Cora DeLaBruere
Cora DeLaBruere, 81, after many years of living with Alzheimer’s disease, died peacefully on October 6, 2010, at her home in Derby with her family by her side.
Mrs. DeLaBruere was born March 29, 1929, in Norton. She was a daughter of the late Laurent Lavertue and Claudia (Brousseau) Noel.
She married
Gerard DeLaBruere on August 23, 1947. Mr. and Mrs. DeLaBruere worked together on their farms in West Charleston, East Burke and Newport Center. Upon retiring from farming, they settled in Westfield where they lived for over 26 years until they moved to their present home in Derby. Mr. DeLaBruere vigilantly cared for his wife for years at home to the end with the help of the Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice services, his family and friends.
Mrs. DeLaBruere was a strong woman of great faith. She was active in her church, in the Cursillo and Ultreya movements, and in her women’s group. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She somehow found time in her busy schedule on the farm and while raising a family to garden, sew, dabble in quilting, and make Christmas ornaments for her children and grandchildren.
Alzheimer’s may have taken her life, but her spirit lives on in the memories and hearts of the family she leaves behind.
Mrs. DeLaBruere is survived by Gerard, her husband of 63 years; by her children: Arlene and her husband, Daniel Fortin, of Derby Line, and their children Julie and Greg; by Suzanne and her husband, Deacon Malcom Zellner, of Daphne, Alabama, and their children Francis, Ashley, Rachael, Peter, and Stephen; by Daniel and his wife, Carol Lynn, of North Troy and their children Anthony, Matthew, Daniel and Stephanie; Lucille and her husband, Marvin Kupperblatt, of Morgan; Rose and her husband, Colonel Gaston Bathalon, of Maynard, Massachusetts, and their children Amanda, Emilie, Phillip, and Jeffrey; Andrew and his wife, Kathy, of Derby and their children Jessica, Rebecca and Joshua; Dennis and his wife, Aline, of Newport Center and their sons Jason, Bradley and Kevin; Peter of Methuen, Massachusetts, and his boys Dominic, Paul and Michael, Patricia and her husband, Don Carlos Davis, of South Burlington and their daughters Hilary and Tanya and Marie of Colchester and her son Issac. She also leaves over 20 great-grandchildren; her sister Jeannette and her husband, Michael McCoy, of Tucson, Arizona; many brothers- and sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. DeLaBruere was predeceased by two daughters Rachel and Anne; her great-grandson Jeremiah; and her sisters Doris Carrier, Louisa Marshall, and Marie Claudette Betterly.
Starting at 10 a.m., an hour of visitation will be held at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line on Saturday, October 16. It will be followed by the memorial service at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mrs. DeLaBruere’s name may be made to hospice at the Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, Inc., 46 Lakemont Road, Newport, Vermont 05855, or to IROC (Indoor Recreation of Orleans County), P.O. Box 558, Derby, Vermont 05829.
Final arrangements were done under the care and direction of the Reverend Kevin White of Green Mountain Direct Cremation Service.
Elwin (Winn) LaClair
Elwin (Winn) Rodolphe LaClair, 80, of Summerfield, Florida, died on October 1, 2010.
Mr. LaClair was born in Barton on December 29, 1929, and was the fifth child of the late Alfred and Maybell (Vallee) LaClair.
He grew up in Barton where he held various jobs. He moved to Massachusetts in the late 1960s and went to work for K.J. Quinn. He retired from Rohm Tech, formerly K.J. Quinn, in Malden, Massachusetts. He spent his retirement years in Summerfield.
Mr. LaClair loved building model cars, visiting family and friends and mowing lawns. He was an avid animal lover, and was often seen with his beloved dog Minnie by his side.
He is survived by his two daughters Brenda LaClair McEvoy and her husband, Christopher, of Methuen, Massachusetts, and Beth LaClair Mack and her husband, Hampton, of Bedford, New Hampshire; by four grandchildren: Patrick and Emily Lynch, Brittany Thomas, and Connor Bishop; by three brothers and their wives: Maurice LaClair of Barton, Earl LaClair and his wife, Margaret, of Barton, and Carroll LaClair and his wife, Doris, of Summerfield; by two sisters Dorothy Young of Tupper Lake, New York, and Alfreda Leonard of Newburyport, Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Nelson Leonard of Newburyport and Paul Young of Tupper Lake, and by a sister-in-law Jeanne LaClair of Barton.
Services will be held in the spring of 2011 in Barton.

