MARION GROVE METTEN

MIDDLEBURG, Pa. -- Marion Grove Metten of Middleburg, Pa., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Clearwater, Fla.

She was born on July 14, 1912, in Lewisburg, Pa., the daughter of the late James Allen and Elmedia Erdley Grove.

Marion attended the Lewisburg Public Schools, Bucknell University and graduated as a Dental Hygenist from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She worked for ten years as a Visitor and Interviewer for the Union County Office of Public Assistance and later served as a Dental Hygenist at the Selinsgrove Center and the Mid-West School District.

Marion was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority at Bucknell and helped to organize and later served as president of the Lewisburg Junior Women's Club. She also served as president and was still a member of the Middleburg Women's Club; a life member of the Snyder County Historical Society; and a member of the Bucknell Alumni Club, the Susquehanna Auxiliary, and Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Middleburg.

On Feb. 7, 1942, she was married in Lewisburg to Kurt C. Metten, who died in 1983. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Metten Moulton and her husband, Harry, of Swanton; a step-daughter, Beverly Metten Rarig and her husband, James, of Whitehall, Pa.; five grandsons; six great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Ruth Grove Anderson of Roanoke, Va. She was predeceased by her sisters, Elizabeth Miller, Laura Patterson, Kathryn Andersen, and Helen Grove.

Marion enjoyed working in her beautiful garden along the stream in her backyard. She loved her flowers and the outdoors. She also had the opportunity to travel and especially enjoyed spending many winters in Puerto Rico. Relatives and friends remember Marion as a very special lady who was always gentle, patient, and thoughtful. She loved life and adored being with her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Middleburg, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. A reception and luncheon will follow in the church social hall. Flowers will be provided by the family.

Contributions in Mrs. Metten's name may be made to the Middleburg Fire Company, Middleburg, Pa., 17842.

RAYMOND CHARLES SMITH, SR.

WINOOSKI -- Raymond Charles Smith, Sr., 60, husband of Jo Anne (Valley) Smith, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home in Winooski on Oct. 21, 2002.

He was born in Burlington, on Sept. 20, 1942, son of the late Donald and Catherine (Brown) Smith. He graduated from Burlington High School in June of 1960 and entered the United States Navy that summer. He served in Japan, Antarctica, and in Florida for seven-plus years. He received the Navy Unit Commendation, the Navy Good Conduct Medal with Star, and the National Defense Service Medal among other letters of recognition.

On April 24, 1965, he married Jo Anne Valley of Winooski. Following his tour of duty in the Navy he settled in Winooski. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard and worked for several companies in the field of avionics until his retirement.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Raymond Charles Smith, Jr. and his wife Kristina Hayes Smith of St. Albans, and Todd Kristaphor Smith and his wife Heather Perry Smith of Louisville, Kentucky; a granddaughter, Emily Rae and a grandson Kyle of St. Albans; two brothers, Robert Smith of Seattle, Wash., and James Smith and his wife Elise of Navarre, Fla.; a sister, Peggy-Anne and her husband and former shipmate Ronald "Ski" Marzewski of Essex; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Ray gave unconditional love and time to all he knew, especially his grandchildren, who were the love of his life. He enjoyed many happy hours in the woods of Craftsbury, at his cabin. He will be remembered as a great enthusiast of the outdoors.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Winooski. Interment will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent in Ray's name to the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, C/O The Business Office/Buck Lake 103 south Main St., Waterbury, Vt. 05676. Visiting hours will be Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, from 7-9 p.m. in the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St. Winooski.

PAUL EMILE BOULET

HIGHGATE -- Paul Emile Boulet, 78, a resident of this area since 1949, died Sunday morning, Oct. 20, 2002, in the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.

Paul was born in Marbleton, Quebec, Canada, March 29, 1924, the son of the late Francois and Eva (Roberts) Boulet. He attended schools in Canada and on May 30, 1949, married the former Theresa Jette, who survives him.

Working as a self employed carpenter for most of his life he ended his career as a 10-year associate of the Bertek Company retiring in 1990. In earlier years he held a private pilot license and will be remembered for his love of airplanes.

In addition to his wife, Theresa Boulet of Highgate, Paul leaves a son, Alain Boulet also of Highgate and a granddaughter, Alaina Boulet of Swanton. Also surviving are two sisters, Jacqueline Laurin of Phillipsburg P.Q. and Francoise Gauldault of Ste. Hubert, P.Q; four brothers, Gerard Boulet of Granby, P.Q., Germain Boulet of Phillipsburg, P.Q., Jeanot Boulet and his wife Theresa of Phillipsburg, P.Q. and Jean-Claude Boulet of Bedford, P.Q.; as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law including, Roger Jette and his wife Virginia of Dayton, Ohio, George Jette and his wife Lois of Burlington, Evelyn Boucher of Swanton, Marie C. Jette of Burlington, Yvonne Rocheleau of Flint, Michigan, Anna Thabault of Palm Bay, Fla., Aurore Jette of Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town, and Francoise Boulet of Ste. Luc, P.Q.; and many nieces and nephews.

