Leo Joseph Parenteau

Leo Joseph Parenteau, 65, of Westmore died April 14, 2009, in Barton.
Mr. Parenteau was born November 19, 1943, in Barton, a son of Walter and Velma (Dopp) Parenteau.
He enjoyed riding in the car wearing his sunglasses, watching television, playing with and stacking his toys, and reading books. He especially enjoyed watching the staff and residents at Maple Lane Nursing Home.
Being born with Down syndrome, he was a very special person. He had unconditional love and touched many hearts of those who knew him.
He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Paul Parenteau and his wife, Diane, of Westmore, Claire Perkins and her husband, Roy, of Westmore, Brian Parenteau and his wife, Toi, of Westmore, Gerard Parenteau and his wife, Annette, of Westmore, Lorraine Hamel and her husband, Fred, of Brownington, and Theresa Kyhill and her husband, Steve, of Castleton; by a special aunt, Pauline Mitchem of Westmore, who since 1992 after the death of his mother gave him the loving care he needed; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Velma Parenteau.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton on April 20 with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed at Lakeview cemetery in Westmore.

Delphine D. Spaulding

Delphine D. Spaulding, 78, of Newport died April 17, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Spaulding was born May 2, 1931, in Coventry, a daughter of William and Delia (Crowe) Sanville.
She was employed by Indian Head Plywood for many years.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 Auxiliary of Newport. She enjoyed working and cooking.
She is survived by her son John Spaulding and his companion, Gail Parenteau, of Newport; by her grandchildren Corinna Lancaster and her husband, Royce, of Newport and Corey Spaulding and his wife, Nancy, of Derby; by great-grandchildren: Hannah, Mallory, Royce Jr., and Alex Lancaster and Kameron Spaulding; by stepgreat-grandchildren Jordan and Tara Spaulding; by her sister Silverine Wright of Newport Center; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and six sisters.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Rosalie E. Boutin-Aiken

Rosalie E. Boutin-Aiken, 61, of Newport died on August 1, 2009, in Newport.
Ms. Boutin-Aiken was born in Springfield, Vermont, on August 15, 1947, a daughter of Geneva and Louis Boutin, who predeceased her.
She loved karaoke, country music, and helping others. Ms. Boutin-Aiken had a heart of gold.
She was very devoted to her daughter, Lynn Daggett of Newport, who survives her. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Private Craig Daniels, who is serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Maryland, and Amanda Daggett of Newport. She also leaves behind two sisters: Waneta Tew of North Carolina and Linda Horn of Newport Center; her brother Raymond Boutin of Detroit, Michigan; very close friends Leona Glover of Island Pond, Glen Andrus of New York, Ray Marsh and his companion Erin of Newport Center, Marion Cole of Island Pond, and Joanne Diaz of Merrimack, New Hampshire.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6, at 2 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road, Newport with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. Interment will take place at the Lakeside cemetery in Island Pond at a later date.

Francis Enos Cheney Sr.

Francis Enos Cheney Sr., 84, of Newport died peacefully on July 29, 2009, at his home, with his loving family at his side.
Mr. Cheney was born March 5, 1925, in Newport, a son of Leo and Thelma (Morse) Cheney Sr.
On January 23, 1947, he married Jeannette Chilafoux, who predeceased him on January 9, 2005.
He entered the United States Navy on May 25, 1943, during World War II and was stationed on the USS Vincennes, USS Halford, and USS Castle Rock. He was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific, American Area Victory, and Philippine Liberty Medals. He was honorably discharged on May 4, 1946.
After the war, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for 42 years and retired as an engineer.
He loved trapping, hunting, fishing, playing golf, carpentry, cooking at the family cookouts, and especially playing pinochle with his brothers.
He held memberships with American Legion Post 21 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 798 of Newport.
He is survived by his children: Francis E. Cheney Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Newport, Linda Caron and her husband, Alfred, of Troy, Mary Poulin of Newport, Dana Cheney and his wife, Kathy, of Newport, Bonnie Stone of Irasburg, and Marie Cheney of Newport; by his grandchildren: Francis III, Christina, Jessica, Jordon, Lisa, Laurie, Joe, James, Tammy, Ryan, Angie, Dana, Joshua, Rodney, Rhonda, Tyra, Jaime, Brandy, Marc, and Michalea; by 30 great-grandchildren; by three great-great-grandchildren; by his sister Diane Renihan and her husband, David, of Jupiter, Florida; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Jeannette, he was predeceased by brothers: Leo, Walter, Edgar, Erwin, Donald, Robert, and Wayne Cheney; and by sisters: Barbara Warner, Donna Lontine, and Beverly Britch.
Funeral services were held in Newport on August 3 with the Reverend Michael Reardon officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Pine Grove cemetery in Newport.

