HOWARD E. BLOW, SR.
MILTON -- Howard E. Blow, Sr., 75, of Milton, died at his home in Milton surrounded by his family on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2001.
Howard was born Sept. 16, 1925 in South Hero, the son of Daniel and Mary Anna Cootware Blow. He moved with his family to Burlington at an early age where he attended St. Joseph's and H.O. Wheeler school.
On May 19, 1945 he married Mary Jane Aunchman in St. Joseph's Church in Burlington. He started working for Marcel's Trucking Company in 1945. He later found employment with various trucking companies including Guay's Express and St. Johnsbury Trucking. He retired from Norton Brothers in 1997 after 11 years of service with the company. During the 1970s for a period of ten years Howard enjoyed employment as an Independent Trucker where he and his wife Mary traveled the 48 states and Canada.
Howard served his country during the Korean Conflict in 1950 with the Vermont National Guard when his unit was activated stateside but not deployed.
He was a member of St. Ann's Parish in Milton and also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 10417 in Milton. He also belonged to The Eagles Post #793 in Burlington since 1959.
Howard is survived by his wife Mary, to whom he has been married to for 55 years, and their children, Shirley Cooke and her husband William of St. Albans, Howard Jr. and his wife Marie of Burlington, Ronald and his wife Linda of St. Albans, Sheila Conger and her husband Robert III of West Berkshire, Wayne and his wife Nancy of Milton, Mary (Peanut) Howard and her husband Michael of Milton, and Larry and his wife Margaret, also of Milton. He was predeceased by their daughter, Sarah. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. He leaves also his brothers-in-law, Henry Leo Aunchman of Bridport, Alfred Aunchman of Colchester, and Maxwell Aunchman of California; two sisters-in-law, Rita Reed of Louisiana and Edna Kelly of Cape Cod, Mass., as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by five brothers, four sisters and one sister-in-law.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will be held later in the spring in the Grand Isle Cemetery.

DORIS MARIE CLAIRE MORSE
PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA./SWANTON, VT. Mrs. Doris Marie Claire Morse, 76, a native of the Franklin County area and presently a resident of Port Charlotte, Fla., died Sunday evening, Feb. 18, 2001 in The Hospice of Southwest Florida.
Doris was born in St. Albans Oct. 9, 1924, the daughter of the late Arcade and Irene (Lasnier) Hemond. She attended Holy Angels Elementary School and graduated from Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans. On Oct. 31, 1948, she married Howard Morse who survives her.
In addition to her husband Howard of Port Charlotte, Fla., Doris leaves three children, William Morse of South Windsor, Conn., Elizabeth Mazeau and her husband Marcel of Andover, N.J., and Kenneth Morse and his wife Sheryl of Pelham, N.H.; a grandson, Chris Mazeau of Andover, N.J.; her brother, Oscar Hemond and his wife Cindy of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and two sisters, Melina Perry of Masa, Ariz., and Blanche Gaboriault and her husband Armand of Northport, Fla. Also surviving are brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Darlene Hemond of Circle Pines, Minn., Carlton Morse of East Windsor, Conn., and Charlotte and Lyle Jacobs of Fairfax, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Louis of Circle Pines, Minn., and a sister, Theresa of Richford, Vt.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Charles H. Ranges, SSE, Pastor of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton and St. Louis Parish in Highgate Center will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. DOROTHY A. (BOUCK) RICHER
COLCHESTER, VT./FT. PIERCE, FLA. -- Dorothy Alice (Bouck) Richer, age 48, formerly of Colchester and Fort Pierce, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at her daughter's home in St. Albans with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Nov. 1, 1952 in Burlington, Vt., the daughter of Bessie (Spaulding) Bouck and the late Claud D. Bouck. She was employed over the years as a pharmacy technician until her illness. Dorothy loved warm weather, comforting sunshine and the mild waves of a blue-green ocean lapping over white sandy beaches. She so looked forward to the entertaining times spent visiting her favorite theme park Disney World whenever possible. But most of all, Dorothy lived her life for the precious and special times shared with her children and grandchildren. She extended herself to anyone in need, offering a helpful hand when needed the most and always giving to others from the bottom of her heart. Truly Dorothy's unconditional love made the world a better place to live. She will be greatly missed by all of those who had the privilege to know and love her.
