HARRY BENSON WATTON, II
(September 13, 1927 - November 4, 2011)
U.S. Veteran
Randolph Center, VT - Harry Benson Watton II, 84, died peacefully at his home at Penny Brook Farm on November 4 after a feisty and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born September 13, 1927 of Harry Benson Watton, lawyer, and Helen Garrigues Watton, homemaker, in Abington, Pennsylvania. He spent his childhood in the Philadelphia area and graduated from Lafayette College with a B.A. in English. He went on to take business courses at the Wharton School. He often told the story of how he was drafted into the army after his Freshman year in college, and then discharged after 11 months. Because he did not serve for a complete year, he was redrafted right after college and served in Korea as a communications instructor at a U.S. Air Force airfield. Upon his return to the states he taught high school English in Florida for a year, and then after working with companies in the petroleum, steel, rubber, and advertising industries, he landed a job at Union Camp Corporation, a forest product company which was recently bought by International Paper, and headquartered first in New York City and later Wayne, New Jersey, His career with this company spanned over more than 30 years, both as Manager of Sales Administration and Product Manager of Bulk Packaging. He received several awards from Union Camp, and was the first employee at the company to ever be honored with the Diamond Arc Lifetime Honor Award. Harry Watton was a true Renaissance man. As a young man he aspired to be a writer, and leaves behind many poems and short stories, including the self-published Variations on Little Red Riding Hood. He contributed numerous articles to business and professional publications and is the author of the book New Product Planning - A Practical Guide for Diversification. He always had a deep yen for learning and was extremely well read in the classics, in history, philosophy, anthropology, physics, religion, astronomy, and music. He was particularly well versed in the music of Frederic Chopin and could name the composition, key, and opus number of any Chopin work upon hearing the first measure. He taught himself how to the play the piano but despaired that he really had little talent for it. He had an acute sense of mathematics and managed his investments and those of his children and also some friends through the stock market. Since living in Vermont he immersed himself with his wife in recorded college-level lectures by the Teaching Company and completed over 200 courses. He was also an expert birder, a lifelong interest that was generated from being an Eagle Scout, where he learned the art of falconry. His North American birding life list includes 502 species. His greatest pleasure was puttering on his 40 acres, collecting and splitting wood, maintaining his network of hiking paths and then enjoying a gourmet dinner and a bottle of fine wine with his wife.
He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Robert Brexton Watton; young son, Frederic Marshall Watton; and his first wife, the former Ramona Marshall. He leaves his wife of 24 years, Janet D. Watton of Randolph Center; a son, Harry Benson Watton III of Stroudsberg PA; a daughter, Barbara Helen Dietz of Sebring FL; three step-children: Leslie Vosshall of New York City, Nicole Dugan of San Francisco, and Peter Vosshall of Bainbridge Island, WA; two grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.
At his request there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. A concert in his memory is planned for a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chandler Center for the Arts, 71-73 Main Street, Randolph VT 05060.