Martha V. Choquette

Martha V. Choquette, 90, of Newport, a well-known and active businesswoman, died July 31, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Choquette was born September 27, 1918, in Stanstead, Quebec, a daughter of Frank and Ozema (Perra) Bessette.
On October 18, 1941, she married the love of her life, P. Conrad Choquette, who predeceased her in 1997. Mrs. Choquette was a legal secretary in Rock Island, Quebec, and a court interpreter for the Orleans County Court. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and former president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church and taught classes where she mentored young couples. She also enjoyed traveling to Florida.
She is survived by her children: Connie Sauter and her husband, Albert, of Mckinney, Texas, Paul Choquette and his wife, Jane, of West Palm Beach, Florida, Robert Choquette and his wife, Lori, of Springfield, Oregon; by her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Choquette of Tucson, Arizona; and by the following grandchildren: Thomas Choquette, Scott Sauter, Debbie Glasser, Marc Sauter, Julie Choquette, Katherine Blake, Jacqueline Gordon, Vicky Larson, Jill Cummings, and Beth Jackson; by 18 great-grandchildren; and by two sisters: Therese Perant of Montreal and Madeline Thompson of Magog, Quebec. She was predeceased by a son, Richard Choquette, in 2003, by a granddaughter, Andrea Choquette, in 1981, and by a great-grandson, Trace Morgan Jackson, in 2004.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Michael Reardon S.D.V. celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Interment followed in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Ruth Macy Savage

Ruth Macy Savage, 66, of Newport died peacefully on July 27, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Savage was born March 4, 1943, in Brockton, Massachusetts, a daughter of Joseph and Evelyn (Baxter) McKeown.
On June 11, 1970, she married Donald Savage Sr., who predeceased her on February 13, 2001.
She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and bingo, making crafts, and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Donald Savage Jr. and his companion, Susan Conn, of Jay, Linda Denomme and her fiancé, Robbie Cole, of Newport, and Thomas Savage and his partner, Brandon Wilson, of Newport; by five grandchildren: Alisha Taylor, Kassandra, Zachary, Donald Savage III, and Travis Cole; by her sisters: Shirley Ross and her husband, Walter, of Framingham, Massachusetts, twins Mary Holbrook and Marilyn Maraglia of Brockton, Pearl Pepin and her husband, Ernie, of Brockton, and Alice Seaver of Lexington, Kentucky; by numerous nieces and nephews; and especially by her pet parrot G.B. She was predeceased by her brother Sonny McKeown; and by sisters: Blanche Gilannclli, Beverly Maraglia, and Gladys Council.
Funeral services were held July 30 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Robert J. Blais

Robert J. Blais, 70, of Newport died on July 7, 2010, after a long illness.
He was born on July 23, 1939, in Derby Line, a son of Albert and Ida (Carignan) Blais.
He always lived in the area, and after working on the railroad for a few years he became a carpenter and stone mason, working for many different contractors in the area on several major buildings .
Mr. Blais liked music, especially playing the guitar and harmonica. He also loved to play cards with family and friends. He was state single’s cribbage champion in the mid 1970s and doubles champion with his brother Armand. He also enjoyed going to the family hunting camp in Holland. The deer population was never affected by their presence.
Mr. Blais is survived by his children: Shawn Blais and his wife, Heidi, of Washington, Keith Blais and his wife, Jennifer, of Kansas, Timothy Blais and his wife, Tammy of St. Albans, Regina Stockwell and her husband, Dan, of Texas, Diana Cole and her husband, Michael, of West Burke, Dawn Blake and her husband, Andre, of Barre, Tammy Blais of Oregon, and Tracy Lamarche and her husband, Andre, of Albany; by 18 grandchildren; by his brothers: Russell Blais and his wife, Lucienne, of Newport, Armand Blais and his wife, Pat, of Newport and Florida, Guy Blais of Connecticut, Romeo Blais and his wife, Mary Lou, of Newport; by his sisters: Gisele Kerner of Derby and Sister Carmen Blais of Littleton, New Hampshire; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Marcel Blais, and a sister, Rita.
Funeral services were held on July 10 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Derby Line where a Mass was celebrated. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family.

