Arland A. Butler
Arland A. Butler, 87, a lifelong area resident and businessman, died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at his home in Barton in the loving care of his five daughters and family.
He was born in Irasburg, October 28, 1922, a son of Arthur W. and Glenna (Huntington) Butler. He attended graded school in a one-room school on Burton Hill in Irasburg.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January of 1943 and served in the European theater during World War II in the cavalry until his discharge in February 1946. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #798 in Newport; the American Legion Post #76 in Barton; and Post #23 in Orleans.
Mr. Butler married
Janice King on June 8, 1946, and together they raised five daughters in Irasburg and Barton.
He was always very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was a lifetime farmer, logger, maple producer, and schoolbus driver. With his wife, Janice, he established Butler's Bus Service in 1967, which he operated until his retirement.
He was a well-known local bobcat, racoon and bear hunter, having also been a founding member of the Lyndon Cat and Coon Club. He was also a past president of the Orleans Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid sportsman, having played town team baseball with his brothers and his father during the 1940s and early 1950s. He also enjoyed a good game of cards. He was a cribbage player and was well known for his perfect hand in cribbage on June 25, 1995.
Mr. Butler was a lifetime member of the Orleans Lions Club, and the Elks Lodge #2155 in Derby. He also was a member of the Irasburg Lodge #62 and Barton Lodge #55 of the Masonic Temple, F&AM. He was a respected member of his community, being the recipient of the 2007 Community Service Award from the Community National Bank.
He leaves his five daughters and their husbands: Linda B. Choquette and Dennis of Glover; Barbara Smith-Shafer and Brent of Irasburg, Brenda Smith and Smitty of Wheelock, Dee-Dee Collette and Mark of Orleans, and Sheila Butler-Kepler and Sandy of West Glover; 11 grandchildren: Carole Briere and her husband,
Scott, Tracie Stevens, Aaron Smith and his wife, Janet, Cristopher Butler-Smith and his wife, Shelley, Cory Smith and his friend, Missy Fontain, Atti Sequin, Eri Sequin, Tessa Collette and her friend, Shane Bluto, Sam Collette and his friend, Rachel Miltner, James Arland Kepler, Schuyler Kepler, and an honorary grandson, Erik Smith; eight great-grandchildren: Oakley Stevens, Kristen and Erin Smith, Joshua, Jordan, and Katelynn Briere, MaKenzie and Bronson Arland Smith; a special friend, Judy Currier; and Cheyenne, his loyal canine companion. He also leaves his siblings: Bernard Butler of Barton; Florence Tillinghast and her husband, George, of York, Pennsylvania; Pauline Fernandez and her husband, Pepé, of White Sulfer Springs, West Virginia; Francis Butler and his wife, Phylis, of Hardwick, Massachusetts; and a brother-in-law, Donald King and his wife, Hariett, of West Glover. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Janice, in 2001; by his parents, Arthur and Glenna Butler; and by siblings Beatrice Kittredge, Stanley Butler, Shirley Smith, Annette Lapierre, and Fay W. Butler.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, at the West Glover Congregational Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Butler’s eight grandsons.

Rose Irene Choiniere
Rose Irene Choiniere, 56, of Barton, died peacefully Tuesday night, June 15, 2010.
She was born on September 10, 1953, in Middlebury, a daughter of Wilamina Marie Blanche (Guinard) (Cousino) Clark and Lawrence Joseph Cousino.
On April 19, 1986, she married
Louis Joseph Choiniere. They established a small family dairy farm together in Barton, where they raised three children. Along with being a full-time, stay-at-home mom, she occupied herself with paralegal work and opening her own catering service. She enjoyed doing things that made a difference in people’s lives.
She was known by many, but only a few really knew her. She was always there with a smile and advice on what to do to solve life’s problems. She loved to talk to anyone and everyone, and all she wanted was to be remembered for what that she has said and done. She enjoyed helping anyone whether they needed it or not, in whatever way that she could. She was a wonderful and devoted mother, grandmother, and wife, who appreciated everyone for who they were and wanted the best for everyone.
She is survived by her loving husband, Louis Joseph Choiniere, of Barton; her son Joshua Luke Choiniere of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two daughters, Jessie Choiniere of Lyndonville and Tiffany Choiniere of St. Johnsbury; two grandchildren, Gabrielle Rose Choiniere and Lily Isabelle O’Kalani Choiniere; two brothers, Bruce L. Cousino and his wife, Toni, of San Bernardino, California, and Leo E. Cousino of Monkton; two sisters, Bernadette (Cousino) Cason and her husband, Donald, of Seffner, Florida, and Lorraine (Cousino) Perry of Williston; one niece; four nephews, several cousins, aunts and uncles.
She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence J. Cousino and Marie (Guinard)(Cousino) Clark, paternal grandparents Felix and Delia Cousino, and maternal grandparents Eleanor and Joseph Guinard.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton on June 22 with Father Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass.

