Mary H. Kestler
Bethel — Mary H. Kestler, 77, died Monday evening, March 26, 2001 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Jct. She was born Oct. 28, 1923 in Bethel the daughter of Frank and Mary (Marsh) Hart.
She attended Bethel schools and graduated from Whitcomb High School. Following her education she went to work at a defense plant in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. before enlisting in the Army. She served in the Women’s Army Corps from 1944-1946.
After her discharge from the service, she worked as a medical assistant in doctors’ offices in Pawling, N.Y. and Boise, Idaho. In Boise she went into law enforcement where she served as a deputy sheriff from 1963-1979.
She married
Ray Kestler April 4, 1966 in Winnemucca, Nev. He died in 1994. The Kestlers moved to Alburg in 1979 where they owned and operated "Kestler’s Market" until 1985. They moved to Bethel in 1986.
Her memberships included the Women’s Army Corps Maple Leaf Chapter 100 of Vermont and the Arthritis Foundation, Burlington. She was a charter member of the Women’s Memorial Foundation.
She leaves two sons, Daniel P. Kestler of Pocatello, Idaho and Michael J. Kestler of St. Augustine, Fla., a step-son Danny R. Kestler of Oregon City, Oregon, a step-daughter, Faye Brester of Polson, Mont.; four brothers: Frank Hart of Randolph, Robert Hart of Barnard, Richard Hart of Lady Lake, Fla. and William Hart of Bethel; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by a son, David J. Kestler and a brother, John Hart.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 30 at 2 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home, with Rev. Kent Lipka of the United Church of Bethel officiating. Burial will be in the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery, Randolph Center, at a later date. Calling hours will be Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the So. Royalton Senior Center So. Royalton, Vt. 05068 or to the Women’s Army Corps Veterans Assoc. 1265 Kelton Rd. E. Montpelier, Vt. 05651.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
Lois R. LaBounty
RANDOLPH — Lois R. LaBounty, 67, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center in Berlin, after a long illness.
She was born in Holland, Vt. Aug. 11, 1933, the daughter of Harold and Gwendolyn (Perkins) Rye. She was educated in South Burlington schools and graduated from Burlington High School in 1951.
She enjoyed arts and crafts, gardening, reading, snowmobiling and being with her grandchildren.
She married
Kermit LaBounty, Sept. 19, 1953 in Burlington. They farmed for many years in Randolph.
Survivors include her husband of Randolph, a son, Matthew LaBounty of Braintree; a daughter, Lora Churchill of Brookfield; a brother, Arthur Rye of Burlington; a sister, Bernice Brisson of Williston; five grandchildren: Amy Ferris, Brenda Flint, Tina Churchill, Erle LaBounty and Danae LaBounty; and a step-great-grandson, Josh Ferris.
At her request there are no services scheduled.
The family will receive friends and family at the Braintree Town Hall, Sunday, April 1, from 2-5 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance, 36 South Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.
Clifton J. Alexander
BRANDON — Clifton J. Alexander, 89, of Brandon, formerly of Randolph, died Monday afternoon, March 26 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., as a result of injuries received earlier in the day in an auto accident in Berlin. Zillah C. Palmer
RANDOLPH CENTER — Zillah C. Palmer, 75, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 16, surrounded by her family at her home in Randolph Center. She was born Sept. 20, 1925, in East Hanover, N.H., the daughter of Harry H. and Mary L. (Cook) Ward.
She moved to Strafford when she was three years old. She attended the Miller Pond one room school in Strafford and then her first three years of high school at Thetford Academy.
She married
Gardner Palmer of North Thetford November 22, 1944. They lived in North Thetford until 1959, when they moved to South Ryegate. During this time she worked as a nurse's aide at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H.
In 1969, she moved to Randolph Center where she lived the rest of her life. She continued to work as a nurse's aide at the Gifford Memorial Hospital and the Tranquility Nursing Home, both in Randolph. Later she provided home health care for two gentlemen in Randolph, Newton Ryerson and O.C. Chadwick. She also helped her husband and later her son with daily chores on their family farm.
While she was in her late 50s, she went back to school and completed her high school training and received her GED through Randolph High School in 1983. She continued her education by taking college courses through the Community College of Vermont and other correspondence courses.