Jeannette Carr

Jeannette Carr, 69, of West Burke died peacefully on Monday, July 5, 2010, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by many family and friends.
Born on August 12, 1940, in Orleans, she was a daughter of Maurice and Lois Barry. She married Everett Red Carr. They later divorced.
She enjoyed gardening, fishing, and listening to fish stories, “visiting with Bob, ” playing dice, and watching nature shows. She loved all and any type of animal, especially cats. She was a night owl, bullshooter, and a turtle.
She is survived by four children: Mark Carr and his wife, Lynn, and their son Joshua of Chesapeake, Virginia; Gary Carr and his wife, Sherry, of Maine and Newark, and their children, Nicole Carr, Kristen Carr and Daniel Carr; Cheri and her husband, Steven K. Allard, of East Haven and their daughters, Julia Allard and Jennifer Allard; Maurice “Moe” Carr and his wife, Janice, of West Burke and their children, Jessica Carr of St. Johnsbury, Samantha Carr of Lyndon, Jordan Lund, Jasmine Lund, and McKayla Carr of West Burke; by three great-grandchildren: Jada Stevens, Caiden Stevens, and Brandi Carr; by siblings Robert Barry of York, Maine, Lillian Brown of Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, and Beverly Chapdelaine of Barton; by her cats Bobby-Dink, Mee-Mee, Bratrick; and Smudge; her dog, Wolfman Carr; by special and “adoptive” friends Al “Buford” Austin, Deb “Mable” Reichert, Sherry “Polly” Carr, Kevin “Ima” Reichert, Heloise Snark Esquire, Donna Gray, Tim Gilman, and many other friends and relatives too numenous to mention. A special thanks for the additional help and attention during her illness goes to Donna Gray, Sherry Carr, Deb Reichert, John Longe, and Ruth Allard. She was predeceased by ex-husband Everett Red Carr; by her parents, Lois Magoon Hennesey Barry and Maurice Barry; by siblings Lura Little, Dean Barry, Lloyd Barry, and by infant sister Jackie.
Calling hours were held at Pearsons Funeral Home on July 9.

Spc. Ryan J. Grady

Spc. Ryan J. Grady was killed in Afghanistan on Friday, July 2, 2010.
Mr. Grady was born May 30, 1985, in Marion, Kansas, a son of Deborah L. Bezdek and James A. Grady. In Vermont he attended North Country Union High School as a freshman and Lake Region Union High School as a sophomore. In 2003 he graduated from Thunderbird Military Academy in Oklahoma.
Mr. Grady immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army and began his active duty at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served the Army for three years and received a purple heart for being wounded in action. He later joined the Vermont National Guard and was deployed to Afghanistan in January of this year.
He is survived by his six-year-old daughter Alexis Joleen Quisenberry who lives in St. Johnsbury; his father, James A. Grady, of West Burke; his mother, Deborah L. Hudacek, of Bristow, Oklahoma; his two brothers and their wives: James and Lisa Grady of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Kevin and Sheli Grady of St. Johnsbury; a niece Selena Murphy; three nephews Dylan, Logan, and Joey Grady; and by aunts and uncles.
Visiting hours and funeral services will be held in St. Johnsbury at the North Congregational Church at 1325 Main Street.
Visiting hours will be Friday, July 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be an opportunity to file by his flag-draped casket and then extend condolences and support to his family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 17, at 10 a.m. Chaplain James MacIntyre III will officiate.
The funeral procession will proceed to Mt. Pleasant cemetery in St. Johnsbury where burial with military honors will follow at the Grady family lot.
