MARION V. GARROW
EAST FAIRFIELD -- Marion V. Garrow, age 76, died Sunday evening, July 14, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, with her family by her side.
She was born March 11, 1926, in East Fairfield, the daughter of the late Anthony and Bertha (Hutchins) Morris.
She was a life long resident of East Fairfield, and was known to most as Mother. She had a great love for her dogs and cows.
She is survived by her four children, Connie Rogers and her husband Dan of Bakersfield, Garry Garrow of East Fairfield, Larry Garrow and his wife Kathy of Richford and Mary Lou Baker and her husband Jack of St. Albans; 12 grandchildren, Melissa, Jessie, Vicky, Betsy, Sarah, Rebecca, Adam, Boomer, Tiffany, Daryl, Stacey and Kelly; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred E. Garrow; a son, William Garrow; a granddaughter, Julie Garrow; a sister, Frances Draper; and two brothers, Anthony and Kenneth Morris.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening from 7-9 at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.
WILLIAM H. "BILL" BURT SR.
WATERVILLE -- William Howard "Bill" Burt, Sr., age 96, passed away at his home on July 14, 2002.
Bill was born on Ober Hill in Eden, on Feb. 1, 1906, son of the late William and Carrie (Amidon) Burt. The first of five children, he was educated through grade eight and left school to work the family farm.
In 1918, the family moved from North Hyde Park to Waterville. At age 37 he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a surveyor in the 654th Engineers, Topographical Battalion and 103rd Engineers of the 28th Division. While overseas working on maps and models for the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France, he met Mary Neal of Stroud, England. In 1946 he returned home and was joined by Mary shortly after. They were married Feb. 15, 1947, and raised five children.
Bill farmed, logged, sawed and hammered saws in Lamoille County and the surrounding areas. He served the Town of Waterville as selectman, auditor, lister, and grand juror among other duties. He was a member of the American Legion Post 35. He hunted, fished and trapped throughout northern Vermont and was more familiar with the surrounding countryside than most folks are with their own back yards. His endless supply of fascinating hunting and fishing stories never ceased to capture the attention of family and friends. Bill loved auctions, antiques, reading, and card parties and was an avid Red Sox fan. He spent a lifetime collecting friends and memories.
Bill is survived by his wife Mary (Neal) Burt of Waterville; three sons, William "Billy" Burt Jr. and his wife Donna of Waterville; Mike Burt and Ellen Tillotson of Waterville; Charlie Burt and his wife Sherrie of Quincy, Mass.; two daughters, Jeni Lynch and Joe Letourneau of Sheldon, Joy Doane and her husband Tennyson of Bakersfield' his "adopted son" Don Lynch and Doreen Blake of Waterville; one brother, Douglas Burt and his wife Evelyn of Waterville; two sisters, Opal Lafountain of Waterville and Natalie Cutting of Waterville; 12 grandchildren, Carrie Pontbriand and her husband James of Barre, William Burt III and Jacinta Fitzgerald of Waterville, Michelle Knight and her husband David of Waterford, Mike Burt II and Jamie Levesque of Cambridge, Amy Naylor and her husband Andy of Waterville, Garren Burt of Quincy, Mass., Nicholas Burt of Quincy, Mass., Donnie Lynch Jr. of Waterville, Randi Lei Lynch of Waterville, Tennyson Doane III of Bakersfield, Cameron William Doane of Bakersfield, Caelyn Mariah Doane of Bakersfield; seven great-grandchildren, Maria Anne Burt of Waterville, Jordyn Rae Knight of Waterford, Gavin Burt of Cambridge, Dylan Tuthill of Waterville, Brooke Naylor of Waterville, twins Nicholas & Nathan Lynch of Waterville; many nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nephews and nieces; a special cousin Ruby Day of Connecticut; a brother-in-law, John Neal and his wife Mary and family of Great Britain; a special friend Mary Aldum of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was also predeceased by his sister Muriel Stebbins and his grandson Anderson Doane.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home from 5 - 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Waterville Church Of The Nazarene at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2002, with the Reverend Harold Brimmer officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery in Waterville where full military honors will be accorded the World War II veteran.

