sept. 7, 2003. TIM D. MOSS

ST. ALBANS -- Tim D. Moss, 39, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003, at his home with his family at his side. He was born in St. Albans, Oct. 18, 1963, the son of Howard K. and Yvonne (Rogers) Moss. On Sept. 20, 1986, in St. Albans, Tim married Betsy Smith who survives him.

Tim was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy, class of "1982" and for the past 19 years he has been employed at Wyeth Nutritional Inc. in Georgia. He enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling and was a member of the Franklin County Snow Raiders.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy of St. Albans; his parents, Howard and Yvonne Moss of St. Albans; his son, Ethan J. Moss; and his daughter, Morgan J. Moss both of St. Albans; his three brothers, Bruce Moss of St. Albans, Gary Moss and his wife, Cathy of Milton, and Chris Moss and his wife, Lisa of St. Albans; his sister, Tammy Demar and her husband, Russell of Milton; his mother and father-in-law, Hubert and Joyce Smith of St. Albans; his brothers and sisters-in- laws, Shari and Kevin Kalahan of Fairfax, Randy and Karen Smith of St. Albans, and Julie and Alan Norris of Fairfax; his dog, "Phoebe;" and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Cynthia Cook on March 21, 2003.

At Tim's request funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ethan and Morgan Moss Trust, c/o of Vermont Federal Credit Union, 163 North Main Street, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

ELEANOR CLAYTON

ISLE LA MOTTE -- Eleanor Irene (LaBombard) Clayton, 86 years old, died Sept. 6, 2003. Daughter of the late Irene and Antoine LaBombard, she was born in West Chazy, N.Y., April 22, 1917. At age two, the family moved to Isle La Motte, Vt. to run a large dairy farm. Eleanor attended the Old Stone School (now historical society) on Isle La Motte, then graduated from St. Peter's High School, Plattsburgh, N.Y. in 1935. She moved to Albany, N.Y. and worked as a nanny until she married Stephen Frank Clayton, predeceased. They were married for 60 years.

Eleanor moved back to Isle La Motte in 1998 with her daughter, Doris. She loved to sit and watch the boats in the summer and ice fisherman on the lake in the winter. She was a rosie-the-riviter during World War II, and retired from Raytheon Corp in 1982. Eleanor was an avid Red Sox fan, and bingo player at which she was very lucky. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her wisdom, hospitality and love of life.

Eleanor is survived by her sister, Rowena Chludzinski of Albany, N.Y.; brother Llewellyn LaBombard and the late Elsworth LaBombard both of Isle La Motte, Vt. Also survived by daughter Barbara and husband Aubrey Smith of Wrentham, Mass.; Marcia Barry of Isle La Motte, Vt.; Stephen Clayton and Karen Duhamel of Norton, Mass.; Doris Clayton of Isle La Motte, Vt.; William Clayton of Walpole, Mass.; and John and Nancy Clayton of Isle La Motte, Vt.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren, lovingly known as GG.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at 2 p.m. from the chapel at St. Anne's Shrine, Shrine Road, Isle La Motte. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and the Reverend Deborah Laporte will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will take place later in Knowlwood Memorial Cemetery, Sharon, Mass.

Gifts in Eleanor's memory may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association - Hospice Program, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton, Vt.
