RAYMOND H. UNDERWOOD
ST. ALBANS - Mr. Raymond H. "Mickey" Underwood, an avid gambler, cashed in his chips. Mickey departed from this world Thursday afternoon, June 27, 2002, from the Haven Health Care Center, following a courageous fight with cancer.
An 82-year resident of St. Albans, he will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, and compassion (especially regarding the Widow of the Unknown Soldier Fund).
He was born in Swanton Oct. 19, 1919, one of 13 children of the late Edward and Winifred (LaGrange) Underwood, Sr. While in his junior year at Bellows Free Academy, he enlisted in the military.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Northern Solomons, New Guinea, Guadalcanal and Luzon.
Following the war he was employed at Union Carbide Consumer Products for 35 years. In his retirement years he worked at Martin's Food Store checkout and chauffeured many to doctor's appointments and helped them do their errands and shopping. At the celebration on June 16 -- at the graduation ceremonies of Bellows Free Academy, -- Raymond H. Underwood received his high school diploma.
Mickey was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 1, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 758. He was the commander of Post 1 in 1973 and served as the Service Officer, especially during the Christmas seasons, obtaining gifts and food for the needy. He also played Santa at many festivities for the young and old alike.
Raymond married Sybil R. Dow, R.N. on July 5, 1947. Sybil died April 24, 1995.
As a devoted father, his family was the most important part of his life. He is survived by his very close companion Yvette Champagne of Swanton; his four children, Michael and his wife Patricia Underwood of St. Albans Bay, Melody and her husband Philip Prior of Hampton, Va., Bruce and his wife Roberta Underwood of Hanover, N.H., Bonnie Messier and her companion Michael Phillips of St. Albans; two sisters Florence Gadouas of Swanton and Edith Miner of St. Albans; 12 grandchildren; and as a final blessing to help ease our pain, the life cycle continues with the birth of his sixteenth great-grandchild, Evan Mark Charbonneau on June 18, 2002. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Worship Service of Comfort will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Simmons will officiate. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in the Underwood family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked, in lieu of flowers, to make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602. Arrangements are by the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
LORRAINE D. TAYLOR
LEDYARD, Conn. -- Lorraine D. Taylor, age 77, formerly of 7 Muster Lane, Ledyard, Conn., died Wednesday at Mystic Manor. She was born in St. Albans on July 20, 1924, the daughter of Fred and Fannie King Douglass. She married Robert A. Taylor in Fairfax, on April 20, 1946, who died Aug. 4, 1993.
She graduated from Johnson State College in 1945 and taught school in Vermont for many years.
She enjoyed reading, antiquing and cooking.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane Nelson of Waterford, Conn. and Sara T. Guido of Quaker Hill, Conn.; two sons, Robert Taylor, Jr. of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. and John Taylor of Groton, Conn.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service and interment in Avery Stoddard Cemetery, Ledyard will be private. There are no visiting hours.

ALBERTA MARIE GAGNE
HIGHGATE CENTER -- Mrs. Alberta Marie Gagne, 85, a longtime resident of Highgate Center died Tuesday afternoon, June 25, 2002, in the Holiday House Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in St. Albans Town.
She was born in Roxton Falls, Quebec, Canada, June 18, 1917, the daughter of the late Henri and Amelina (Brouillard) Gagne. She attended schools in Canada and Highgate and on Sept. 3, 1938, married Romeo A. Gagne, Sr. who predeceased her, Feb. 10, 1969.
In addition to her responsibilities as a homemaker and mother, Alberta worked several years as a seamstress for the former York Manufacturing Company.
She was a faithful and devoted member of St. Louis Roman Catholic Parish, attended daily Mass, served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne. She also was a member of the Hi-Swans Senior Citizens and the former Highgaters Home Dem Group.
Alberta will always be remembered as a very family oriented person and loved children and family gatherings. She was known as an expert seamstress and made quilts for all of her children and grandchildren. She also made wedding gowns, loved maple sugaring and especially enjoyed celebrating her birthdays at St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte.
She leaves her eight children and their spouses, Adrienne and Peter Perrino of Highgate Springs, Jienette and Marcel Gagne of East Highgate, Romeo and Agnes Gagne of Swanton, Georgette and David Roddy of Highgate Center, Allen and Linda Gagne of Swanton, Daniel and Cindy Gagne of Swanton, Marie and Michael Maskell of Highgate Springs and Michael and Sylvia Gagne of Highgate Center; one sister, Mrs. Lucienne L'Ecuyer of Natick, Mass.; three sisters-in-law, Beatrice Gagne of Swanton, Albina Gagne of Indian Orchard, Mass. and Marie Anna Gagne of Drummondville, Quebec, Canada; 31 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents Alberta was also predeceased by a grandson, Stephen Gagne in 1998 and a great granddaughter, Ashley Peters in 2000. She also was predeceased by 11 brothers and sisters, Eliodor Gagne, Leo Gagne, Alice Laroche, Yvonne Bilodeau, Pierre Gagne, Simeon Gagne, Elphege Gagne, Elzear Gagne, Marie Jeanne Gagne, Andrenna Young and Henri Gagne.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, director of St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Gagne family lot in St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Monday, July 1, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