She is survived by her mother, Bessie (Spaulding) Bouck of Milton; four daughters, Christine Kilburn and her husband Steele of St. Albans, Cathleen Richer of St. Albans, Carrie Richer of Williston, Connie Richer of Colchester; two sisters, Sallie Place and her husband Sidney of Hinesburg, Claudine Williams and her husband Jeffrey of North Hero; two grandchildren, Tyler Kilburn and Rena Kilburn, both of St. Albans; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, James Allen Richer.
Visiting hours will be held at The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. in The United Church of Fairfax with The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Internment will be in the family lot in East Cemetery, Williston in the Spring and at the convenience of the family. ROGER ANTHIME "MARTY" MARTEL
SWANTON -- Roger "Marty" Martel, 79, died Feb. 18, 2001, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 8, 1921 in Farnham, Quebec Canada, the son of the late Leopold Martel and Evelyn (Lanoue) Martel. He spent many years in the St. Albans area, later moving to Winooski where he graduated from Winooski High School and starred in football and skating. In 1943 he married the former Rachel Brouillette, who survives him.
Roger is survived by his sons, Paul of Rutland, Michael and Marlene of Swanton, Frank and his wife Evelyn of Berkshire, Steven of Swanton, Bernard and his wife Marlene who recently moved to St. Albans; two daughters, Diane and her husband Richard Bergman of Fairfax, and Denise Chadwick of Swanton. Also surviving are two nephews, Gary and Geoffrey Sullivan, whom they raised as their own following the death of their mother Cecile who was Roger's sister; twenty grandchildren, six great grandchildren; four sisters, Theresa and her husband John Coskie of South Burlington, Claire and her husband Reginald Yates of Winooski, Aline and her husband John Schalom of Waltham, Mass., and Marion Defibaugh of California. Two special friends, Robert Scars and Dalton Brown.
Roger was predeceased by a son, Denis in 1948; a brother Raymond of Clairmont, N.H., and sisters, Rita Welch of Burlington, Julie Aitchen of California, and Cecile Sullivan of Waltham, Mass.
Roger was a farmer, herdsman, cattle dealer, auctioneer, farm equipment salesman, deli-manager, retail sales man, restaurant owner and operator, bar manager, bus driver and story teller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton with interment following in the Martel family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. DONALD C. PIERCE
PALM COAST, FLA./ST. ALBANS - Donald Chester Pierce, age 92, a former resident of Saint Albans, Vermont, passed away on 28 March 2001, in Palm Coast, Florida.
He was born 3 September 1908 in Chester, Vermont, the youngest of nine children of Edward Alvin and Charlotte Louise (Woodward) Pierce.
He was a graduate of Lyndon Institute class of 1925 and earned a bachelor's of science in agriculture from the University of Vermont in 1931. He received a master's degree from that same institution in 1948.
He was predeceased by his wife of sixty-five years, Glendola (Dolly) S. Pierce in 1995. He is survived by three sons, Bruce S. Pierce, of Palm Coast, Florida; D. Gregory Pierce of St. Albans, and Stephen J. Pierce of Essex Junction. Other survivors include his five grandchildren Kealie Pierce of Mobile, Alabama, Melissa Arnold of Monson, Massachusetts; Scott Pierce of San Francisco, California; Anne-Marie Pierce of Burlington, Vermont and Abigail Pierce of St. Albans; his four great-grandchildren Melinda Sue and Ryan Arnold, Emily Pierce and Glenn Matthews; and his daughter-in- law Paula Kane. He was pre-deceased by his daughter-in-law, Ruth Pierce, of Palm Coast, Florida.