A brother, Robert Boulet, predeceased him.

Theresa would like to offer special thanks to the Franklin County Home Health Agency-Hospice Program and the Haven Health Care Center for the wonderful care given to Paul.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. The pastor, Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Boulet family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Paul's memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency-Hospice Program, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

RUSSELL R. PARSONS

FLETCHER -- Russell Roy Parsons, age 50, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with malignant melanoma. He was supported throughout his illness by his loving family and many friends and neighbors who gathered round to help during his time of need. Russ and his family greatly appreciated the help and comfort lovingly administered in his last days by the volunteers and staff of Franklin County Home Health and Hospice.

He was born Dec. 19, 1951, in Auburn, N.Y., son of Carol (York) Parsons and the late Merle E. Parsons. He graduated from Red Creek Central School in Red Creek, N.Y. and attended SUNY Oswego. He left SUNY to pursue his career in printing and secured his first printing job at Cato Show Print in Cato, N.Y. Russ married the former Eileen "Sam" Cleland on Oct. 10, 1980, in East Fairfield. He was a dedicated employee of the Offset House in Essex for 13 years, rising to the position of Prepress Supervisor.

He loved fly fishing, especially on vacations with his wife's family in Ireland and Africa. Russ also loved camping and enjoyed the Adirondacks and his dear friends there. He will be well remembered for his extensive knowledge of every backwater and stream in Vermont. He realized his life's dream of building a house and shaping the landscape on his 20 acres of land in Fletcher, leaving that as his legacy for the family he so loved. He cared passionately about politics and insisted on fulfilling his last civic duty by absentee ballot. He was a loving and caring husband, father, son, great brother-in-law and the best of uncles. Russell will be dearly missed by the many family and friends who had the wonderful experience of knowing and loving him.

He is survived by his wife and partner of 24 years Eileen "Sam" (Cleland) Parsons of Fletcher; his daughter, Samantha F. Stobert, her husband Ian and their son Liam, all of Fletcher; his mother, Carol (York) Parsons of Syracuse, N.Y.; his brother, Dale I. Parsons and his wife Karen of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; many faithful friends and loving family members in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Northern Ireland.

Many faithful friends and neighbors contributed love, took care of chores, brought food and lent support on Russell's behalf, allowing us to be present throughout his dying process. The family also wishes to convey heartfelt thanks for the generosity and support of John McGrath and for the sensitivity and kind assistance of Dick Ronson, both of Offset House.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2002, from 7 - 9 p.m. There will be a coming together of friends, neighbors and loved ones next spring, at the family's convenience, on Russell's land, to honor his spirit and his life. Memorial contributions may be made in Russ' memory to their local hospice organization.

Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

THOMAS JOHN POWERS

WESTFORD -- Thomas John Powers, age 55, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, Oct. 20, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 27, 1947, in New Milford, Conn., son of the late Raymond and Isabel (Helpin) Powers.

He graduated from Wedutuck Central High School in Amenia, N.Y., class of 1966. He served his country well as an enlistee in the U.S. Army during his tour of the Vietnam War. Thomas married the former Leta Fielder in Crown Point, N.Y. on May 27, 1979. He was a dedicated and respected machinist at Lavallee & Ide in Winooski. Thomas was very family oriented and will be well remembered as an honorable, loving and caring husband, father and brother.

Tom so looked forward to his nature walks and hiking along the pristine waterways of Vermont, especially enjoying the waterfalls of Brewster River in Jeffersonville and Huntington Gorge, where he spent some of his most enjoyable and tranquil times with his loving wife Leta. He loved spending quality time fishing with his sons. His children "loved their dad" tremendously and always looked forward to the precious times spent together including their hikes up Camels Hump in Huntington.

Thomas will be greatly missed by his family and abundance of friends who greatly respected him and had the distinct honor of knowing and loving him.

He is survived by his wife Leta (Fielder) Powers of Westford; three sons, Daniel Gibbs and his wife Peggy of Waterbury, Thomas John "TJ" Powers, Jr. and his wife Tonie of Glens Falls, N.Y., and Jason Gibbs and Wendy Cardinal of Jeffersonville; three daughters, affectionately known as "Daddy's Little Girls, " Kimberly Ann Lewis and her husband Joe of Queensbury, N.Y., Heather Lee Powers and Eugene Sisk of Westford, and Katelyne Rae Powers of Westford; two brothers, Raymond Powers, Jr. and his wife Marion of Millbrook, N.Y., and Michael Powers of Florida; six grandchildren, Rebecca, Justin, Alick, Nathan, Christie, Jamison; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; two "special little friends, " Frankie and Caitie. He was also predeceased by a sister Ann Cady.

Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the United Church of Fairfax, with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Pleasant View Cemetery, Westford, where full military burial honors will be accorded the Vietnam Veteran.

Memorial contributions may be made in Thomas' name to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

REV. MSGR. RAYMOND A. ADAMS

ESSEX JUNCTION -- Right Rev. Msgr. Raymond A. Adams, 77, of Essex Junction, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

Msgr. Adams was born in Rochester, N.H. on Oct. 18, 1925, the son of the late John H. and Regina L. (LaRochelle) Adams.

He attended St. Peter's School and was a graduate of Christ the King School and graduated from Mount St. Joseph's Academy in Rutland in June of 1943. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Conn. for two years. He studied Philosophy at St. John's Seminary for two years, followed by four years of Theology at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Mass., where he received his Masters. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 11, 1951, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington by Bishop Edward F. Ryan for the Diocese of Burlington. His assignments were: April, 1951, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception- Assistant Principal, Cathedral High School, 1952- assigned as a Notary for Diocesan Tribunal, March 12, 1953, Principal of Cathedral High School, January, 1959, became the first Principal of Rice Memorial High School where he was affectionately known as "Sparky, " a name he truly enjoyed. He was instrumental in the building of Rice Memorial High School and served as Principal from 1959 to 1964. In August, 1964 he was assigned as Res. Pastor at St. Patrick's in Moretown and Our Lady of the Snows in Waitsfield and Mad River Valley Catholic Parish, 1968 Official's (Presiding Judge and Diocesan Tribunal and chaired the Diocesan School Board and the Diocesan Building Commission), 1969 named Msgr. Adams Honorary Prelate by Pope Paul VI, 1973 Pastor at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Winooski, 1981 Pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Albans, and 1991 Pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Richmond until his retirement in 1996.

Msgr. Adams belonged to several church and educational organizations. He was a member of the Vermont Headmasters Association, Degoesbriand Council Knights of Columbus, National Catholic Education Association, New England regional NCEA, and was one of the founders of the Catholic College Counseling and Placement Service.

Msgr. Adams is survived by his brother, Robert C. Adams of Williston, and LaJolla, Calif.; his brother, Donald M. Adams and his wife Jean of Rutland; his sister-in-law, Jacqueline Adams of Essex Jct.; his sister-in-law, Virginia Adams of Rutland; and by 18 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Francis J. Adams and John E. Adams; his sister, Rosemary Hebert, brother-in-law, Fernand Hebert; and his sister-in-law, Lovina Adams.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 115 Barlow St., Winooski. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.

Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 4-7 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski and at St. Stephen's on Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Priest Benefit Fund, Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington, 351 North Avenue, Burlington, Vt. 05401, or for Masses, c/o David Adams, P. O. Box 285, Jericho, Vt. 05465.

OPAL G. SWEET

BERKSHIRE -- Opal G. Sweet, age 87, widow of Douglas Sweet, died Saturday evening, Oct. 19, 2002, at Haven Health Center in St. Albans, following a brief illness. She was born in Abercorn, Quebec, May 18, 1915, the daughter of the late Leonard and Blanche (Cowan) Sherrer.

Mrs. Sweet had been a resident of Berkshire most of her life where she owned and operated a dairy farm with her husband, and then later with her son Ken. She was especially fond of sewing and quilting and taking care of her home.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Ken and Janette Sweet of Berkshire, and Gordon and Iren Jones of East Farnham, Quebec; three grandchildren, Sarah, Jennifer and Arron; and several nieces and nephews; two brothers, Keith and Shirley Sherrer of Jeffersonville, and Douglas and Joyce Sherrer of Kitchincer, Ontario; four sisters, Audrey and Steve Kitt of Dunham, Quebec, Shirley Gardner of Stanbridge East, Quebec, Bernice and Ernest Tittimore of Stanbridge East, Quebec, Helen Diamond of Dunham, Quebec; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sherrer of Sutton, Quebec, Glenna Sherrer of Richford, Connie Sherrer of Weteskwin, Albt. and Patricia Sherrer of Cowansville, Quebec; a brother-in-law, George and Frances Sweet of Eden. She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Sweet, in 1960; four brothers, Hugh, Lloyd, George and Alden Sherrer; and one sister, Ethel Haggerty.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Avenue in Enosburg Falls with Pastor Pat Hoadley officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Richford. Friends may call at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg this evening from 7-9 p.m.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 150 Kennedy Dr., South Burlington, Vt. 05453.
