BRUCE IVAN PARADEE
GRAND ISLE - Bruce Ivan Paradee, 62, passed away at his home on Simms Point Road in Grand Isle Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003. Bruce was born in Burlington on July 6, 1940, the son of Amelia F. Paradee.
At the age of 12, Bruce went to live with his uncle on Simms Point, and started his career as a dairy farmer. He spent his entire life farming on the land that he loved, Ridge Crest Farm in Grand Isle. He graduated from Milton High School and attended the University of Vermont.
On Sept. 7, 1959, he married his school friend and sweetheart, Linda Lombard in Milton. It was at this time that Bruce purchased his first piece of property. He called it, "The Flat Across the Road, " from the home farm. His ashes will be spread on this farmland, on the land that he worked and loved.
At the age of 25, he developed diabetes. Trying to balance the stressful life of a hard working dairy farmer with the challenge of being a brittle diabetic was something he struggled with every day for the rest of his life. Many times he did not expect to see his children grow up, so it was with great pride that he watched his four daughters and one son grow into hard working, successful adults. He welcomed each of his 13 grandchildren into his life, and was often seen with a toddler on each knee, looking at tractor books.
He was a 40 year member of the Isle of Patmos Masonic Lodge of South Hero and served on the Board of Fire District 4, as well as a former member of the Grand Isle School Board.
Bruce leaves his wife of 43 years, Linda, of Grand Isle; and his five children and their spouses, Penny and Michael Howrigan of Fairfield, Tracy Paradee and Peter Riegelman, Andrew and Ellen Paradee, Janelle and Scott Crady, and Amy and Corey Jewell, all of Grand Isle; Bruce's 13 grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Bobo, " Brooke and Ryan Lang, Ryley and Timothy Howrigan, Emerson, Austen, Brennan and Oliver Paradee, Sydney, Sullivan and Coleman Crady, and Jordan and Reagan Jewell.
He also leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Robert Davison of Stowe; and two cousins that he grew up with, Thomas and Howard Parizo; his sister-in-law, Ann Rowley and her husband, John, of Milton; and brother-in-law, Robert Lombard and his wife, Mary Lou, also of Milton; as well as several nieces and nephews. He also leaves a half-brother, Harold Newton, of Georgia, with whom Bruce enjoyed many family visits in recent years.
Bruce's family would especially like to recognize the great people who work with the Grand Isle and South Hero Rescue Squads, and thank them sincerely for the many times that they quickly responded to Bruce's needs. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent in Bruce's memory to Grand Isle Rescue, P.O. Box 79, Grand Isle, Vt. 05458, or South Hero Rescue, P.O. Box 365, South Hero, Vt. 054680365, or The American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, Vt. 05446.
