George A. Belmain

RANDOLPH — George A. Belmain, 94, died Wednesday evening at Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph.

He was born May 3, 1906, in Presque Isle, Maine, the son of William and Nellie (Walton) Belmain.

He graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1925. He married Alice Rackliffe in 1937. She died in a car accident in 1947. He married Cynthia Corson in 1949. She died in 1995.

From 1925-1936 he was a manager for stores for J.J. Newberry and for McLellen's. In 1936 he opened Belmain's Department Store in Randolph which later joined the Ben Franklin chain. He sold the store to Priscilla and Norman Ouimet in 1972. He opened additional stores in Bethel and South Royalton. In 1952 he purchased the Thomas Store in Randolph from the D.L. Chadwick estate and sold it to Ruth and Pete Cooper in 1972. He purchased the Motor Court on Route 1 in Wells, Maine in 1947. In 1962 he purchased one-third interest in the Twin State Bowling Lanes in West Lebanon, N.H., which he sold in 1972. He retired in 1972 after 46 years in business.

The Belmains wintered in Sarasota, Fla., for 20 years before returning to Randolph on a permanent basis in 1992.

He was a past president of Randolph Rotary Club (1942-43), past president of Vermont Picnic Assoc. in Sarasota, Fla., and had served on Boy Scout committees. He was a member of the Mystic Star-Phoenix Lodge #97 F.&A.M. in Brookfield, First Congregational United Church of Christ, Sarasota, Fla., was a past member of Montague Golf Club in Randolph and was a past director of the Randolph National Bank.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol Belmain of Randolph and Exton, Penna.; two sisters, Joyce Taylor of Scarborough, Maine, and Margaret Staples of N. Berwick, Maine. He was predeceased by a sister, Clara Brewer, and three brothers, David, Errol and William Belmain.

Graveside memorial services will be held April 30 at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph with Rev. Alfred Perry officiating.

Friends may make memorial donations in George's memory to: Menig Extended Care Facility "Patient Activity Fund, " PO Box 2000, Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral home, Randolph.

Mildred Andrewsen

RANDOLPH — Mildred S. Andrewsen, 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, soon after arrival at the Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. She was born in New Haven, Conn. June 3, 1919, the daughter of John J. Sr. and Sigrid (Carlson) Shay.

She was educated in Connecticut schools and graduated from Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven, Conn. she attended Grace Hospital School of Nursing in New Haven.

Mildred worked as a machine operator for New England Dye Casting in West Haven, Conn. and US Motors in Milford, Conn.; and as an emergency room coordinator at St. Raphaels Hospital in New Haven, Conn. for many years. She retired from West Haven High School, where she had worked in the lunch room. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, her family, conversation and the mountains.

She volunteered at Randolph Senior Citizens Center, Gifford Medical Center and the Joslyn House, where she had resided for the past few months.

She leaves a daughter, Janice Renner of Weston Street, a son, Harold Andrewsen of Derby, Conn.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a niece and a nephew.

She was pre-deceased by a brother, John Shay Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Shay.

At her request, there are no services scheduled. Burial will be at the Beaverdale Memorial Park cemetery in New Haven, Conn.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Joslyn House, 16 Maple St., Randolph, Vt. 05060.

Leonard W. Clark Sr.

SOUTH ROYALTON有eonard W. Clark Sr., 73, died Sunday morning, Jan. 21, at his home in South Royalton. He was born January 21, 1928, in Royalton, the son of Ralph E. and Marjorie G. (Lezer) Clark.

He attended schools in Royalton and served in the US Army during World War II. He married Fannie K. Wood May 23, 1948. They lived most of their married life in the town of Royalton, except for nine years in Brighton, Mass. Since 1960 he has lived on Happy Hollow Road.

He worked most of his life in construction, primariliy as a carpenter. Later he worked for five years in the office of Residential Life at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., retiring in March of 1993. Mrs. Clark died Feb. 18, 1993.

He was known by his family and friends as a man who could fix most anything. He enjoyed tinkering on different projects and automobiles. He also enjoyed hunting, going to country fairs and helping his son, Wallace, on the farm. But his greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his mother, two brothers, Lester Clark and Maurice L. Clark, and his twin grandsons, Matthew and Michael Blake.