SHIRLEY M. GARDNER
ST. ALBANS -- Miss Shirley M. Gardner, age 65, died Thursday afternoon, July 11, 2002, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, after a lengthy illness. She was born daughter of the late Louis and Dorothy (Fredrick) Gardner, Nov. 17, 1936.
She worked in production for the Simmons company in Middlebury, and manufactured telephone cable for the Brand-Rex Company in Connecticut, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 1, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 758, and a former member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 321. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Parish.
Her survivors include her brothers, William Gardner of St. Albans, Albert Gardner and his wife, Arlene, of Chicopee, Mass.; sisters, Margaret Lord of Taftville, Conn. and May Mosher and her husband, Walter, of Middlebury; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her special canine companion Tinkerbelle; and her four brothers, Earl, Jack, Lawrence and Charles Gardner.
A funeral service will be celebrated Monday, July 15, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Friends may call at the Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Interment will follow in the Gardner family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

REVEREND HOWARD L. STIMMEL
BRATTLEBORO -- The Reverend Howard Lincoln Stimmel, 95, of Abbott Road, formerly of Greenfield, Mass., died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in Vernon Green Nursing Home, Vernon.
He was born in Casselton, N.D., Dec. 1, 1906, the son of Smith and Annie (Sibley) Stimmel.
His wife, the former Reba Langworthy, died March 12, 1999. They were married Sept. 17, 1985.
He graduated from Central High School in Fargo, N.D. in 1924, and later from Jamestown College in North Dakota with a major in music pipe organ. In 1980, he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree and a year later received his masters degree.
Stimmel also attended summer schools at Princeton and Harvard. He pastored at the E. Middlebury Methodist Church, Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and White River Junction and the Quechee Congregational Church. While in White River Junction he organized a new Methodist church in North Hartland. Other churches that he pastored in were Plattsburgh, N.Y., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Albany, N.Y., Poultney and St. Albans. He retired from St. Albans in 1974, and moved to Greenfield where he made his home until settling in Brattleboro.
He taught at Green Mountain Junior College and was a trustee of the college. He was also a trustee of the Troy Annual Conference.
Stimmel enjoyed music, traveling and photography. He enjoyed playing the organ and often filled in at many functions around the area. People would most remember Stimmel for his presentation of Abraham Lincoln, "Through My Father's Eyes, " where he shared how his father served as a guard for Abraham Lincoln.
Survivors include a son, Philip L. and his wife Cherolyn M.; a grandson, Jonathan Smith Stimmel; and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Carol Jane, died in May 1964.
Calling hours will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Walker Funeral Home, 14 High St., Greenfield, Mass. A funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. The Reverend Jane Lawrence, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Greenfield, will officiate.
Burial will take place at a later date in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron, N.Y.

JOYCE L. LONGWAY
ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Joyce Lorraine Longway, age 68, died Monday afternoon, July 8, 2002, at her home, following an extended illness. She was born in Alburg on April 27, 1934, daughter of the late Edward and Ella (Hilliker) Hemingway.
Joyce, following high school, was employed at Woolworth's Stores as a saleslady in the shoe department for many years. Following the closure of Woolworth's she was employed at Kinney Drug. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit 758 and a former member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, all in St. Albans. She married Ernest Longway on Nov. 9, 1974.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her son Steven and his wife Laurel Pelkey of Massachusetts; her daughter Sherry and her husband Chris Roper of Virginia; her son-in-law Michael and his wife Jackie Blouin of St. Albans; six grandchildren, step-children and their spouses, Richard and Julie Longway of Swanton, Valorie and David French of Fairfax, Christine and Leo Demers of Milton, Edward and Dawn Longway of Swanton, George and Terri Longway of St. Albans Town; 12 step-grandchildren; four brothers and their wives, Harold and Cecile Hemingway of Connecticut, Gordon and Nancy Hemingway of Florida, Wallace and Nancy Hemingway of Virgina, Arnold and Nancy Hemingway of Essex Jct.; several nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her daughter Sheila M. Blouin Oct. 28, 1989; her step-son Ernest Longway April 23, 1968; her sister Violet L'Esperance and brother Robert Hemingway.
Joyce's family would like to express sincere gratitude to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, for all the kindness and caring they extended to her and her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Interment will follow in the Longway family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery.

