BETTY T. FAY
WESTFORD - Betty Torell Fay, 77, of Westford, died on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at her home after a short illness.
Betty was born on Sept. 9, 1925, in Torrington, Conn., the daughter of Arthur and Jennie Torell.
She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in chemistry. She taught at the University of Connecticut. She moved to Northfield, Vt., after marrying Douglas Fay in 1950. He was a professor at Norwich University. In 1953, they moved to Essex Junction when Doug became a professor at UVM. They then moved to Westford in 1960, where she had resided since.
In Westford, Betty returned to the field of education and became a teacher at Westford Elementary School. She continued her professional development, receiving her MBA from UVM in 1974. She went on to become principal in Westford, retiring in 1988. She continued to be an active member of the teacher's sorority, ADK. Betty was active in community life in Westford, serving as a town auditor. She was also one of the founding members of the Westford Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
Most recently, she served on the committee to restore the Red Brick Meeting House, and was an active member of the Westford Seniors. In addition to serving the Westford community, Betty enjoyed spending her summers at her camp on Lake Champlain in Alburg, where she volunteered at the library. She loved to travel and visited many parts of the country, as well as Canada.
Survivors include her four sons and their spouses, Joel and Mary of Westford, Terry and Nancy of Stockbridge, William and Jean of Essex and Jeffrey and Marjorie of Richmond. She also leaves her grandchildren, Mylinda of Williston, Hillary of Westford and Douglas of Richmond. She also leaves sisters Myrtle Johnson, Jean Johnson and Anne Franculli; and a brother, Arthur Torell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas, in 1985; her son, Thomas, in 1967; her sister, Dorothy, in 2001; and special relatives, Nancy Maroni and Gus Johnson, in 2002.
To honor Betty's wishes, there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of her life will be held Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Westford Elementary School.

DAZEL T. THOMPSON
ENOSBURG -- Dazel T. Thompson, 102, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with her family at her side. She was born July 16, 1900, in Montgomery, the daughter of the late Edmund and Lillian (Murray) Shangraw.
Dazel made her home at Our Lady of the Meadows Community Care Home in Richford for the past six years where she maintained a very active lifestyle -- always willing to participate in the resident activities, especially a good card game.
In her earlier years, she made her home in Richford where she was a 1920 graduate of Richford High School, a member of the Richford United Methodist Church and Choir, Order of the Eastern Star, Richford Country Club, Bridge Club and Bowling League. She moved to Enosburg Falls in 1973 and attended the Enosburg Falls Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Ladies Village Improvement Society, Enosburgh Historical Society, Green Mountain Folklore Society and the Enosburg Falls Senior Citizens Young at Heart Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Faustine Garrow of Winter Haven, Fla. and Lake Carmi; three grandchildren, Richard Thompson and his wife Susan of Jay, Susan Martel and her husband Christopher of Richford, and Stephanie Garrow and her partner Eleni Randos of Underhill; five great-grandchildren, Ricky Thompson, Bridget Thompson, Jessica Shepard, Joseph Shepard and Nicholas Garrow Randos. She was predeceased by her husband, Ethan Thompson; her son, E. Rockwood Thompson; her sister, Dorothy Jacobs; her three brothers, Percey, Mortimer and Clyde Shangraw.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home.

LAURA E. HUBBERT
Laura E. Hubbert passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2002, in Colorado. Laura was born in Nebraska on Aug. 27, 1913.
Laura graduated from the University of Nebraska and went on to teach in Nebraska and Colorado. She married Myron Hubbert in 1937. The lived in various parts of the country until they settled in Fairfax, where they lived for over 50 years.
Laura taught music at the Fairfax schools, and was the choir director and organist at the United Church where the Hubberts were members. She was also a member of the Eastern Stars and the Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, and two sons. She is survived by two children, Louise Decker and John Hubbert, both of Colorado. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Fairfax later this year.

MARGARET W. "PEG" PETERSON
ST. ALBANS -- Margaret W. Peterson, 84, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning of complications due to heart disease.
She was born in Lexington, Mass. Dec. 18, 1918, the daughter of the late Bennett G. and Wilma S. (Steele) Williams. On April 25, 1942, Peg married Alan A. Peterson. He died on April 15, 1985.
Peg retired as Loan Officer for the Franklin - Lamoille Bank where she had been employed for 22 years. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Champlain Country Club and the Autonoe Club. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge and watching her grandchildren participate in their sports. She was a graduate of Lasell Junior College in Massachusetts.
Survivors include her son, David R. Peterson of St. Albans; three daughters and their husbands, Karen A. and Gordon Amidon of Williston, Susan P. and Douglas Bushey of Swanton, and Pamela J. and Otis Hosier of St. Albans; a grandson, Roderick Alan Amidon of Williston; special cousins, Steele and Terry Griswold of Williston and Ross Ring of Sylva, N.C.; several nieces, nephews and many special friends.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Alan; a grandson, Corey Riford Amidon on Nov. 7, 2000; and a brother, Riford Williams, who was killed in action in the Philippines March 27, 1945.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Interment will be this spring in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery.