Esther Marie Flory
Esther Marie Flory, 92, died at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton on June 14, 2010.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, on March 3, 1918, Mrs. Flory graduated from the University of Chicago School of Nursing, then served in World War II as a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Nurses.
She met and married
Albert Flory Sr. in New Orleans, Louisiana, prior to embarking for service in the European theater. After the war, the couple returned to Vermont.
Mrs. Flory worked part-time as an ICU nurse at North Country Hospital. She worked tirelessly for the Newport Hospital Auxiliary, and the Vermont Chapter of the American Heart Association. She was also a member of the Fortnightly Women's Club and the Newport Country Club. She was the happiest when enjoying her family, being of service to others, enjoying the natural beauty of the state, gardening, and playing the piano.
Mrs. Flory was predeceased by her parents, three sisters, and a brother. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Albert Flory Sr.; by her children: Albert Flory Jr. of Hanover, New Hampshire, Ann Marie Flory of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Haidee Flory of Westminster, Colorado, and Sally Field of Telluride, Colorado; and by five grandchildren.
A Mass was held at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Newport on June 21. Interment followed at St. Mary's cemetery in Fair Haven.

Melissa K. Jewett
Melissa K. Jewett, 43, beloved daughter of Theodore and Mina Jewett of Burlington, died in Burlington on Thursday, June 17, 2010.
She was born on October 6, 1966, in Newport, a daughter of Ted and Mina (Carter) Jewett.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed outdoor sports, loved being around her nieces and nephews, and delighted in teaching her students in the third grade at South Burlington Central School for many years.
Ms. Jewett graduated from Moorestown High School in Moorestown, New Jersey, in 1984 after attending elementary school in Derby. She also attended the University of Vermont and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education in 1990 and a master’s degree in education, curriculum, and instruction in 1995.
She endured a 30-year struggle with type 1 diabetes with many complications. She volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and was a past member of the board of directors of the Stearns Center for Language and Learning, as well as a member of the state Education Standard Board.
She is survived by her parents; by brothers Matthew Jewett and his wife, Jacquelyn, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, and Brian Jewett of South Burlington; by a niece Elizabeth; by nephews Timothy and Cyrus Jewett; several aunts and uncles; by her grandmother Dorothy Carter; grandfather Bert Jewett and his wife; Ann. She was predeceased by her grandfather Melvin Carter and grandparents Reginald and Elizabeth Sherman.
Funeral services were scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Second Street in Newport with the Reverend Rollin Norris officiating. Interment was scheduled to follow in the Pine Hill cemetery in Derby.

Leonora (Lee) Mordhorst
Leanora (Lee) Mordhorst died peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2010. She was 87 years old.
Mrs. Mordhorst, who was born May 22, 1923, in Baldwin, New York, moved to Woodstock with her husband, Bob, in 1962. In 1976, they moved to Florida. She returned to Woodstock in 1996 after her husband’s death to be near her daughters. In 2008 she became a resident of the assisted living facility at Historic Homes of Runnemede in Windsor.
She is survived by four children: Robert and his wife, Lila, of Baltimore, Maryland, Roy and his wife, Judy, of Salem, South Carolina, Diane Rowlee and her husband, Harold, of Holland, and Kathryn Tracy and her husband, Carl, of Grantham, New Hampshire; by seven grandchildren; and by five great-grandchildren. Three sisters pre-deceased her.
Mrs. Mordhorst was a devoted and loving mother and homemaker. She acted as bookkeeper for her husband’s electrical contracting businesses in Long Island, New York and later in Woodstock.
She loved to garden, dance, bowl, play cards, and golf, and was known for her fastidious housekeeping. She was involved in her children’s lives, serving as a Scout leader, PTA officer, and in many other capacities. Through the years, she worked as a telephone operator, hospital aide, dental receptionist, office manager and real estate broker.