Beverly Jean Marshall
Beverly Jean Marshall, 63, of Morgan died on October 5, 2010, at her home in Morgan surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 16, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia, a daughter of Tommy and Marcella (McCune) Bryson.
On September 4, 1965, she married
Brook Marshall who predeceased her on February 23, 1997.
She is survived by her children: Kristina Smith and her husband, Brian, of Bangor, Maine, Geri Stevens and her husband, Craig, of Derby, Becky Cubit and her husband, Marston, of Morgan, Shane Marshall and his wife, Amy, of Tennessee, Peter Marshall and his wife, Dawn, of Lyndonville, Elizabeth Bryant and her husband, Scott of Morgan, Laurie Johnson and her husband, Brian, of Bethel, and Bethanne Marshall of Milton; by over 40 grandchildren; by her mother, Marcella Faye Bryson, of Norfolk; two brothers, Thomas Ray Bryson and his wife, Ella, of California, and Robert Bryson of Norfolk; and by nine nieces and nephews; and five grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Tommy Bryson.
Mrs. Marshall was a loving, supportive grandmother. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She enjoyed playing games with her family and reading. Funeral services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Newport on October 9. Private interment followed at the Marshall family property in Morgan.

Louise E. Sargent
Louise E. Sargent, 89, of Derby died peacefully on October 10, 2010, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.
She was born on October 26, 1920, in North Troy, a daughter of George Arthur and Eva (Willey) Farnham.
On July 17, 1941, she married
Hugh Sargent who predeceased her in 1994.
She graduated in 1939 from the North Troy High School. She spent over 30 years in the Jay area and several years in Derby.
Mrs. Sargent was a member of the Derby Bible Baptist Church in Derby Line. She enjoyed sewing and knitting. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the recipients of many pairs of mittens over the years. She was also an excellent cook and loved to have the family come visit. She especially enjoyed family gatherings.
She is survived by her ten children: Wilma Therrien and her husband, Andre, of Newport Center, Jane Cardinal and her husband, Fred, of Georgia, Lance Sargent of Derby, Sandra Cousino and her husband, Frank, of Burlington, Larry Sargent and his wife, Lynn, of Tennessee, Bruce Sargent and his wife, Jeannette, of Newport Center, Janice Therrien and her husband, Marcel, of Derby, Merry LeJean and her husband, Dominique, of Milton, Edward Sargent and his wife, Michelle, of North Troy, and Lori Harrison and her husband, James, of Delaware; by her 34 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son Clark Jay Sargent in 1956 and by two grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 14, with the Reverend Richard Daniels officiating. Interment will follow at the Jay cemetery.

Eleanor Wilhemenia (Carlson) Walbert
Eleanor Wilhemenia (Carlson) Walbert, 86, of Coventry died peacefully on October 6, 2010, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.
Mrs. Walbert was born March 6, 1924, in Springfield, Massachusetts, a daughter of Oscar and Ida Carlson.
She had been a housewife, secretary, and worked in retail for many years. She was an active member of the American Legion, the Moose Club, and the Elks Club. She was also an active member of the Barton chapter of the Red Hat Society and was a longtime attendee at The Meeting Place in Newport.
She was married
to Theodore J. Walbert II for 54 years until he died in 2007.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Brown of Coventry; a son Theodore (Jay) Walbert III of Barton and his girlfriend, Jean Boyda; by three grandchildren: Meagan Brown of Colchester, Kaylan Brown of McLean, Virginia, and Ryan Brown of Coventry; a special friend, Jamie Rappaport, of Coventry; by her brother Walter Carlson and his wife, June, of Largo, Florida; her sister Evelyn Auchter of Wilbraham, Massachusetts; and her many nieces and nephews: Judi, Bob, Arlean, Russell, Cheryl, Tom, Barbara, Buzz, and their children.
A gathering in Mrs. Walbert’s honor was held in Coventry on October 9. Interment will be held at Hillcrest cemetery in Springfield at a date yet to be determined.

David “Beaner” Benjamin
David “Beaner” Benjamin, 23, of Morgan died suddenly on September 26, 2010, in Lebanon, New Hampshire.
He was born on March 14, 1987, in Beverly, Massachusetts, a son of Toni Benjamin.
Mr. Benjamin worked for Jack Degre Construction. He enjoyed almost any type of outdoor sports including four-wheeling, snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing. He was a happy-go-lucky guy who made friends easily. He was willing to lend a helping hand and easily brought a smile to those he came in contact with. He will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Toni Benjamin; his father, David Guillette, of Derby; his maternal grandfather Harold Benjamin Sr.; paternal grandmother Lucille Guillette; stepbrother Andrew Guillette; stepsister Amanda Guillette; by several aunts, uncles, cousins; and by his girlfiend, Cari Crawford. He is also survived by his dogs, Nikema, Burrus, and Baxter, and by a cat Zoey. He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Bettie “Nannie” Benjamin; his cousin Benjamin Martin; paternal grandfather John Guillette; uncle Jackie Guillette; and maternal great-grandparents Donald and Gwen Benjamin.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road in Newport where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 30, with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
Wayne "Woody" Brown
Woody Brown, 59, a lifelong resident of Wolcott, died in the loving care of his family and friends at his home on Tuesday, September 21.
Mr. Brown was born September 19, 1951, in Hardwick, a son of Philip Brown and the late Pauline Lamare Brown.
He married
Gina Mazzitelli on October 3, 1970, in Morrisville, and together they made their home in North Wolcott.
He was an equipment operator for many firms in the area and was a self-employed excavator operator, logger and did some carpentry. He had a passion for fishing, hunting, and a good game of poker. His family was his greatest accomplishment in life, and his grandsons always brought a smile to his face and put a twinkle in his eye. Unknowingly, he taught that nothing is more important in life than family and friends and how to take care of each other.
He leaves behind his wife, Gina; a son Shane and his wife, Tammy; grandsons Joshua and Matthew; his dad, Phil Brown, all of Wolcott; sisters Linda Willey of Wolcott, and her friend, Stan, and Beverly Chaffee and her husband, Sherm, of Barre; his father-in-law, Robert VanOrnum Sr. and his wife, Linda, of Ocala, Florida; sisters-in-law Lisa Mazzitelli of Barre and her fiancé, Charles Alfano, of Highland, New York, Marybeth Perry of Hardwick, Bonnie Van Ornum of Newark, New Jersey, and Ann Brown of Springfield; brother-in-law Bobby VanOrnum and his wife, Sharon, of Jericho; uncle and aunt Alan and Tweed Maskell of North Wolcott; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and other extended family.
He will be dearly missed by his "garage buddies.”
He was predeceased by his mother, Pauline Lamare Brown; a brother, Beanie Brown; mother-in-law Betty VanOrnum; sister-in-law Deborah Donaldson; and brother-in-law Dave Willey.
A memorial service was held on September 27 at the Lamoille Valley Church of the Nazarene in Johnson with the Reverend Al Lamos officiating.

