Gregory Harrness

SOUTH ROYALTON — Gregory Keith Harrness, 51, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

He was born in Randolph, Jan. 31, 1951, a son of Mitchell and Corinne (Campbell) Harrness. A life-time resident of Randolph and South Royalton, he graduated from Randolph Union High School in 1969. On Sept. 21, 2002, he was married to Joyce Champney in Royalton.

He worked on farms, for R.B. Cameron Tree Experts in Randolph. For 10 years he was a supervisor at Vermont Pure Springs in Randolph Center.

He was a former member of the Randolph Fish and Game Club. He attended Green Mountain Gospel Chapel in Randolph.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, outdoor sports and NASCAR races.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; five sons, Stephen G. and Jeremey K. Harrness, both of Bethel; Mark Ives of Canaan, Timothy Silovich of South Royalton and Christopher D. Dartt of Royalton; two daughters, Tina Spaulding of Royalton and Leigh N. Kerr of Forest Dale; his parents of Randolph; two brothers, Stephen Harrness of Enosburg Falls, and Mitchell G. Harrness of Randolph; a sister, Deborah Richards of Bethel; his former wife, Ethel of Royalton; several nieces and nephews and eight grandchildren.

Calling hours were held Sunday, Nov. 24 at Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Funeral Services were held Monday morning, Nov. 25 at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Rev. Ronald E. Rilling, officiating. Phyllis Hawley was the organist. Rev. Rilling shared letters written by Greg’s wife, Joyce and other family members. Jane Harrness, Greg’s sister-in-law, offered a violin solo. Greg’s son, Jeremy, shared a poem and some personal reflections.

Private Family Burial took place on Tuesday at the Riverview cemetery in South Royalton.

Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Royalton Rescue, South Royalton, Vt. 05068; or Lupus Foundation of America, 1300 Piccard Drive, No. 200, Rockville, Md. 20850.

R. Barbara Hungerford

BETHEL — Ruth Barbara Hungerford, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Mayo Nursing Home in Northfield.

She was born April 22, 1913, in Brockton, Mass., the only child of Florence Ruth (Welch) and Roy Kellerman.

She received her early education in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and graduated from Northfield Seminary in 1929. She attended Simmons College and Salter Secretarial School, Inc. She assisted her father in his business, Worcester Oil Company, Worcester, Mass., until moving to Bethel in the early 1940s. She was secretary for Bethel Mills and Valley Motor Sales in Bethel.

She married Donald R. Hungerford of Bethel March 16, 1949. He died July 21, 1988.

She was past matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Bethel and held many other offices in the order throughout her years of membership. She was an auditor and trustee of public funds for the Town of Bethel for several years.

She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Bethel and also of the ladies fellowship. She was an active volunteer and served on several local committees in town for many years. She was well known for her lovely flower gardens and was a member of the local Flower and Garden Club.

She was an accomplished seamstress, excelling in the art of rug braiding and hooking. She and her husband enjoyed vegetable gardening, bird watching, traveling and attending Shrine gatherings.

Survivors include cousins Richard Kellerman and Shirley McBain, and their families of Florida; and her husband's nieces, Gertrude (Hungerford) Denison of Randolph Center and Frances (Hungerford) Rowell.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 26, at the United Church of Bethel, with the Rev. Dr. Claire Bamberg officiating. Phyllis Hawley was the organist. Reflections were given by Roger and Gertrude Denison, with remembrances led by Rev. Bamberg. White River Lodge #84 of the Order of the Eastern Star took part in the service. The service concluded with the song, "The Northfield Benediction."

Burial followed at Fairview cemetery in Bethel, where pallbearers were Jim Abbott, Kent Batcheller, Willis Whitaker, Dick Huntley, and Roger Denison.

Arrangements were by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Helen D. Godfrey

RUTLAND — Helen D. Godfrey, 91, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 25, 1910 in Newark, N.J. daughter of Helen Grecsner and Charles Doma.

She started nurses training at age 16, and after receiving her RN, continued her education at Columbia University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation she taught nursing in Washington, D.C., and Elizabeth, N.J. She taught basic sciences, but especially enjoyed the field of microbiology.

In 1940, she married Dr. Alan Oakes Godfrey, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Burlington, Vt. They practiced medicine in Newark, N.J. until his death in 1971. She managed the office and assisted him with minor surgeries.

Throughout their lives, the Godfrey family developed a love for Vermont. They summered at Cedar Beach on the shores of Lake Champlain, and enjoyed hiking Mt. Mansfield, Camel’s Hump and the Lincoln Range.

After her husband’s death she moved to Maplewood, N.J. where she was a member of the Morrow Memorial Methodist Church. She loved classical music and attending concerts. In 2000, she moved to Rutland to be near her daughters.

Her joy in life was taking part in the accomplishments of her granddaughters: Editor Jean-Godfrey June, Dr. Laura Watt, Dr. Sara Vargas Moolman, Dr. Hannah Vargas Stechschulte and Dr. Alison Vargas.

She is survived by three daughters: Alice Cummings of Menlo Park, Calif.; Ann Vargas of Rutland, Vt. and Susan Mills of Randolph Center, Vt.; five granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, a niece and brother-in-law.

She was predeceased by her sister, Elsie Oravetz.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 30 at Tossing Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alan Oakes Godfrey Memorial Fund at the University of Vermont, College of Medicine, Burlington, Vt. 05405-0068.

E. Ruby Leahy

BETHEL — E. Ruby Leahy, 82, formerly of Stratford, Conn., died Friday evening, Aug. 25, 2000 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

She was born Oct. 24, 1917 in Stratford, Conn. the daughter of Edward and Johanna (Bratz) Unsderfer.

She attended Stratford Conn. schools and graduated from Stratford (Conn.) High School. She married Joseph D. Leahy October 30, 1943 in Stratford, Conn. Mr. Leahy died in 1983.

Mrs. Leahy was a real estate broker. She owned and operated Elm Real Estate in Stratford, Conn. from 1965 until 1983. Following the death of her husband she sold her real estate business and took over the J.D. Leahy Machine Co. in Shelton, Conn. until retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Leahy moved to Bethel in March of this year to live with her daughter, Debra Leahy. She enjoyed reading and loved being "Grammy".

She leaves two sons; David J. Leahy of Jacksonville, Fla. and James E. Leahy of Norwalk, Conn.; three daughters; Joann M. Leahy of Ambler, Penn.; Donna K. Feldman of N. Stonington, Conn., and Debra Leahy of Bethel, 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was pre-deceased by three brothers and three sisters.

Memorial services will be held in Connecticut at a later date.

Friends wishing to, may make memorial contributions to either The Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, N.H. 03766 or to; Gifford Medical Center, P.O. Box 2000 Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.

Florence E. Rice

GAYSVILLE — Florence E. Rice, 89, died April 28, 2001, following an auto accident in Clarendon.

She was born in Bethel, Feb. 11, 1912, the daughter of Walter and Alice (Davis) Flint. She was educated at the Camp Brook School, Gaysville schools and Whitcomb High School.

She married Benjamin Rice Dec. 31, 1939. He died Oct. 21, 1977.

She worked as a housekeeper, at Van Raalt Co., Randolph Furniture Co., and Ethan Allen, all in Randolph. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, gardening, reading and horses.

She leaves a son, Theodore ("Ted") Rice of Gaysville; a brother, Ernest Flint of Stockbridge; nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by a brother Otto Flint, and two sisters Mildred Boutwell and Olive Dorman.

Graveside services will be held Thursday May 3, at 1 p.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Bethel, with Rev. Timothy Eberhardt officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.