He is survived by his dear companion, Frances Clark, with whom he had lived for the past two years; two sons, Wallace L. Clark of South Royalton and Leonard W. Clark Jr. of Sharon; three daughters, Susan L. Ashley of Royalton and Sandra L. Blake and Pamela M. Frary, both of South Royalton; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his father, Ralph Clark of Royalton; four brothers, Arnold R. Clark of Tunbridge, Richard V. Clark of Jacksonville, Fla., Freeman E. Clark of Orange, Mass., and Theodore F. Clark of Corinth; three sisters, Lorraine M. Withington, Maydene Lamson and Cheryl Perkins, all of Royalton, and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held Wednesday evening, 7-9 p.m., at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea. A graveside service will be held at a date to be announced later.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Future Farmers of America.

Mary E. Cummings

DOVER, N.H.柚ary Elaine (Mazzolini) Cummings, 76, died on Jan. 22, after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 6, 1924, the daughter of Alfred and Katherine (Donlon) Mazzolini in Randolph. She attended the Randolph schools and then entered the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1946.

She married Herbert F. Cummings, also of Randolph in 1947 and shared his life for 51 years in the N.H. seacoast area.

She taught biology at Westbrook Junior College in Maine, Portsmouth (N.H.) High School and for the last 22 years of her career in the Dover school system. An environmentalist, Mrs. "C, " as most of her students referred to her, was one of the first teachers to introduce ecology as a high school course.

In her active retirement she read extensively, traveled and took extreme interest in the unique estuarial ecosystems that surround the N.H. seacoast area. She also served as a member of the UNH Alumni Reunion committee and greatly supported efforts to raise funds for the University. She leaves behind her three beloved children, their spouses and four grandchildren; William "Fred" Cummings of Franklin, Vt. his wife, Marcy and their children Jason and Rebecca; Katherine (Kate) Brennick of Somersworth, N.H. her husband Patrick and their son, Nicholas; and Jane Angelopoulos of Portsmouth, N.H. her husband John and their son, Drew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation Three Day Pledge, 135 S. La Salle, Dept. 7135, Chicago, Ill. 60674.

Goldie J. Swift

SOUTH STRAFFORD — Goldie J. Swift, 84, formerly of South Strafford, died Tuesday afternoon at the Mayo Healthcare Facility in Northfield. She was born May 11, 1916 in Thetford, Vermont the daughter of Ernest and Grace (Wilber) Palmer.

She attended schools in Swanee Bean and Thetford school districts. She was a housewife and was predeceased by her beloved husband Raymond E. Swift, who died in 1984, and her daughter Winnibel Winters.

She served as President of the South Strafford Ladies Aid Society and President of the South Strafford PTP. She was also a member of the Strafford Congregational Church. She lived in Strafford most of her adult life, moving to Northfield three years ago.

She is survived by her four children, Denzil Swift of South Strafford; Clyde Swift of New York City; Gloria Peterson of East Otis, Mass. Grace White of Barre; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, is in charge of arrangements. There are no calling hours and a graveside service will be held in the spring in the Evergreen cemetery in South Strafford.

Ethel Sirota

ROCHESTER — Ethel ("Aunt Ethel") Sirota, 90, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 21, 2001, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

She was born April 11, 1910, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Abraham and Anna (Lurie) Lipstein.

Ethel attended Newark (N.J.) schools and graduated from New Jersey Normal School in 1929, where she received her teaching certificate. Following her education she worked as a bookkeeper in New York City for several years and later in California. She was also the bookkeeper for the Sabalov Family League which collected dues from over 200 relatives to support elderly relatives, fund educations and new businesses.

She married Stanley Sirota in 1947. He died in 1982.

She moved from California to West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1982 and came to Rochester in 1998 when she moved to The Park House. Spied on the streets of Rochester without a hat during her first Vermont winter, Ethel declared, "I've looked around and Vermonters don't wear hats!"

Ethel loved reading and doing crossword puzzles. She loved the town of Rochester and the clean air of Vermont. She enjoyed her friends at the Park House and had a smile for everyone. Her memory for family events was encyclopedic and she answered all the entertainment questions at the daily Park House "Quiz Kids" afternoon contests.

She leaves a brother, Arthur Lipstein of Maplewood, N.J.; nieces Lucinda, Heather (of Rochester) and Laurey Masterton; and numerous nieces and nephews in the New York area. She was predeceased by a sister, Elsie Masterton, and a brother, Sidney Lipstein.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Park House, Rochester, with Rev. William Daniels officiating. Special music was provided by Larry Hamberlin, Susan Rule, Heather Masterton and Howard Lipstein and many friends and relatives shared memories of Ethel. A buffet meal was provided by Connie Mendell of Occasions Catering.

Friends may make memorial contributions in Ethel's memory to: The Park House, RR 1, Box 10, Rochester, Vt. 05767.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