Mary L. DeVries
Mary L. DeVries, a former resident of Barton, died in Brattleboro, on September 12, 2010, following a long illness.
She was born May 11, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, a daughter of James and Ruby Thomas Lott.
She graduated in 1945 from Fort Hamilton High School. That same year she married
Justus J. DeVries, her high school sweetheart.
In 1969, the DeVries family moved from Wilton, Connecticut, to Dorset. After her husband’s death in April 1976, Mrs. DeVries traveled widely. She lived in several towns across New England, including Barton from 1996 to 2002, before moving to Brattleboro in 2007.
Mrs. DeVries’ loving and supportive family includes her four children: Lou Nelsen of Dummerston; Nancy DeVries of Barton, Justus DeVries Jr. of the Middlebury area, and Andrew DeVries of Dorset; their respective spouses Paul Nelsen, Colin Nickerson, fiancée Lynn Heffelfinger, and Amy Thebault; grandchildren Corin Nelsen and his wife, Michaella Warryn, Jessie Nelsen and her husband, P.J. Nelson, Westley DeVries, Torin DeVries, Chelsea DeVries, Trevor DeVries, and Sawyer DeVries; her great-grandaughter Zoe Nelsen; her sister Elizabeth Donnellan; her brother James Lott Jr.; and her brother-in-law Roy DeVries. A sister Ruby Tucker predeceased her. Mrs. DeVries’ extended family includes many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was an enthusiast, a person who pursued her interests with zeal and vigor. Among her passions were hand weaving, quilting, long-distance bicycling, swimming, yoga, baking, and gardening. She belonged to the Dorset Garden Club, worked as a Hospice volunteer, a Girl Scout leader and deaconess. Her generosity towards her family and community extended to her support of many organizations, including the Long Trail School in Dorset, Hospice, Planned Parenthood, and various colleges and cultural organizations. She was a member of the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert.
The family celebrated Mrs. DeVries’ life at a memorial service at the United Church in Dorset on September 18.

Pauline E. MacLeod
Pauline E. MacLeod, 81, of Derby Line died on September 19, 2010, at her home in Derby Line.
She was born August 24, 1929, in Island Pond, a daughter of Romeo and Bernadine (Davis) Fortin.
On April 6, 1947, she married
Lawrence MacLeod who predeceased her on February 1, 2003.
Mrs. MacLeod is survived by her children: Linda MacLeod of Florida, Shirley Sumner and her husband, Bill, of Derby, Deborah Stratton and her husband, Wayne, of Stanstead, Quebec, and Scott MacLeod of Saratoga, New York; by 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one sister and one brother.
Funeral services were held on September 24 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Robert Castle officiating. Interment followed in Derby Center cemetery.

Joyce L. Sanford
Joyce L. (Perron) Sanford, 74, of Granby, Massachusetts, died at her home on Friday, September 3, 2010.
She was born in Glover, a daughter of Archie and Marie Ann (Grenier) Perron.
She graduated from Barton Academy in Barton. Mrs. Sanford worked in the cafeteria for the Granby School for 30 years.
She liked to play bingo and garden and go to Foxwoods. She was a former deaconess at the Church of Christ Conregational in Granby.
She was predeceased by five brothers: Robert, John, George, Armand, and Lionel; and one sister, Rita. She is survived by her husband, Reginald Sanford; her daughters Patricia Sullivan of Belchertown, Massachusetts; her grandchildren Linsey and Brett Sullivan; sisters Jackie Kennison and her husband, John, of Barton, and Maria Dickie of Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the Ryder Funeral Home in South Hadley, Massachusetts, followed by burial in West cemetery in Granby.
