KERMIT C. McCUIN, JR.
JEFFERSONVILLE / CUMBERLAND, RI -- Kermit C. McCuin, Jr., age 55, passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning, Nov. 7, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket, R.I.. He was born in Colchester, Jan. 5, 1947, son of the late Kermit C. and Marion E. (Rooney) McCuin, Sr.. Kermit joined the United States Navy and served his country well while assigned to the U.S.S. Oglethorpe during his tour of Vietnam. Following the Navy, he was employed as a tractor trailer truck driver for many years until his disability. He looked forward to the special times socializing with his "adopted family" at Charlie's in Cumberland, RI.. Kermit will be dearly missed by his friends and neighbors at Charlie's and the One Mendon Road Complex in Cumberland, RI..
He is survived by two brothers, Jon Peter McCuin and his wife Gerry of Bristol, Conn., and Stephen McCuin and his wife Dale of Sandersfield, Mass.; two sisters, Jan Boinay of Hyde Park, and Kathy Gonzales and her husband Michael "Speedy" of Jeffersonville; a brother-in-law, Scott Munz of Washington; a sister-in-law, Mary McCuin of Burlington, Conn.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many very special and close friends. He was also predeceased by a brother, David McCuin; two sisters, Monica Munz and Mariann McCuin.
There will be no funeral services. Inurnment services will be private and at the convenience of the family in the family lot at Mountain View Cemetery, Cambridge, at which time full military honors will be accorded the Vietnam Veteran.
Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.
SHIRLIE (YOUNG) LAVOIE
BURLINGTON - Shirlie Helen (Young) Lovely Lavoie, 76, passed on to eternal life with her Lord, on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in the Vermont Respite House, surrounded by her loving family.
Shirlie was born on Dec. 15, 1925 in East Berkshire, the daughter of the late Irving and Clara (Longe) Young.
On June 17, 1961, she married Joseph A. Lavoie with whom she shared almost 40 years, until his death, March 21, 2001.
Shirlie was loved and admired by family, those she made feel like family, and friends who will miss her loving, giving spirit, determination to overcome challenges before her, and reliance on her faith to do so. To her brothers and sisters she was "Punk, " to countless children, for whom she cared over the years, she was "Ninny." To her children she was a wonderful mother and role model.
Shirlie was a member of United Church of Colchester, serving as steward and later deacon and Sunday school teacher. She was very involved in building the new addition to the church and ran many of their popular craft fairs. Shirlie was also a member of the King's Daughters and Aglow Women's Fellowship.
Shirlie worked in many fields during her lifetime, including a waitress, cook, bookkeeper, childcare provider and eldercare provider.
She is survived by her four children, Gary Lovely and wife Linda of Milton, Sherri Brunelle and husband Leonard of Huntington, Nancy Japhet of Essex Jct. and Bonnie Lajeunesse of North Fort Myers, Fla.
She is survived by nine grandchildren: Donna Bevins, John Lovely, John, Todd and Robb Brunelle, Christopher and Sara Japhet, Jennifer and Jason Kingsley; 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Shirlie leaves her sisters, Kathleen Spears of Vero Beach, Fla. Margaret Bero of St. Albans; brothers Lawrence Young of Iselin, N.J. and Douglas Young of Jacksonville, Texas.
She was predeceased by her first husband, John Lovely, children Edmund and Diana, by her brother Donald and sisters, Thelma Nutting, Ruth Green, and Elizabeth Macomber, and most recently, by her son-in-law Fernand (Red) Lajeunesse.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 18, at 10:30 a.m. in the United church of Colchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allenbrook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495.
Corbin and Palmer, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Jct., are in charge of arrangements.
LENA M. FALLON
MORETOWN/ST. ALBANS -Mrs. Lena M. Fallon, age 96, died Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 13, 2002, in Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre following an extended illness.
Lena was born in St. Albans on Oct. 29, 1906, daughter of the late Napolean and Florence (Soyer) Vaudrin. She graduated from Holy Angels School and became a saleslady at M.H. Fishman store. She married James E. Fallon on Nov. 22, 1927. Mr. Fallon died Jan. 25, 1958. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church most of her life and a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #321, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit #758, all in St. Albans.
