GREEN VALLEY, Ariz./FRANKLIN, Vt. -- Elizabeth Cadwell Davis, age 89, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, of a heart attack in her Green Valley home. Betty was born March 14, 1914 in New Milford, Conn., the eldest of seven children of Hazel Waldron and John S. Cadwell. She was proud that her great-great-grandmother, Arternesia, was a Cherokee Native American.

During the Great Depression, Betty had to leave school and go to work to help support the family. During World War II she was recognized with special publicity by the Signal Corps for supervising the production of radios in Bridgeport, Conn. Betty was a Production Manager for Pepperidge Farm in Norwalk, Conn., Downingtown, Pa. and Downers Grove, Ill. She was a Trustee of the County Home in Greenville, S.C. and the Mary Thompson Hospital in Oak Park, Ill.

In addition to a successful career outside the home, Betty made a host of friends because she truly cared for other people. She loved her family and friends, and throughout her life she retained her effervescent personality and a keen sense of humor. Betty always had a dog, and her devotion to her dog companions is reflected in the statement made by friends, "If there is a reincarnation, we'd like to come back as Betty's dog."

Betty's artistic talent was expressed in her clothing, her home decorations and the family portraits she painted while living in Westport, Conn. She was also an excellent bridge player, who could win the game and friends at the same time.

Betty earned the admiration of both friends and family by her courageous acceptance and adaptation to her loss of sight through macular degeneration, her loss of hearing and her battle with hemolytic anemia and bladder cancer. An earlier devastating loss was that of her son who was comatose following a bicycle-auto accident. She gave loving daily care to her son from 1974 to 1978.

For the last 14 years, Betty has been making friends and entertaining them in her Green Valley home in Esperanza Estates (October through Mya) or at the family cottage on Lake Carmi, in Franklin (June through September). When she could see, Betty was active in the Esperanza Estates Bridge Club.
