PAUL EMILE GAGNER
ST. ALBANS -- Paul Emile Gagner, age 84, affectionately known as "Chez Paul", died Tuesday evening, April 16, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care. He was born in Granby, Quebec Jan. 29, 1918, son of the late Jules and Rose Emma (Bessette) Gagner.
He served in the U.S. Army for a short period then Paul was the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1090 Steward for 16 years and then the proprietor of Chez Paul Restaurant, which later changed to a general store, but still under the name of Chez Paul, on Lake Street, St. Albans.
He retired in 1980 to enjoy his many hobbies. He spent many years camping with his family on Georgia Shore. Paul was an avid fisherman and gardener. He was an accomplished musician, leading his own band with the violin, guitar and many other instruments, for several years. He was a craftsman and enjoyed wood working tools. Paul was a communicant and usher at Holy Angels Church most of his life. He was a 63-year member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1090 and a 31-year member of the American Legion Post #1.
On April 26, 1943, he married Alice Gendron. Besides his wife, Alice, of almost 59 years, he is survived by their four children, Ronald Gagner of Swanton, Claudette and her husband Gilles Rainville of Georgia, Lise Gagner-Bovat and her husband Dan Bovat of Georgia, and Arlene and her husband Gary Thompson of Swanton; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Germaine and her husband Laurent Laroche of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Jeanne D'Arc Gagner of St. Albans; a brother-in-law, Paul Gendron of Sherbrooke, Quebec; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his siblings Armand, Sylvia, Cleopha, Joseph Gagner, Beatrice Therrien, Juliette Guiliette and twin sister Rachael Laroche.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Interment will be in the Gagner family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Highgate Center. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
FREDERICK G. BELLOWS
FAIRFAX -- Frederick Giddings Bellows, age 79, a lifelong resident of Fairfax, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, April 17, 2002.
He was born in Fairfax, Jan. 7, 1923, son of the late Herbert C. and Elizabeth (Giddings) Bellows. He was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax, Class of 1941. He served his country well as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a decorated veteran of WWII.
He married the love of his life, the former Bette Brewster, on June 7, 1947, in Cambridge.
Fred was a retired dairy farmer working part time over the years as a substitute Rural Route U.S. mail carrier and staff member of the then A.W. Rich Funeral Home. He was a member of the United Church of Fairfax and a dedicated volunteer always giving back to the town he loved so much as a past member of the BFA-Fairfax School Board and 50-plus-year member of the Lamoille Lodge #6 F&AM.
He was a kind, patient and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Fred always put others before him and was a loving, compassionate and committed caregiver for his wife, Bette Bellows, until her passing on Sept. 10, 2001. He was a true gentleman possessing a wonderful Vermont sense of humor and as a real native Vermonter he remained extremely modest about his wealth of wisdom and many talents so often shared with those friends and family in need. His passing will be a tremendous loss to the Fairfax community and all of those who had the true privilege to know and love him.
He is survived by two sons, Dale Bellows of Fairfax and James Bellows and his wife Leslie of Dorado, Puerto Rico; his daughter Patti Smith and her husband Michael of Fairfax; two brothers, Charles Bellows and his wife Barbara of Windsor, and Robert Bellows and his wife Margaret of Colonial Heights, Va.; two sisters, Joyce McCuin of Fairfax and T. Louise Counos and her husband William of St. Albans; a son-in-law James Ellsworth of Fairfax; his loving seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren who affectionately called him "Bump, " Kelley, Kimberly, Kathi, Lauri, Nathan, Jessica, Alison, Jared and Mara; and several nieces and nephews. Fred was also predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Leigh Ellsworth in July of 1992.
Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20, 2002, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the United Church of Fairfax on Sunday, April 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery in Fletcher.
Memorial contributions may be made in Fred's memory to the United Church of Fairfax, c/o Sally Sweet-Treasurer, 44 Sweet Slattery Road, East Fairfield, Vt. 05448.

HODES WINNER MOGELEVER
HOLLYWOOD, Fla./ST. ALBANS -- Hodes Winner Mogelever passed away in Hollywood, Fla. on April 14, 2002, from complications from Alzheimer's Disease. She was 86.
Mrs. Mogelever was born in St. Albans on May 4, 1915, to Julius and Rose (Brown) Winner. She attended St. Albans area school and graduated from Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans in 1933.
She moved to New Jersey during World War II and took a position as a dental assistant. She met and married Jacob Mogelever, editor for a New Jersey newspaper. During her marriage to Mr. Mogelever, she and her family traveled with him on his many trips to Hollywood, Calif., after he became an official in the U.S. Treasury Department, heading the Savings Bonds Division. She and her family met many Hollywood stars who were asked by Mr. Mogelever to promote the sales of savings bonds on TV in the 50s and 60s.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Jacob Winner, Louis Winner, and Jerry Winner; and sisters Edith Winner and Eva Winner Ferrulo.
She is survived by sisters, Sylvia Winner Grodzinsky of Swanton; Hilda Winner Harris of Seabrook, Texas, and Goldie Winner Weck of Atlanta, Ga.; her brothers Nathan Winner of Cathedral City, Calif., and Simon Winner of Pembrooke Pines, Fla.; her two daughters Bonnie Mogelever Pollack of Frederick, Md. and Naomi Mogelever Cantro of New Haven, Conn.; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
GEORGE H. KIDDER
SWANTON -- George H. Kidder, 46, died early Wednesday morning, April 17, 2002, in the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.