She shared her talent for knitting and crocheting with her family and friends with gifts of mittens, socks, and afghans. She will be lovingly remembered for her hard work, strong will and her green thumb.
She was a member of the Randolph Center Congregational Church, past Matron of the Corinthian Chapter #42 Order of the Eastern Star in Wells River, N.H., and past Matron of the Beulah Chapter #15 Order of the Eastern Star in Randolph.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, of Randolph Center; three sons, Ray H. Palmer of Milton, Roger A. Palmer of Randolph Center and Walter G. Palmer of Braintree; two daughters, Margaret Smith of Randolph and Joyce Wenzel of Hebron, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Fredora Lavalette of Sharon, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Walter G. Palmer; three brothers, Edward Ward, Oscar Ward and Quinten Ward; and three sisters, Katherine Kniffin, Ivis Thurston and Nellie Cook.
Visiting hours were held at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Sunday evening. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 19, at the Randolph Center Congregational Church with Rev. Alfred Perry officiating. The congregation sang "In the Garden" led by organist Esther Brigham. Remembrances were shared by the family and three poems, "The Star, " "Song of Life" and "This I Pray" were read by Rev. Perry. Members of the Order of the Eastern Star honored Zillah with a short service, and then Rev. Perry shared scripture readings and reflections. Fellowship was hosted by the ladies of the church in the church hall immediately following the service.
A committal service will be held in the spring in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery in North Thetford. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vermont & New Hampshire, 36 South Main Street, Randolph, VT 05060.
O. Eugene Toler
MARLBOROUGH, N.H. — O. Eugene Toler, 66, of Marlborough, N.H., died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15, shortly after arrival at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. He suffered a heart attack while visiting family in Randolph.
He was born July 29, 1934, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Orville A. and Earline (Schrader) Toler.
He grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Central Missouri State College, where he received his master's degree in mathematics and physics. He had been in management of engineering and development with Honeywell in Lexington, Mass., Koll-Morgen/ISG in Keene, N.H., and was a consultant for Flir Systems in Portland, Ore., until retiring in 1998.
He was married
to Beverly Long on Oct. 22, 1960 in Sedalia, Mo.
He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his ex-wife and friend, Beverly and Dick Marois of Randolph; a son, Todd A. Toler of Pembroke, N.H.; a daughter, Tracy L. Kangas of Randolph; a step-sister, Pat Buford of Missouri; and three grandchildren.
Private family services were held Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Rev. Susan Nixon officiating. A public committal service will be held in June with time and place to be announced later.

Eleanor N. Roberts
CHELSEA — Eleanor N. Roberts, 90, died Friday, Feb. 16, at the Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. She was born August 12, 1910, in Montpelier, the daughter of George and Grace (Clough) Nichols.
She lived her early years in Montpelier, graduating from Montpelier Seminary High School in 1928. She continued her education at Montpelier Seminary, receiving her teacher's certificate in 1929. Eleanor taught school for 10 years in one room schools in both Washington and Tunbridge. On Aug. 12, 1938, she married
Lionel "Bill" Roberts of Chelsea. She helped her husband with his horse training and breeding business. They were married
for over 62 years. She loved flowers, traveling on Vermont roads and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
She was a former member of the United Church of Chelsea Service Guild.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Bonnie Kennedy and son-in-law Neil Kennedy; three grandchildren, Ryan, Michael and Robin Kennedy; a brother, Ernest Nichols; a sister, Amy Button, all of Chelsea; also nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Hilda Jane Roberts, who died in 1943; two brothers, Winfred and Dudley Nichols, and two sisters, Dorothy and Clara Nichols.
There were no calling hours. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the United Church of Chelsea with Rev. Brenda Howe officiating. A group of friends from H.E.B. Manufacturing was present. Reflections from Eleanor's daughter, Bonnie, were read by Rev. Howe. "For the Beauty of the Hearth, " "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden" were played by organist Dale Post. The pall bearers were George Button Jr., Steve Nichols, Stacey Gates and Ted Nichols.
The Church Service Guild hosted the fellowship in the church hall following the service. Burial will be held in the spring at the Highland cemetery in Chelsea.
