Nancy B. Flesch
TUNBRIDGE — Nancy Beth Flesch, 61, died Sunday, April 17, 2005, at her home in Tunbridge after a long illness.
She was born March 19, 1944, in Waltham, Mass., the daughter of Arnold H. and Elaine R. (Higgins) Rosenbaum. She attended school in Belmont and Sudbury, Mass. She worked two years at Metropolitan State Hospital in Waltham, before moving to New Jersey.
On Dec. 31, 1963, she married
David Post of Key Port. N.J. They were later divorced.
On Feb. 1, 1971, she married
Charles P. Flesch of Hamilton, N.J. While in New Jersey, she worked at Mercer Care Center in Hamilton Square and Meadows Lake Nursing Home in East Windsor. In April of 1979 they moved to Tunbridge, where she worked at the Tunbridge Village Store.
She was the past president of Fidelity Theta Rho Girls Club #5 in Waltham, Mass., and a member of the Heights Town Church of God in Heights Town, N.J. She was very artistic, enjoying drawing, writing, and calligraphy. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandson.
Survivors include her husband of Tunbridge; two sons, David Post, Jr. of Hartland and Scott Flesch of Tunbridge; three daughters, Laura Jean Post of Bellingham, Mass., Elaina Andrea Corey of Warner, N.H., and Wendy Sue Smith of Tunbridge; 13 grandchildren and a great-grandson; three stepsons, David Flesch, Robert Flesch and Charles Flesch, Jr., all of Trenton, N.J.; a brother, Edmund Rosenbaum of Pine Crest, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no public calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 23, at 2 p.m. at the Green Mountain Gospel Chapel in Randolph.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt., 05602. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home on Main Street in Chelsea is in charge of arrangements.
Sandra R. Pettingell
BOISE, IDAHO — Sandra Pettingell, 70, died April 12, 2005. She was born Feb. 13, 1935, at Gifford Memorial Hospital in Randolph, Vt., the daughter of Henry and Catherine Richards.
She raised four children while attending Diorr’s School of Cosmetology. Later in life, she moved to Massachusetts and then to Newton, N.H., with her second husband, calling it home for 26 years. In retirement, they found Boise, Idaho and moved there in 1999.
She truly loved Boise, and made many lasting friendships with her neighbors over the past five years. Raising Maltese and Pekingese dogs was a comfort to her, despite all that fuzzy fur. She truly loved her pets and her cat, too.
Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Peter; two daughters: Sheila Martel, of Boise, Idaho; and Pamela and her family, of East Brookfield; and many friends in the Randolph area.
No formal funeral services will be held in Boise, but services will be held at a later date (TBA) in Brookfield. Idaho arrangements are by Summers Funeral Homes of Boise, Idaho.
Winona A. Mahan
MIDDLEBURY — Formerly of Randolph, Winona A. Mahan, 89, died peacefully, April 14, 2005 at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.
She was born July 12, 1915 in Randolph, the daughter of Frank and Ellna (Manning) Buttles. She was raised in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School.
She married
Aubrey Mahan in 1934 in Randolph. He died in 1984. She and her husband lived in Tucson, Ariz. for 40 years, where she was active in the Methodist church and in her community. She was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Order of the Easter Star for many years. She delivered Meals on Wheels and was always available to help others.
She especially enjoyed her brisk daily walks, playing cards and knitting beautiful items for her family and friends. In 1991, she moved back to Vermont to be near her family.
Survivors include a sister, Madeline Cone of E. Middlebury; two nieces: Earlene McMenamy and her husband, Ed, of San Francisco, Calif.; and Sylvia Boyea and her husband, Ken, of Weybridge; two nephews: Douglas Cone and his wife, Connie, of Shoreham; and Michael Cone and his wife, Joanne, of E. Middlebury; and five great-nieces and nephews, whom she enjoyed seeing very much.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elderly Services, Box 581, Middlebury, Vt. 05753.
At her request there will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at a later date in the East Randolph cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home of Randolph.