Her survivors include her two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert Gallagher of Moretown and Janet and Richard Lohberg of Tucson, Ariz., five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, Napoleon Jr., William, and Harold Vaudrin, Mae Benoit, Florence Lumbra, and Bessie Enizan.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 S. Main St., St. Albans, from 1 p.m. until the service time. Interment will follow in the Vaudrin/Fallon family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Activities Fund of the Rowan Court Nursing Home, 389 Prospect St., Barre, VT 05641. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
ERNEST W. BUSHEY
SWANTON -- Ernest W.Bushey, 89, a life long resident of this community died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 13, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.
He was born in Swanton, Aug. 20, 1913, the son of the late Edward and Blanche (Trudeau) Bushey. Ernest graduated from St. Anne's Academy and on, Oct. 11, 1937, married the former Alice Bernardini, who survives him.
In his earlier years Ernest operated the Bushey Family Farm, located on the Bushey Road in Swanton Town, was a salesman for the former Benoit Motors, and loved driving school bus for Don G. Bell. He also managed the Socony Gas Station (now Bob's One Stop) on the corner of Grand Avenue and Canada Street. He will best be remembered for the founding of Swanton Rexall on Merchants Row in Swanton Village, which he owned and operated for many years.
Following his retirement, Ernest and his wife, Alice, wintered 35 years in Orange City, Fla. He was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton.
Ernest leaves his wife of 65 years, Alice Bushey, a resident of Holiday House in St. Albans Town; and his brother Harvey Bushey and his wife, Regina, of Alburg; along with many nieces and nephews including, Ruth Gagnon of DeBarry, Fla., Virginia and Richard Villeneuve of Essex, Harvey and Mary Bushey of Fairfield, Roger Bushey of Highgate, Joan and Charles Hatin of Alburg, Diane and Robert Detro of San Diego, Calif., Susan and Brian Tessier of Georgia, Donna and Donald LaRocque of Hinesville, Ga. and Larry Bushey of St. Albans.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Geraldine Gagnon and her husband Edmond, and three nephews, Ernest Gagnon, Raymond Gagnon and Allen Bushey all predeceased Ernest.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE pastor of Nativity and St. Louis Parishes will officiate. Interment will follow in the Bushey family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.
JOHN HUBBARD SUNDERLAND
SWANTON -- John Hubbard Sunderland, 76, a longtime resident of Platt Street in Swanton Village died Saturday morning, Nov. 9, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.
John was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., April 6, 1926, the son of the late Katherine H. and Harvey Haskell Sunderland. John graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans City in 1944.
John faithfully served his country during World War II in the United States Army Tank Destroyer Battalion stationed in the European Theater. Following World War II he also served in Korea.
John had a long and happy association with the gasoline engine. He built a motor scooter in high school shop class when he was just 15 years old. At one time he had a powerboat and raced on Lake Champlain. He later learned to fly and co-owned an airplane in Swanton, but his lifelong interest was in motorcycles, which he continued to own and ride until he was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2002.
For many years, John helped his father establish and operate a dairy farm in Swanton Town.
John is survived by his sister, Mary Jane and her husband James H. Dryden of Brunswick, Ga.; five nieces and nephews; nine grandnieces and nephews; and several cousins.
According to John's wishes, no visitation or memorial services will be held. Interment will take place next to his father and mother in the Highgate Center Cemetery Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. Gifts in John's memory may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
Arrangements have been under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton.
WALLACE E. HAMEL
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Wallace E. Hamel, 73, of Binghamton, N.Y., died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at this home in Binghamton. Bud was born in St. Albans, July 20, 1929, the second child of George and Ruth (Sullivan) Hamel.
He graduated from St. Anne's Academy in Swanton and attended St. Michael's College in Colchester. He worked at Colonial Airlines and Eastern Airlines before joining the Federal Aviation Administration. He retired as supervisor of the F.A.A. in Air Traffic control in Binghamton. In 1950, he married Joyce Cassavoy of Swanton.