BETTY L. PARROTTE
ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Betty L. Parrotte, age 67, died Monday, July 8, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 18, 1935, daughter of the late Albie and Elizabeth (Camerone) Westover. She married Lewis Parrotte Aug. 12, 1950. She spent her life as a home maker caring for her family.
Besides her husband, Lewis, she is survived by her seven children, Linda Elwood and her husband Raymond of Enosburg, Lewis Jr. Parrotte and his wife Cheryl of Ellenburg, N.Y., Shirley Stine and her husband Bruce of Fairfield, Roy Parrotte and his wife Pauline of St. Albans, Elizabeth Parrotte, Lynn Parrotte both of Fairfield, and Judy Brior of Burke, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Rosanna Guyette of St. Albans; two brothers, Mr. Albie Westover Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Alburg; and Mr. Donald Westover and his wife Dorothy of St. Albans; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; and three sisters, Catherine Reagan, Janet Duprey and Shirley Westover.

LILLIAN ANNETTE STENTA
SWANTON -- Lillian A. Stenta, 65, died early Sunday morning, July 7, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Lisa Stenta on Jonergin Drive in Swanton.
Lillian was born in Newport, N.H. on June 17, 1937, she was the daughter of Pierre and Beatrice (Laroche) Gagne. Lillian spent her early years in Springfield, Mass., where she attended school, married and raised her children. Lillian moved to Vermont in 1977, and was presently a member of the Church of the Nativity, Ladies of St. Anne, St. Louis Parish in Highgate.
She was a LNA Caregiver in several Nursing Facilities including, VerDelle Village and Holiday House in St. Albans, Birchwood in Burlington. She was very involved in Northwestern Counseling & Support Services and Vermont Special Olympics. Lillian was a very loving, caring and generous woman, who cared more about others than for herself. She provided private care for many local families, including her own family members.
Lillian was predeceased by her father, Pierre, mother-in-law Selma R. Stenta, Sister-in-law Rita Gagne, two infant brothers and one infant sister.
Lillian is survived by her mother, Beatrice Gagne; two sons, Mark and his wife, Cindy Stenta, and Michael Stenta of Swanton; two daughters, Lisa Stenta of Swanton, Laurie and her husband, Ron Lee, of Virginia, Springfield, Mass.; two brothers, Jean and his wife, Pauline Gagne, of Chicopee, Mass., Cyrille and his wife, Karen, of Highgate Center; three sisters, Lina and her husband, George Roberge, of Montague, Mass., Rolande Renaud and her friend Bill Alouise of Springfield, Mass., Dianne and her husband, Gerald Laroche, of Highgate Center. Her former husband Mark Stenta of Springfield, Mass.; 15 grandchildren, Melissa Plouffe, Timothy Westover, Jessica Westover, Emily Stenta, Mark, Jr, Melina, Brandon, Amber, Hanna, Cassandra Stenta, Pete Bessette, Issac, Stevie, Veronica Lee and Nicole Porter; as well as three God children Karen Gagne, Jacqueline Depatie and Ronnie Gagne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2002, at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton. Father Leonidas B. Laroche, pastor of St. Mary's Parish in St. Albans and a cousin of the family will be celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in St. Louis Cemetery in Highgate Center.
Family and friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave, Swanton from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2002.
