C. WALTER DEWEY
(Died September 21, 2011)
U.S. Veteran

Randolph, VT - C. Walter Dewey passed away quietly on September 21, 2011 after a brief illness.

C. Walter Dewey was born in Brookfield Vt August 28, 1917. His parents were Frank S and Mary (Howard) Dewey. He attended the one room school house on West Street (now a barn at Churchill's farm), Randolph High School and graduated from Vermont State Agricultural School (now VTC) in 1937, where he excelled in track. After graduation, he briefly worked on a farm in Billerica, MA where he practiced all that he had learned in Aggie School. Following the destruction and devastation of the 1938 hurricane, he worked for the federal government repairing and rebuilding homes all up and down the East coast. Shortly before being inducted into the army in April of 1941, he married Ramona J. Allen of Randolph VT.

While serving in WWll, he fought in Germany, Belgium, and France. He survived the hell of landing on Omaha Beach and went on to fight throughout the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of ’44-’45. Returning home from Europe, he worked for the newly formed Vermont State Police, Macphail’s lumber mill, Hall Brothers Construction Co., and Vermont Structural Steel (in Burlington). In the mid-’60s he formed his own company and built many new houses in and around Randolph, as well as renovating several old houses. He built the last two houses in which he lived. After early retirement, he was still in demand for his craft. He often commented that if he knew he was going to live so long, he would have waited until full retirement age to retire!

Walter was active in his community, serving as village trustee, town selectman, and on various boards with local financial institutions. He also was a member of the NRA, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, the American Legion, and the VFW. He belonged to the VT Gas and Steam Engine Association, and enjoyed participating in their shows.

In his younger years, Walt (as he preferred to be called) lived for hunting, be it rabbit, bird, deer or caribou. In his later years, he enjoyed having barbecues, playing cards, and sugaring. When snowmobiles came into vogue, he bought one and loved being out on winter days. Four wheeling was also a favorite activity, as was working on his wood pile.

He loved living in Vermont, and was always expanding his daughters’ knowledge of the local geography. Some Sundays found the family, complete with both sets of grandparents in a jeep on logging or old roads scouting out old cellar holes on mountain tops. Other days found him driving the family to destinations such as the Marble Quarries in Proctor or the toll road on Mount Mansfield.

Walt was proud of the fact that he and his wife of 60 years had sent all 5 of their daughters on to higher education, regardless of the number of times they had to remortgage their home.

He married Mary Hutchinson in Sept of 2001. He enjoyed her zest for life, the many senior citizen trips they went on, and her many family gatherings. They enjoyed activities such as biking, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, and playing golf. He is survived by his wife Mary of ten years, his brother David Dewey, daughters Phyllis Kadlub, of South Royalton, Pauline Barnes and husband Ronald, of Randolph, Priscilla Larocque, of Tunbridge, Pamela Levasseur and husband Rob, of Jericho and Patricia Dewey and partner John Foster of East Thetford as well as stepchildren Mark Hutchinson and wife Nancy of Randolph Center, Gary Hutchinson and wife Melissa of Bridport, and Marla Tillberg and husband Joel of Randolph. He has eight grandchildren: Christina Fay, Michaeline Corkum, Aaron and Adam Larocque, Angie Poulin, Jacqueline Merriam, David and Matthew Levasseur; and eight step-grandchildren: Jenna and Dustin Hutchinson, Erik, Ira, and Andrew Tillberg, and Aaron, Abby, and Anne Hutchinson. He has 20 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. C Walter was predeceased by his parents, a brother (Howard), his sisters Laura and Helen, and his first wife.

A celebration of his life, with full military honors, will take place at the Veteran's cemetery Chapel in Randolph Center Vt on October 7 at 1 pm. A gathering will follow at the Langevin House at VTC. Donations to the VNA and Hospice of VT and NH (PO Box 976, WRJ VT 05001) or the VFW (7 School Street, Randolph, VT 05060) would be welcome in lieu of flowers. Burial will take place at a later date.

PRISCILLA Y. SMITH
(Died June 22, 2011)

Priscilla Grace Yeaw Smith died June 22, 2011, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Ft. Collins, Colorado.

She was born August 29, 1932 in Williamsville, VT the daughter of Earl Frank and Lillian Mae (Trevorrow) Yeaw.

Priscilla attended East Dover schools and graduated from Brattleboro High School in 1949. She continued her education at Fletcher Allen Hospital School of Nursing, Burlington, graduating in 1953.

On September 11, 1954, she married Robert “Bob” Smith in East Dover at her parent’s house. Mr. Smith died in 1980.

Growing up in East Dover, Priscilla enjoyed going to the Dawn Dances at the Dover Common and watching the Brattleboro Maples Baseball Team. She worked with her mother hosting guests at her parent’s home, Pleasant View Farm.

In 1948, Pleasant View Farm burned to the ground. As a result, the East Dover Volunteer Fire Department was formed.

Priscilla’s work history was varied. She worked as a registered nurse at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital 1953-1954, Brightlook Hospital, St. Johnsbury, 1954-1957 and Gifford Memorial Hospital, Randolph, 1958-1961. In addition, Priscilla worked for various doctors and clinics in the Randolph area.

Priscilla loved to discuss politics, was a staunch Democrat and a big supporter of Phil Hoff and was “tickled pink” when he became the first Democratic Governor of Vermont in 1962.

Throughout her life, Priscilla was an animal lover and advocate. As a young girl she wished to become a veterinarian, but given the era, this was not to be. Following her clinic work and until her retirement, Priscilla was able to blend these loves in her work with Dr. Arms, DVM at the Randolph Animal Hospital. She enjoyed farming with Harland Perley in S. Royalton for twenty-five years helping to care for the cows and her two goats.

In 2000 Priscilla received an award from Secretary of State, Deborah Markowitz, for her 20+ years of service to the town of Randolph. Her service included her time as Randolph Health Officer (26 years), her time on the Planning Commission, the Board of Civil Authority, and the Police Committee. In addition she was the Health Officer for the town of Bethel for many years. Priscilla was also active with the Red Cross Blood Bank and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

In 2002 she was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship by Priscilla and Arnold Spahn through the Randolph Rotary Club. This was a tremendous honor for her and one that she cherished and appreciated.

Priscilla was a bright and curious woman and prided herself on her ability to learn anything she needed. Her hobbies included gardening, chair caning, making jams, jellies and pickles. As her children remember, she would always welcome their friends with open arms and make them feel welcome and “right at home”. She enjoyed helping and caring for others and maintained a wicked sense of humor. She could always be counted on for a laugh!

Priscilla is survived by her son Jeffrey and his companion Lynne Mulhern of East Dover, Vermont, her daughter Lesley Murray and her husband Lester of Fort Collins, Colorado, and her son Peter and his wife Kimberly as well as her three grandsons Tyler, Cory and Ian of St. Albans, Vermont. In addition Priscilla is survived by her cousin Patty (Trevorrow) and husband Bob Haas of West Minster, Vermont and Lester and Lesley’s son Lyle Murray, his wife Jackie and their children Logan and Taylor. She was predeceased by a sister, Sylvia Mae Yeaw.

A memorial service for Priscilla will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2:00 PM at Day Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 25, 11:00 AM at the Dover Center cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Priscilla’s memory may be made to Humane Societies, Hospice, Alzheimer’s Association or East Dover Vermont Fire Department.