The Rev. E. J. Hamel, S.S.E., uncle of the groom, was celebrant of the nuptial Mass. Bud is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Joyce Hamel, of Binghamton, one son and daughter-in-law, John and Joy Hamel of Binghamton; two daughters and one son-in-law, Ruth Hamel and Timothy Schreiner of New Milford, Conn., and Laura Hamel of Johnson City, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Matthew and Jason; one brother, James Hamel of Swanton.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bettie and Dr. John Warden of Alburg, and Sarasota, Fla., and Kathleen and Gene Morrissey of Burlington, and Naples, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was an avid golfer and fisherman and loved to play outdoors with his two grandsons. He was a devoted member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Binghamton.
A wake was held Nov. 6, at William Chase Funeral Home. Nov. 7, a funeral Mass was offered at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena.

MORTON P. LADD
ST. ALBANS BAY -- Morton P. Ladd, 83, a resident of this area for most of his life, passed away Saturday night, Nov. 9, 2002, at Holiday House Nursing Facility where he had resided for a short time. He was born in North Berkshire, May 20, 1919, the son of the late Philo N. and Grace D. (Domina) Ladd.
Mort was a clerk for the Central Vermont Railway for over 40 years. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed farming, gardening, lawn care and anything outdoors. He was a 1940 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans.
Survivors include his brother, The Reverend Merrill W. Ladd and his wife, Anna Mae, of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Ladd of St. Albans; nephews, Jeffrey Ladd and his wife, Tina of St. Albans, Joel Ladd of Virginia, Loren Ladd and his wife, Robbin of St. Albans Bay; and a niece, D. Raye Mudgett and her husband, Wendell of Sheldon; and eight grand-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Malcolm Ladd, in 1999.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Morton's life on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Church of the Nazarene. The Reverend Walter Mahany will officiate. Private interment services will be held in the Point Cemetery on Maquam Shore Road at the convenience of the family.

SHIRLEY M. CONGER
ESSEX JUNCTION -- Shirley M. Conger, 47, of Essex Junction, died Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2002, in the New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass.
Shirley was born Dec. 22, 1954, in Burlington, the daughter of Clifford and Marjorie Poquette. She graduated from South Burlington High School in the Class of 1972, and later went on to study Floral Design and Arrangement in Boston, Mass. On Sept. 24, 1977, she married Gary Conger in Grand Isle.
She worked for many years for the State of Vermont with the Department of Environmental Health. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and arranging flowers for both weddings and funerals. Her greatest enjoyment was being with her grandchildren, whom she loved very much.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Gary, of Essex Junction; their two daughters, Tracy Fitzgerald and her husband Chris of Highland Springs, Va. and Amber Conger of Essex Junction; her two grandchildren, Makayla and Shawn Fitzgerald; her father, Clifford Poquette and her stepmother, Mary of South Burlington; her mother and father-in-law, Jeannette and Ted Rounds of Jeffersonville; four sisters, Joyce Puding and her husband Hank of Redford, N.Y., Carol Collins and her husband Ronald of Grand Isle, Nancy Cook of Morrisville and Ginny Perrault of Essex Junction; her brother, Richard Poquette and his fiancee Elaine Jerry of Grand Isle; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Sheila Conger of Berkshire, Barbara Quenneville of Santa Rosa, Calif., Lucinda and Norman Stetson of Bradenton, Fla., Deborah Billado and her husband Al Perrella of Essex Junction; Donna Hall of Colonial Heights, Va., Sylvia and Bronk Quicksill of Cherry Hill, N.H. and Dale Conger. She also leaves several nieces, nephews, as well as grand-nieces, nephews, cousins and her many friends. She was predeceases by her mother, Marjorie Poquette on Sept. 7, 1990.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grand Isle, with the Reverend Father Jean Paul Laplante as celebrant. Burial will follow in Grand Isle Cemetery.
For those who wish, Memorial Contributions may be made to the family in care of Shirley's daughters, Tracy and Amber, to be used according to their wishes.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7, Milton.