ELIAS "LOUIE" D. KARABATSOS
ST. ALBANS - Elias "Louie" D. Karabatsos, 70, a prominent St. Albans restaurateur, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and his wife, Voula, praying with Louie. Louie was born in Kinigos, Pylos, Greece, on Dec. 18, 1932, son of the late Dimitri and Eugenia (Hronopoulos) Karabatsos.
In 1959, he immigrated to Montreal, Quebec. There, he met the love of his life and married Voula Kalogeropoulos on Oct. 7, 1961. Together, in 1961, they moved to Essex Junction, where he was employed as a cook at the Lincoln Inn. In 1963, he purchased Brunelle's Restaurant in St. Albans and operated a successful restaurant, known as Louie's, for 22 years. He retired in 1995 and traveled often to Greece. Louie was a member of the Dormition of the Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church in Burlington.
Besides his loving wife of more than 41 years, Voula, he is survived by two daughters, Gena Karabatsos of St. Albans and Joanne and her husband, John McCracken, of Georgia; three grandchildren, Colton, Zachary and Jenna; a sister, Georgia Sagris of Greece; and a brother, Nick Karabatsos of Chicago, Ill., and Greece; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Trisageon services will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Father Robert T. Athas, pastor of the Dormition of the Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 S. Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
Louie will be transported to Greece, where funeral services and burial will be held. Interment will be in St. George's Cemetery in Sxinulaka, Pylos, Greece.

HAZEL MULHERON ALLEN
ALBURG/SWANTON -- Hazel Mulheron Allen, 84, a native of Swanton and more recently of Alburg, died early Friday evening, Jan. 24, 2003, in Redstone Villa in St. Albans City.
She was born in Swanton, Sept. 8, 1918, the daughter of the late Ezra and Ella (Lashway) Mulheron. She attended the former St. Anne's Academy and in 1936 was married to James William Allen II who predeceased her Dec. 23, 1990.
Prior to her retirement Hazel had been associated over many years with Pearl's Department Store, Swanton Rexall, Ben Franklin's and Softlite, all of Swanton. She was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton and since living in Alburg attended St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church in Alburg Village.
Hazel leaves four daughters, Ellen Beatrice Jones and her husband Donald of Issue, Maryland, Barbara Lea Hackett of Crossville, Tenn., Donna Ruth Marshall-Patch and her friend John Potts of St. Albans and Susan Margaret Jacques and her husband Paul of Alburg with whom Hazel made her home for the past 15 years; two sons, James William Allen III and his wife Jean of Granite City, Ill. and Joseph Ezra Allen and his wife Debby of Swanton; a sister, Mrs. Ida Rae Barney and her husband Gerald of Swanton; two brothers, Anthony Ralph Mulheron and Ezra Mulheron and his wife Lorraine all of Swanton; a brother-in-law, George Rocheleau of St. Albans; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Christopher Allen in 1968, as well as two sisters, Mildred Brennan and husband Gilbert and Harriet Rocheleau and a brother, Arthur Mulheron and wife Madeline.
A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE in St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, will be announced at a later date in the spring followed by interment in the Allen family lot in Riverside Cemetery Swanton.

MELODIE ANN GADUE
MILTON - Melodie Ann Gadue, 48, died unexpectedly at home in her sleep Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. Melodie was born May 9, 1954, in Burlington, the daughter of Donald and Mary McGrath Gadue.
Mel is survived by her mother, Mary (McGrath) Gadue Mauriello and her husband, Orlando, of Waterbury, Conn.; her brothers, Donald Gadue Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Milton, Stephen Gadue and his wife, Cheryl, and John Gadue, all of Waterbury; and several nieces and nephews. Mel also leaves a large extended family, Sherry and Wolf Dubuque and their family, Cassy and Drew Lamothe, and Robert Wallace, with whom she shared a home for the past nine years; her special friends and their families, Deb Geowey of Barre, Peggy Husby of Grand Isle, Laurie McMahon of Georgia, and Connie Goode of Essex Junction.
A special thanks to Tracy Fisher and Mel's very special buddy, Joan Stevens. She was predeceased by her father, Donald Sr., and her sister-in-law, Christine.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Minor Funeral Home, the Reverend Father John Feltz officiating, with burial following in St. Ann's Cemetery. Friends may call on the family an hour prior to the service.
