R.C. Lamberton
Bethel — R. Curtis Lamberton, 88, of Bethel, died Thursday evening, June 5, 2003 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.
He was born Oct. 31, 1914 in Cabot; the son of Raymond W. and Victoria (Nardini) Lamberton. He attended Cabot schools and worked on the family farm/sawmill, and for the Civilian Conservation Corps building the highway through Groton State Forest.
He attended Lyndon Normal School, where he met and married
Kathryn (Kay) Munn in 1939. She died in 1990.
He taught school in East Montpelier, then taught biology and shop at Bradford Academy from 1944-56, also serving as assistant principal. While there, he was a Boy Scout leader, Little League coach, and member of the Masonic Lodge. He attended UVM and received his MA in psychology from St. Michael’s College.
He was a gear shaper in Springfield, until moving to Bethel in 1956. He became a principal of Whitcomb High School, where he taught sociology, psychology, and was a guidance counselor. He operated an antique shop in Bethel, and retired as head of the guidance department for the Hartford School District.
He returned to Bradford in 1988, and married
Dorothy "Dot" Hatch Johnson in 1991, returning to Bethel in 2002. She died last October.
He had summered in Yankeetown, Fla., where he was active in the Presbyterian Church and community events.
He was a member of the Bethel Rotary, United Church of Christ, Bradford Senior Center, the Orange County Retired Teacher’s Association and was a Bethel lister.
He enjoyed fly fishing, carpentry, woodworking, and furniture refinishing.
Survivors include his son, R. Scott Lamberton of Bethel, daughter, Carla Hodgdon of Bethel; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his brothers John and Philip and sister, Theresa McCarty.
Memorial services were held Tuesday afternoon, June 10 at the United Church in Bethel. Officiating were Pastor Richard Dumont, Rev. Harvey Bartlett, and Rev. Steve Seminerio, and Linda Dean Orr was the organist. The officiants shared their memories of Curt, and several readings and scripture. Friends and associates then shared remembrances. The congregation sang "In The Garden, " "The Old Rugged Cross, " and "Little Brown Church in the Wildwood."
Burial took place Tuesday morning at the Durant cemetery in Lower Cabot, with Rev. Harvey Bartlett, officiating. Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Arlene L. Ashley
STOCKBRIDGE — Arlene L. Ashley, 77, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at her home.
She was born in Rochester, Oct. 11, 1925, the daughter of Rochester and Prudence (Manning) Shepard. She was educated in Rochester schools and graduated from Rochester High School.
She married
Benjamin F. Ashley Dec. 4, 1943 in Bethel. He died Sept. 24, 1988.
She worked for G.W. Plastics in Bethel for over 20 years, retiring in 1987. She enjoyed reading, music, flowers and cooking.
Survivors include three sons: Benjamin Ashley of South Royalton, Edwin Ashley of Bethel, and Ronald Ashley of South Royalton; two brothers: Gerald "Bud" Shepard and Richard Shepard of Rochester; three sisters: Helen Martin of Winchendon, Mass.; Sherry Robinson of Warren, and Linda Shepard of Rochester; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by a brother, Lawrence "Sonny" Shepard.
Graveside services were held Monday, June 9, at the Cherry Hill cemetery in Bethel, with the Rev. Dr. Claire Bamberg officiating. There were no calling hours.

Hilda Kayes
RANDOLPH CENTER — Hilda Louise Kayes, 90, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph.
She was born in New Britain, Conn. April 13, 1913, the daughter of Karl and Anna (Neuholt) Schwartz. She was educated in Hartford, Conn. schools and at beautician school in Albany N.Y.
She owned and operated two beauty salons in New Britain, Conn.
She married
Albert Kayes in 1946. He died in 1986.
She was president of the West Hartford, (Conn.) Garden Club, enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad, gardening, oil painting, sculpturing, flower arranging, and reading (especially mysteries).
Survivors include two sons: Christopher Kayes of East Dover, and Clement Kayes of Oakpark, Ill.; a brother, Karl Schwarz of Merrill, Ore.; two grandchildren; Kristin and Cynthia; three great grandchildren; Devon, Zachary and Frankie.
She was pre-deceased by a sister, Anne Kayes.
Funeral services will be held at the Sts. Donatian and Rogatian Catholic Church Friday, June 13, at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. John Milanese officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday, June 12, from 2-4:30 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Lois May Rix
ALAMEDA, CALIF. — Lois May Rix, 77, died May 28, 2003 in Alameda, Calif.
She was born July 15, 1925 in Randolph, Vt. She attended Randolph schools and went on to receive her BA and Masters at New York University.
She worked for many years at New York University Hospital and was part of an elite team monitoring the progress of Joseph Kennedy, father of the president, during his stay at the hospital. She and her team conferred with President John F. Kennedy during his father’s stay.
She and her family were long-time residents of Randolph. Her father, William W. Rix; mother, Elizabeth May Tatro Rix; and brother, Herschel Daniel, were all born in the area.
She was predeceased by her brother, by 22 months.
She lived in Alameda, Calif. near her brother and sister-in-law, Sally O. Rix, who survives her. She is also survived by two nieces, a nephew and a great-niece and great-nephew.
She was very active in the Lake Merritt Methodist Church and served as president of the Women’s Guild for many years. She was greatly involved in church out-reach programs and will be greatly missed by both church members and her family.
W. Wayne Wheatley
E. BROOKFIELD — W. Wayne Wheatley, 81, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005 at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin. He was born June 1, 1924 in Barre, the son of Walter H. and Grace (Trask) Wheatley.
He attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1942. He continued his education at the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in Amherst, Mass. and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge from the service, he returned home and married
Shirley (Bennett) Peake January 3, 1947 in East Brookfield.
He was a dairy farmer and had a trucking business. He also traveled to area farms to do artificial insemination. He was a member of the East Brookfield Congregational Church and a 60-year member of the Brookfield Mystic Star-Phoenix Lodge # 79 F. & A.M. In earlier years, he enjoyed camping and in later years, he enjoyed wintering in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Wheatley of East Brookfield; four sons: Stanley Wheatley and wife, Sharon, of East Brookfield; Lynford Wheatley and wife, Jill, of Randolph Center; Alan Wheatley of East Brookfield, and Dale Wheatley of Shelton, Wash.; a daughter Diane Pettersen and husband, Carl, of East Brookfield; two sisters: Bertha Benway and husband, Ernest, of Chester; and Rebecca Reynolds and husband, Howard, of Lyndonville; a brother, John Wheatley and wife, Janet, of East Brookfield; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Dec. 23 at 1 p.m. at the East Brookfield Congregational Church, with Pastor Douglas Cameron officiating. Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 22 from 7-8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