He was born in St. Albans, Aug. 31, 1955, the son of Wesley and Elvy (Hubbard) Kidder.
George retired from his employment in ice cream manufacturing with Ben & Jerry's, Inc. in April of 1995. Prior to his work at Ben & Jerry's, George worked in fabric manufacturing at Malden Mills from Jan. 1985 through Sept. 1990. George was also associated with Whitcomb's Furniture in Barre from 1983 - 1985, Blouin's IGA in 1982 and Wood & Kidder, Inc. from 1979 - 1982.
George was actively involved in the Missisquoi and Barre chapters of the Jaycees. He received numerous awards including the U.S. Jaycee of the Year Award by the Missisquoi Valley Jaycees in 1981-82, the John H. Armbruster Memorial Award in 1981-82 and the C. William Brownfield Memorial Award for Rookie of the year. In 1987 the United States Jaycees presented George with the highest honor naming him the 2, 047 U.S. Jaycees Ambassador and making him a lifetime member.
George is survived by two sons, John W. Kidder and Benjamin K. Kidder; his parents Wesley F. and Elvy H. Kidder; a brother Stephen H. Kidder and his wife, Marian; and a sister, Linda J. Kidder and her husband, Patrick White. George also leaves several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 20, 2002, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. The pastor, Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Kidder family lot in Riverside Cemetery. LORETTA AMANDA CRYSTALL
ST. ALBANS/SHELDON -- Loretta Amanda Crystall, 87, a resident of this area since 1993, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at her daughter's home in Sheldon.
Her loving family was at her side. She was born in New Bedford, Mass., Oct. 10, 1914, the daughter of the late John and Azelia (Gogauin) Noble. Her first husband, Vincent Munn, died in 1976, and her second husband, Stanley Crystall, died in 1984.
Prior to moving to Vermont, she lived in Yonkers, N.Y. for 20 years and Naugatuck, Conn. for five years. In St. Albans, she lived at 251 Lake St. She was a communicant of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Yonkers.
Loretta enjoyed dancing, crafts and bingo, and her trips to Atlantic City. She was a Lady Elk in Florida and a member of the Franklin County Senior Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Joan Loretta Munn of Willingboro, N.J. and Nancy Munn and her dear friend, Mark French of Sheldon. She also leaves a sister, Bertha Palazzo of Titusville, Fla.; a favorite niece, Lorraine Voigt of Bronx, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Dominic and Stephen Falcone, Rachael Birns, James and Kathryn Manning; two great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Sean Falcone; two step-grandchildren, Kelsey and Bryan French; nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by a daughter, Alice Meisner; three sisters, Beatrice Maly, Norma Woodward and Yvonne Noble; and a brother, Peter Rock.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 19, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sheldon Springs with the pastor, Father Bernard Bechard, as celebrant. Interment will be in the family lot in Gates of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.. There will be no public visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may me made to The Hospice Program of The Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478 Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
JUDSON N. DECKER
ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Judson N. Decker, age 82, died April 16, 2002 in the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born Jan. 26, 1920 to the late Reuben and Charlotte (Carr) Decker.
Judson received his early schooling in a one-room schoolhouse in Georgia. In 1939, he graduated from BFA-St. Albans and went to work for the Central Vermont Railroad.
In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He did his basic training at Fort Devens in Massachusetts. In 1943 he was shipped out to Dakkar in West Africa. There he remained for 16 months where he served in the DEML. On furlough he visited the Holy Land and Egypt, experiences that stayed with him throughout his life and led to many good "stories". He was sent back home when he contracted malaria.
In 1945, he met and married the love of his life, Margaret Butler. They were married for 52 years. She died in 1998.
Mr. Decker was a member of the American Legion and past Commander of Green Mountain Post #1. During his terms as post and county Commander, 1978-79, the post enjoyed the highest membership since it's inception. He was also a member of the VFW and the 40 & 8th.
Survivors includes his daughters, Joan Massey and her husband Wayne of Salem, Ore., and Mary Ellen Stanley and her husband Kevin of St. Albans. Peggy Metcalf and her husband Brian, is the grandchild that he and Margaret raised, and she was instrumental in handling his care in the last years of his life. She is truly his youngest "daughter".
Other grandchildren include Ric Plamondon of Northridge, Calif., and Scott Plamondon of Cupertino, Calif., and Kaitlin Stanley of St. Albans is his youngest granddaughter. Mr. Decker has two great-grandchildren. They are Elijah Plamondon of Northridge, Calif., and Carly Boyd of Simi Valley, Calif. Also surviving is his brother Winfred and nephew, Newell Decker of St. Albans.
Pam Witham and Jessie Firkey were the aides who cared for him so that he could remain in his own home where he had lived since 1945. They were truly angels and became as dear as family members.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Interment will follow with full military honors in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
LUCILLE NANCY MARTIN
RUTLAND/ENOSBURG FALLS -- Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Reverend Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Altar server was Leonard Charron, organist was Fredda Ploof. The casket pall was placed on Mrs. Martin's casket by her nephew, William Harvey, and nieces Elizabeth Matte and Susan Lavigne. Readings were done by William Harvey and the offertory gifts were presented by Elizabeth Matte and Susan Lavigne. Burial followed at the Missisquoi Cemetery in Enosburg Falls. Bearers were Dan and Robert Harvey, John Lavigne and Robert Reil.
Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls was in charge of arrangements.