LOUIS EDWARD 'SONNY' MARTELL, SR.
ALBURG -- Louis 'Sonny' Martell, 72, a lifelong Alburg resident died Monday afternoon, June 24, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.
Sonny was born in Alburg, Oct. 10, 1929, the son of the late Fred and Marguerite (Prairie) Martell. He attended schools in Alburg and on Feb. 12, 1949, married the former Anna Soule who survives him.
Sonny worked as a dairy farmer all his life, owning and operating his own dairy farm on the Martell Road in the town of Alburg. He also had other supporting jobs and was employed cutting ice for the Rutland Railroad as well as operated his own milk pickup route for Milton Coop. in Alburg.
Sonny was active throughout the Alburg community serving 35 years on the Board of Civil Authority and was a Justice of the Peace. He also served on the board of the United States Department of Agriculture ASC and was a member of the Grand Isle County Democratic Party. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Amadeus Parish.
He will be lovingly remembered as a faithful and devoted family man who enjoyed his camp and fishing.
In addition to his wife, Anna of Alburg, Sonny leaves two daughters, Lois Laskowski and her husband Thaddeus of St. Albans Bay and Mary Ann Martell and her special friend David Bohannon of Alburg; three sons, Bruce Martell of Hinesburg, Louis Martell, Jr. of Alburg and Steven Martell and his special friend Brenda Hall of Alburg; two sisters, Lucille Chamberlain of Rouses Point, N.Y. and Janet Hart and her husband Delbert of Plattsburgh, N.Y.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A grandson, Jonathan Martell predeceased him on April 4, 1993.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Alburg Village. The pastor, Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Martell family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Friday, June 28, 2002, from 6 to 9 p.m.

ALAN E. GIFFIN
MILTON -- Alan E. Giffin, 71, died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville.
Alan was born on May 7, 1931, in Burlington, the son of Everest and Irene (Thompson) Giffin.
He is survived by his brother Clifford Giffin and his wife Shirley of Rutland and by his sister Eleanor Bushey and her husband Randall of Milton; and by many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his caretakers Kevin and Cindy Cook and David Lafata, his longtime friend Howard Halnon of Milton and his friend and advocated Edward Wells of Burlington. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Glen and Roger Giffin.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 29, at 10 a.m. in the Milton Village Cemetery with Reverend Jeffrey Cornwell officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Special Olympics, 8 Avenue D, Williston, Vt. 05495.
Visiting hours will be held Friday from 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.
LOUISA GAUDETTE NOEL
ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Louisa Gaudette Noel, age 90, died Wednesday morning, June 26, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care following a brief illness. She was born in St. Albans, April 12, 1911, daughter of the late George and Rose (Gokey) Hemingway. She was employed at the St. Albans Hospital as a kitchen cook and later for the sewing department. She was first married to Norris Gaudette and after his death married Victor Noel, who also predeceased her. Loisa leaves 305 direct descendants.
Her survivors include her children and their spouses Lucille and Larry Scually of Whitehall, N.Y., Norris and Lena Gaudette of Milton, Georgianna Demar of St. Albans, Gene and Sue Holbrook of Gaisvoort, N.Y.; 42 grandchildren; 24 step-grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; 111 great-great grandchildren; two great-great-great grandchildren; her step-children and their spouses Rita and Robert Lamarche, Roger and Bonnie Noel, Diane and Arthur Davis, Ronald and Nelson Noel, all of Highgate, Theresa Newton, David and Barbara Noel all of Swanton; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, both of her husbands, daughters Esther Richard and Gertrude Demar Goodroe, sons-in-law Gordon Richard, Sr., Henry Demar, Sr., Isreal Goodroe and great-granddaughter Honey Lee Perretta.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in the Gaudette/Noel family lot in St. Luke's Cemetery.

EDWARD L. BUSHEY
HIGHGATE/BURLINGTON -- Mr. Edward L. Bushey, age 85, died Monday morning, June 24, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care, following a brief illness. He was born in Highgate May 2, 1917, son of the late Vinnie and Lottie (Rockwell) Bushey. He married Gwendolyn Baker Oct. 15, 1938.
Edward was employed at the Missisquoi Pulp and Paper Mill for 13 years. From 1942, until he went into the U.S. Army, he was a sheet metal apprentice at the Central Vermont Railway.
Following his discharge at the end of World War II, he returned to the railroad until his retirement in 1977. Ed was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and served as an usher for several years. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 1, and the Elks Lodge, B.P.O.E. 1566. He was an avid golfer and loved fishing and hunting. He was a former member of the Champlain Country Club, the Loyal Order of Moose and the Knights of Columbus.
Besides his wife of over 63 years, Gwendolyn, he is survived by their son Allan and his wife Lynda Bushey of Enosburg; three grandchildren, Wayne Bushey, Amy Bushey and her companion Raymond Bosley of Fairfax and Sheila and her husband Henry Bean of Georgia; five great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Nicole Bushey, Ryan and Andrew King and Adam Bean; brothers and their wives. Carlton and Jan Bushey of St. Albans, Richard and Nancy Bushey of Alaska, Norman and Ann Bushey of St. Albans, Ronald and Evelyn Bushey of North Carolina; sisters Marilyn Ashton of Rhode Island, Betty Gignac of Connecticut, Janice and her husband William Sumner of Connecticut; brother-in-law Reginald and his wife Rose Baker of St. Albans; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Donald Bushey.