Donald was a career educator, having taught in the public high schools of Newport Center, where he served as principal, in the early thirties; as an educational adviser with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1934 to 1941, serving in Chester, Waterbury Center, and Torrington, Connecticut; and teaching agriculture at Richford High School from 1941 to 1951. In 1951, he started teaching at Bellows Free Academy in Saint Albans and later served as the headmaster there from 1960 until his retirement in 1973.
During his career, Donald participated in many educational organizations, including president of the Vermont Agriculture Teachers Association; vice-president and president of the Vermont Headmasters' Association; and serving as a delegate to annual conventions of the National Association of Secondary School Principals held in Dallas, Texas and San Francisco, California. After his retirement, he became an active member of the Association of Retired Teachers. In addition to his interest in education, Donald was an active community member and received the Paul Harris award from his fellow members of the Rotary Club of St. Albans in recognition of his many years of public service. He was a member of Saint Paul's United Methodist Church of St. Albans.
Donald was a devoted husband and father. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and an active hockey fan. He was very proud of the role he played in helping to initiate the Bellows Free Academy- Saint Albans hockey program and took delight in its growth and achievements.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service is planned for later in the Spring, in St. Albans, VT. Burial and graveside committal service will also be later in the Spring, at the Lyndon Center, VT Cemetery. An announcement will be made prior to the memorial and committal services. MYRL L. CLARK
JOHNSON/JEFFERSONVILLE - Myrl Hapgood (Libby) Clark, 93, died peacefully at Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville Monday afternoon, March 26, 2001.
She was born in Jeffersonville on Oct. 6, 1907, daughter of the late Thomas and Ella (Hapgood) Libby.
She was a grduate of Cambridge High School Class of 1927. Myrl was married to Eugene Spaulding who predeceased her in 1964. In 1965, she married James "Norman" Clark who predeceased her in 1992.
Mrs. Clark was a past member of the Cambridge United Church and the Jeffersonville Cemetery Association. She worked at the Cambridge Post Office for several years.
Mryl was godmother to Danielle and Jennifer Slayton and always looked forward to the visits from Danielle's twin daughters, Kristen and Katelyn. Myrl will be fondly remembered for her warm and caring love by the Slayton family whom she lovingly embraced. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her, especially Debbie who visited her often.
She is survived by a brother, Harry Libby and his wife Marge of Boynton Beach, Fla.; two step-sons, David Clark and his wife Arlene of Panama City, Fla. and Richard Slayton of South Windsor, Conn.; a step-daughter, Polly Wilson and her husband Richard of Wheatland, Calif.; a step-daughter-in-law Shirley Slayton of Johnson, a sister-in-law Ina Woodward of Burlington; cousins Thelda Warren and her husband John of Cambridge, Clark Dodge and his wife June of Jeffersonville, Wendell "Stub" Wells of Jeffersonville, several nieces and nephews, and many step-grandchildren.
She was also pre-deceased by two brothers, Emmett Libby and Bernard Libby, a step-son Wendell Slayton in 2000, an aunt Christine Thayer in 1998, and a special sousin, Lorraine Wells, in 1999.
Visiting hours and funeral services will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Thursday, March 29, 2001, from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral service at 2 p.m., with Rev. Elizabeth Griffin of the United Church of Fairfax officiating.