Harrison Hayward
RANDOLPH — Harrison H. Hayward, 84, of Randolph, died early Wednesday morning, April 20, 2005, at Gifford Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Randolph, the son of Dr. Harrison and Grace (Goodall) Hayward. He was educated in Randolph and graduated from Randolph High School in 1939.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, spending much of his tour in Germany and Belgium. After his discharge from the military he worked for over 40 years at Savage Furniture Company and Ethan Allen Furniture as fininshing supervisor and quality control manager.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 62 years, and was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lois Hayward of Randolph; two sons, Scott Hayward of Burlington and Don Hayward of Randolph; two grandchildren, Donna Dejoinville and Tammy Ladd of Randolph; and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours or service at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date, at the family’s convenience. Contributions in his memory may be made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation, 710 West 168th Street, New York, N.Y., 10032. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
A. Jane Fredette
RANDOLPH — A. Jane Fredette, 89, died April 15, 2005, at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.
She was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Terre Haute, Ind., the daughter of Walter and Martha (Guick) Douglas. She graduated from high school in Terre Haute, Ind., and attended business school.
In earlier years, she enjoyed playing the organ and oil painting. She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #15 in Randolph.
She married
Dr. Frederic Fredette, who died in 1983. She worked with him in his office for many years in the Barre area and later in Randolph. For the past years, she lived at the Windover House, in Randolph, and recently at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.
Survivors include a half-sister, Dollie Entrican of Paris, Ill.; and close friends, Claire McMahon and Bev Wilmont, and Ted and Jane Turner of Spring Hill, Fla.
At her request, there are no services scheduled. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Lilla Clancy
ROCHESTER — Lilla Clancy died Monday afternoon, April 18, 2005, at the home of her daughter, Carol McLoughlin, in Rochester.
She was born in Rochester, the daughter of Warren and Grace (Perkins) Howe. She graduated from Rochester High School at the age of 16, and from Fanny Allen Memorial School of Practical Nursing. She worked as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction for many years.
Survivors include her two children: Carol of Rochester and Charles of Valrico, Fla.; three grandchildren, Pete McLoughlin and wife Susan of Kernersville, N.C., Kristi Fuller and her husband Douglas of Granville, and Jason McLoughlin and his wife Amy of Burlington; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Halsey Howe and his wife Nona of Randolph; two nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joe Howe, and his wife, Marie.
At her request, private graveside services will be held at Woodlawn cemetery in Rochester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Valley Rescue Squad, PO Box 131, Rochester, Vt., 05767.
Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Raymond E. Courtemanche
WHITE RIVER JCT. — Raymond E. Courtemanche, 77, died suddenly Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Oct. 13, 1925 in Hanover, N.H., a son of Percy "Pud" and Louise M. (Roberts) Courtemanche. He attended school in Hartford and lived his entire life in the Town of Hartford. He farmed with his parents for a number of years on Dothan Road in Hartford.
He was married
to Blanche Therrien June 28, 1947.
He owned and operated Courtemanche Oil Company for many years and worked in the summer driving a truck for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company. In 1970, he sold his business to Agway Oil in Norwich, where he worked for a time before becoming a self-employed painter. He later delivered papers for the Valley News before becoming a caretaker for several properties in the Jericho District.
Throughout his life, he had cattle and cut firewood and was lovingly known by his family as the "King Woodpig;" he was a loving husband and devoted family man.
He was a 55-year member of the White River Jct. Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Michaud Council Knights of Columbus.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael, in 1988; a brother, Donald Courtemanche; and a sister, Marjorie Boucher.
He is survived by his wife of White River Jct.; four sons; Ronald Courtemanche of Tunbridge; Edward Courtemanche of West Bolton; Raymond Courtemanche Jr. of Bluffton, S.C. and John Courtemanche of West Hartford; three daughters: Lin Courtemanche of Lebanon, N.H.; Susan Courtemanche-Condon of Marshfield, and Michele Blanchard of Sharon; 10 grandsons and two granddaughters; four brothers: Carl J. Courtemanche of Apache Jct., Ariz.; Robert F. Courtemanche of Port Charlotte, Fla., Roger J. Courtemanche of Bradford; and Walter H. Courtemanche of West Lebanon, N.H.; four sisters: Pauline Davey of North Fort Myers, Fla.; Marilyn Gates and Jean O’Neil, both of White River Jct.; and Claire Shea of Westfield, Mass.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Jct., Sunday, March 9. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, March 10 at St. Anthony’s Church in White River Jct. Burial followed in the Mt. Olivet cemetery.
