Randolph, VT - WINIFRED “WINNIE” A. LOWELL
OUR SWEET SOUL, WINIFRED (Winnie) Alma Olmsted Lowell applied for a job in heaven and got accepted on Friday, July 31st, 2015. That's quite a feat at almost 99 years old!
Winnie was born at home on September 13, 1916 in Lilliesville, VT, where she was raised, and attended its one-room school. She enjoyed a rural childhood and learned Vermont skills through necessity and customs at the farm home of her parents, Fred J. and Alma Lavinia Wilson Olmsted, and with siblings, Eleanor (Colby), Harley, Olin, and Frederick Olmsted, all of whom have pre-deceased her.
Work began early in life, including employment at Dr. Fletcher's home in Gaysville, VT. Other work included honing her skills and providing for her family at VanRaalte and Merrimaids Sewing companies in Randolph, VT, where she graduated to supervisor, with her piecework speed and kind teaching abilities. She was a fantastic cook, and lovingly baked the best ever homemade bread, donuts, pies and other goodies and was a master crafter of the cutest baby sweaters ever knit, as well as gifted at crocheting, sewing and crafts. In her later years, she loved traveling to visit family and friends in Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and New York, with the longest trip being to Switzerland to see her grandson, Sim & wife Maria, in June, 2002 almost at age 86. Her earliest years were lived in Lilliesville, Lympus, Hancock and Bartonsville, VT. but lived in Randolph, VT, from 1952 until Nov. 29, 2010 when she became a much loved and well cared for resident of Riverbend Residential Home in Chelsea, VT.
She was first married
to Bernard F. Whittier, with that marriage dissolving in 1952. On June 29, 1960 she was married
to her beloved George E. Lowell, until his death on July 3, 1986. For years she was a member of West Randolph Grange and the Veterans Ladies' Auxiliary.
On Feb 15, 2003, at age 87, Winnie suffered a major brain hemorrhage, from which she made a valiant and courageous recovery over 6 months of diligent rehab. She has since had over 12 years of quality life, taking trips, and seeing her three great-grand-children born, Miette Marie Schloneger, Kai Jaczek Huang-Sarnacki and Gavin James Huang-Sarnacki, who survive her. Also surviving are her three devoted grandchildren, Nathalina Huang Schloneger and husband, Brent (Ohio); Grace Huang Evans and husband James (Ohio); and Sim Jamin Huang and wife, Maria Sarnacki (Malaysia); and her only child, daughter, Shirley Whittier Huang (VT & Ohio). Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Ida Olmsted, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends, among them Mary Ellen Howe (Charley) & Lisa Howe Tracz of Illinois, who will miss that sweet smile and spirit and unconditional love that she so freely gave.
That's our Winnie! Gary also enjoyed hiking and camping with his friends and family. No point of interest or landmark was too far away or too difficult to reach; “you can go there!” was a commonly uttered phrase. More recently, Gary enjoyed planting and tending to his fruit trees at his home in Lillieville. The trees that he planted years ago are now bearing fruit, and they will serve as a reminder of his attentiveness to detail and stewardship of nature.
