RITA ODILE GRANGER
SWANTON/PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Rita Odile Granger, a former resident of Swanton, and most recently of Pensacola, Fla., passed away
June 22, 2002, in Pensacola where she has been living with her brother Leo Granger since 1985. Prior to living in Florida, Rita lived in Swanton with her sister V. Anne Zweeres.
Rita was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Claremont, N.H. In 1944 she moved to Old Orchard Beach, Maine until 1973 when she moved to Swanton. While living in Swanton she attended the Church of the Nativity and the Marshall Center in St. Albans. While living in Florida she was a member of the Handicappers Bowling League and attended The Polak Rehab Center.
Rita is survived by her brothers and sisters, V. Anne Zweeres of Swanton, Leo Granger of Pensacola, Fla., George Granger, Jeanne Dwyer and Theresa Pendleton of Maine. Also 22 nieces and nephews survive her.
A Memorial service will be held in Maine so she can be laid to rest with her parents George Granger and Alma (Lemire) Granger and a brother Roland Granger.
MARY ELLEN (SHAW) REYNOLDS
CAMBRIDGE -- Mary Ellen (Shaw) Reynolds, 80, a longtime resident of Cambridge, passed away at her home with her loving family by her side on Thursday evening, July 4, 2002. She was born in Derby on June 24, 1922, a daughter of the late George and Susie (Streeter) Shaw.
Mary was an avid reader, always looking forward to the quiet times spent at the family's camp built by her husband, overlooking Metcalf Pond's tranquil shores. She loved to fish, teach and play cribbage with her family and never missed her daily crossword puzzles. She was a great handyman and always available to share her home carpentry skills with her family. Mary was the self-appointed protector of the delicate and elegant Lady-slipper flower, which naturally adorned her camp lawn. She was a traditional Vermonter, independent and private in her life, but her heart was always unconditionally extended to her family and grandchildren she so loved. She was a wonderful and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all of those who had the distinct pleasure to know and love her.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Crepeau, and her husband, Joseph "Dan" of Cambridge; her grandchildren, Donald Crepeau and his daughter Shannon, Matthew Crepeau and his wife, Susan; many nieces and nephews; and her most faithful companion "Penny." She was predeceased by her loving husband, Donald L. Reynolds, in 1970; a brother, Fred Shaw; and three sisters, Jane McNall Ibey, Ellah Richards, and Marion Jennison.
Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Sunday, July 7, 2002, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 8, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Binghamville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Elizabeth Griffin officiating.

ALICE H. BOARDMAN
ST. ALBANS/BURLINGTON -- Mrs. Alice Hardy Boardman, age 74, went to join her husband, Robert, on Thursday, July 4, 2002, from her home in Burlington, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Troy on Jan. 29, 1928, a daughter of the late Ralph and Avis (Green) Hardy. Alice was a secretary for Richard Hersey Plumbing, later in the office of Fonda Container Corp., and also at Sears Store. She was a resident of St. Albans for many years and moved to Burlington in 1987. Alice was very devoted to the veterans organizations, probably being the most knowledgeable member about protocol and Robert's Rules of Order. With the American Legion, Alice was an Auxiliary Department President and held all the offices, some more than once, for the Green Mountain Auxiliary Unit 1, of St. Albans. With the 8 & 40 Club, she was the Chapeau Departmental 1984 and 1985, and held all the local offices. With the Robert E. Glidden Auxiliary Unit 758, V.F.W., she was a past auxiliary president, former treasurer for several terms and an officer in many capacities.
Alice was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed cooking, especially treats for the holidays, for her family and friends.
Alice is survived by her sons John Boardman and Peter Boardman of Colchester; granddaughters Tonya and Sara; sister Eva Ann Tabor of Burlington; brothers Maurice Hardy of Delphis, Kan., Charles Hardy of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Robert Hardy of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, parents and a brother, John Hardy.
Special thanks to her sister, Ann, and brother, Bob, who have extended so much of their time and compassion in caring for Alice during her illness. At her request, there will be no public services. Interment will be in the Boardman family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

MELVIN J. BELL
RICHFORD -- Melvin J. Bell, 59, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
He was born Sept. 26, 1942, in Richford, the son of the late Clarence and Daisy (Nutting) Bell.
He was a lifelong resident of Richford and was employed as a logger until retiring due to poor health. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the American Legion Post #12 of Richford and a life member of the V.F.W. Robert Glidden Post in St. Albans. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Johnson) Bell of Richford; an aunt, Cecile Nutting of Enosburg Falls; several cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Derrick Johnson, of Berkshire.
Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford. Interment will follow in the Richford Center Cemetery.