Burial will be in the family lot in Jeffersonville Cemetery in the spring. FRANCIS MAE MACHIA
EAST HIGHGATE -- A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, March 26, 2001, at 11 a.m. from Saint Louis Church. The Celebrant and Homilist was the Pastor, Father Charles H. Ranges, SSE. Paul Laroche served as Minister of the Altar. Music was provided by soloist, Linda Bruyette accompanied by organist, Claire Chevalier Hungerford. The White Funeral Pall was placed over Mrs. Machia's casket by her daughter and son, Debora Mitchell and Thornton Machia, Jr. The Crucifix was then placed on the pall by daughter, Debora Mitchell. The readings from the Old and New Testament were proclaimed by Paul Laroche. The Offertory Gifts were presented by Mabel Corwell, Joyce Dragon, Frances Bean and Ashley Meyer.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from Holiday House, Our Lady of the Meadows and the Franklin County Home Health Agency. Interment followed in the Machia family lot in Saint Louis Cemetery with Father Ranges reading the committal prayers. The bearers were Thornton Machia III, Thornton Machia IV, Tommy Machia and Joe McDade, all grandsons, and Clyde Snedecor, James Corwell, Brian Corwell and Michael Corwell. Following the committal service a luncheon reception was held in the Father Jean Paul Laplante Parish Hall hosted by the Saint Louis Parish Ladies of Saint Anne.
MARION PERKINS HACKETT
ST. ALBANS -- Marion Perkins Hackett died on Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Holiday House in St. Albans.
Marion Perkins Hackett, 86, of St. Albans, Vt. was born in Montpelier, Vt. Feb. 15, 1915, the daughter of William L. and Agnes (Marr) Perkins. She was a 1933 graduate of Montpelier High School, a 1937 graduate of Middlebury College. She taught school after graduation in South Royalton High School from 1938 to 1939 and Montpelier High School in 1940.
She was married in 1939 to Edson G. Hackett who predecesaed her in 1980, as did a son, William Bradford Hackett in 1960. She resumed teaching at Woodstock High School for five years and then at Burlington High School for 17 years.
She was a member of the Autonoe Club and Duplicate Bridge Club and Bethany Congregational Church in Montpelier.
Survivors include one son, Edson Bixby Hackett of Stowe, Vt. and his wife Lois, and three grandchildren, William Bradford Hackett of Jeffersonville, Vt., Parker Marr Hackett and Anna Dunley Hackett of Stowe, Vt., one great grandchild, William James Hackett; a brother Bradford Marr Perkins of Calais, Vt. She is also survived by two nieces and two nephews, and five grandnieces and grandnephews.
There will be no calling hours and no flowers or contributions please. Burial at the convenience of the family.
ALESE J. SHAPIRO
HOLLYWOOD, FLA./SWANTON, VT. -- After a brief illness Mrs. Alese J. Shapiro died on Dec. 29, 2000 in Hollywood, Fla. where she has lived since 1953. She and her husband, Jack also lived in Swanton since 1965. Both of them loved Vermont and and were closely connected to Norwich University, Jack's alma mater. Alese loved her gardens which bloomed brightly with her loving creativity. Every summer she was part of the St. Albans "Tuesday lunch" with the girls. This included, among others, Betty Soul and Jean Doubleday. She also worked for 15 yrs. as a volunteer reading instructor with primary school children in Hollywood. Her children, Roz, John and Martha and their families will certainly miss her. She will be buried in Northfield, at Norwich University on July 2, 2001.
GEORGE MONROE MOFFATT
MONTPELIER/ST. ALBANS -- George M. Moffatt, 78, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin. He was born in St. Albans on June 25, 1922, the son of the late Monroe A. and Clara Ann (Berryman) Moffatt. On January 6, 1951 George married Willetta Ann "Billie" Domey.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. George was the employed by the Agency of Transportation for the State of Vermont for 24 years as a highway inspector. He was a member of the Montpelier Post # 100, American Legion, Associated Retired Vermont State Employees, the Vermont State Employees Credit Union and AARP.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, "Billie" of Montpelier, he is survived by a son, Thomas Robert Moffatt of Montpelier, a daughter, Susan Jane Moffatt of Montpelier, a brother in law, Richard Jones of Tampa, Fla. and two grandchildren, Brittany Ann Moffatt and Benjamin R. Moffatt. He was predeceased by his sister, Charlene Jones.
A graveside service will be held later this spring in the family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Vermont Cancer Society, 13 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vermont 05602. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