DANIEL FRANCIS BRESNAHAN
GLENWOOD, Fla. -- Daniel Francis Bresnahan, 76, died at his home in Manor Way, Glenwood, Fla., on Tuesday, July 2, 2002.
Daniel was born in Somerville, Mass., on Nov. 4, 1925, the son of John A. Bresnahan and Sylvie Kujeski. He later moved to Glenwood, Fla., from Richford, Vt., in 1979.
He was educated in the St. James Parochial Schools in Haverhill, Mass., and received his high school diploma through the Veteran's Administration for those who had gone to fight for their country during World War II. A fierce patriot, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years old, serving as an aviation machinists mate, stationed in Norfolk, Va., where he was injured during a tragic munitions explosion. After recovering in Asheville, N.C., Daniel went on to the Pacific, where he served until his discharge in 1946. Post-war employment was with the Boston and Maine Railroad as a conductor until 1958. He reentered government service in 1959, joining the U.S. Border Patrol branch of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, attending the Border Patrol Academy located in Brownsville, Texas. Relocating to Richford, he retired in 1979 as agent in charge, supervisor for the U.S. Border Patrol.
Always civic-minded, he was involved with many affiliations in the community and gave freely of his time and talents. Daniel was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, the VFW Post 2380 in DeLand.
Daniel moved to the Glenwood, Fla., area in 1979, where he and his wife owned The Sub Base Mobile Kitchen lunch trucks, from where he joyously fed the multitudes working in Central Florida. He also was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Retired Border Patrol Officers and president of the Friends of DeLeon Springs. Daniel and his wife, Doris, volunteered much time and effort for the preservation of and education about DeLeon Springs State Park. He loved the Hispanic Culture and derived much pleasure from the music, food and people, whom he held in utmost respect all his life. He leaves behind not only family and friends, but lessor creatures of God, James and Kit, and many animals that were touched by his gentle and kind hand.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Doris Bresnahan, whom he was married to for 52 years; his daughters Sharon Tworoger Larose, of DeLand, Fla., and Cheryl Thorp, of Marietta, S.C..; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in Daytona Beach, Fla.
DOROTHY S. HURLBURT
BURLINGTON -- Dorothy S. Hurlburt, 92, died Monday afternoon, July 1, 2002, at Star Farm Nursing Home in Burlington, surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothy was born in Colchester on Jan. 30, 1910, the daughter of Salmon and Mary (Hoose) Francis.
On Jan. 11, 1932, she married Alfred Hurlburt in Ticonderoga, N.Y. Alfred predeceased her on March 2, 1979. Dorothy is survived by her children Robert Hurlburt Sr. and his wife, Donna, of Milton; Carol Verchereau and her husband, Philip, of Grand Isle; Beulah Charbonneau of Burlington, and Mata Dufault of Bridport; and by many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister Harriett Downs of Hinesburg; brothers Clifford Francis of North Ferrisburg, Leonard Francis of New York, Clayton Francis and his wife, Sharron, of New Hampshire, and Donald Francis and his wife, Helen, of Hinesburg; and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Alfred, she was predeceased by a son, Leon Hurlburt, and her brothers Henry, Howard and Robert Francis.
Dorothy's family would like to thank Star Farm Nursing Home and its staff for the excellent care given to Dorothy during her stay at Star Farm.
A funeral service will be held Friday, July 5, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, with burial following in the Grand Isle Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, July 4, from 4-7 p.m. with a wake service to be held at 6:45 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home.
CATHERINE LYDIA PELKEY
SWANTON -- Catherine Lydia Pelkey, 72, passed away late Monday, July 1, 2002, at her residence in Swanton.
Catherine was born in Alburg on March 15, 1930, the daughter of the late Franklin and Annie Marie (Shederick) Bohannon. She attended Alburg Elementary and Swanton High School and on June 12, 1948, married Oscar Joseph Pelkey, who predeceased her on November 5, 1979.
She is survived by one daughter, Chris Bard, and her husband, Doug, of Highgate; two sons Alan Pelkey and his wife, Linda, of Highgate and Richard Neville of Arizona.
She leaves a brother, Floyd Bohannon, and his wife, Joyce, of Highgate; three sisters, Marie Flood of Brandon, Claireta Sartwell and her husband, Jason, Barbara Duprey and her husband, David, of Highgate; four grandchildren, Heather, Bradley and Shanna Bard and Jessica Pelkey; also three great-grandchildren Raymond, Dylan and Cheyenne; as well as several nieces and nephews. Catherine was the mother of many foster children and was a very loving, caring and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and foster mother. She also leaves a very special friend, Dorothy Maskell of Swanton. Catherine will always be in our hearts and deeply missed forever. We love you.
In addition to her husband, Oscar, she was predeceased by a sister, Eliza Hughes, and a brother, Kenneth (Red) Bohannon.
A Service of Death and Resurrection celebrating Catherine's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 5, 2002, at Kidder Memorial Home. The Rev. Marcheta Townsend will officiate. Interment will follow in the Pelkey family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Friday, July 5, 2002, from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service.