Isabelle Catherine Roberts
Isabelle Catherine Roberts, 92, died on June 16, 2010, in Newport.
She was born November 24, 1917, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Theron Willard, of Derby, and her mother, Bridgett Clarke Willard, of Boston, returned to Vermont when Mrs. Roberts was four months old, and she grew up on the family farm in Derby. She graduated from Derby Academy in 1936.
On December 23, 1938, she married
Dwight Roberts, who predeceased her in 1996 after 57 years of marriage. They made their home in Orleans for many years.
Mrs. Roberts helped organize the Ethan Allen Credit Union in the early 1960s and became its first treasurer. She was a member of the Orleans Federated Church. Lifelong friendships were formed when she joined the Sew-Cro-Knit Christmas Club. Hobbies included flower gardening, knitting, quilting, and bowling. She enjoyed birdwatching, her cats, and staying on top of current politics. She was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Red Sox.
She is survived by her children: Rod Roberts of Sarasota, Florida, and Mona Gadwah and son-in-law Larry of Torrington, Connecticut; by grandchildren: Shayne Roberts and Quinn Roberts of Florida, and Chris Gadwah of Connecticut; three great-grandchildren: Nathan, Abbey, and Jack Roberts; a brother, Anson Willard of Newport; and a sister, Gertrude Whitehill of Kirby, with whom Isabelle lived before moving to Bel-Aire assisted living. She also leaves behind the following nieces and nephews: Loraine Limlaw, Scott Willard, Lisa Burke, Donna Whitehill, Cheryl McMahon, Bradley Whitehill, Helen Bicknell, Wayne Willard, Janice Sayers, Carol McGivern, Sharon Palmer, and Keenan Roberts, all of whom were very special to her throughout her life.
Mrs. Roberts was predeceased by grandson Bryce Roberts; by brothers Gordon Willard and Stanley Willard; a sister, Helen, at age 15; and by nephews Gary Whitehill and Duane Willard.
A graveside service was held on June 21 at 11 a.m at Pleasantview cemetery in Orleans with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating.

Karl G. Smith
Karl G. Smith, 85, a resident of Albany, died Friday, June 18, 2010, at North Country Hospital in Newport.
He was born in Morgan, March 2, 1925, a son of Charles H. and Florence L. (Sykes) Smith.
He attended Orleans High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married
Jeanette Fecteau on April 3, 1947, in Windsor.
He was a lab assistant in a Harvard and U.S. government owned research lab for several years. He later returned to Vermont where he owned and operated a dairy farm in Charleston until his retirement. In 1983, he and his wife moved to their home in Albany where they operated the Barn Door, a gift and discount store, for ten years.
Mr. Smith raised registered sheltie dogs and enjoyed gardening both vegetables and flowers.
He leaves his wife of Albany; a daughter, Karen Hedges and her husband, Daniel, of East Charleston; three grandchildren: Robert Brooks, Michael Brooks, and Brett Hedges; four great-grandchildren: Carter Brooks, Melina Brooks, Ty Brooks, and Courtney Rivers; and a great-great-granddaughter, Gracie Jean Martin. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents; by five brothers: Warren, Robert, Charles, George, and Rodney Smith; and by four sisters: Jessie Scott, Agnes Murray, Gail Campbell, and Becky Weber.

Rena St. Pierre
Rena M. St. Pierre, 81, of Brownington Center died peacefully on June 14, 2010, in Glover.
She was born October 4, 1928, in Brownington, a daughter of Albert and Mary (Niquette) St. Pierre.
Ms. St. Pierre enjoyed having company, reading, flowers, birds, TV soap operas, hand drawing, needlework, and listening to all music, especially country and harp music.
She was a resident of Brownington most of her life.
She spent her younger years caring for other people’s children and their homes in the Newport area.
After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Ms. St. Pierre spent her time being as caring, helpful, and useful as possible to others. She loved life, children, and all of nature, birds, and animals.
She was grateful for the home health care she received while living alone at home in Brownington Center. When it became necessary, she reluctantly left her home to become a resident at the Union House Nursing Home in Glover. There despite her suffering, she was cheerful and likeable, participating in the activities provided and very thankful for the wonderful care she received and the warm friendships she found.
Ms. St. Pierre was predeceased by her parents; her sister Eva Young; a brother, Delphis St. Pierre; a younger sister, Anita Bergeron; and a niece, Dorothy Young Broe. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Eva Young’s children: Marie Viens of Uncasville, Connecticut, Alfred Young of West Charleston, Shirley Perry of Brownington, John Young of Barton, Albert Young of Lyndonville, Wilfred Young Jr. of Brownington, Richard Young of Florida, Robert Young of Orleans, Don Young of Evansville, Sharon Faust of Brownington, and Leon Young of Barton; and by numerous grand, great-grand, and great-great-grand nieces and nephews; by her sister Anita Bergeron’s children: Paul Bergeron and his children and grandchildren, and Wayne Bergeron and his children.
Funeral services were held on June 18 at St. Theresa’s Church in Orleans with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass.
Claire T. Audet
Claire T. Audet, 81, of Troy, died May 19, 2010, in Newport.
She was born March 23, 1929, in Martinville, Quebec, a daughter of Ovide and Blanche (Tetreault) Cote.
On September 27, 1947, she married
Maurice Audet, who survives her.
Mrs. Audet was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Troy and a lifetime member of Notre Dame de Cape in Quebec.
She enjoyed knitting, gardening, spending time with her family, and playing bingo and cards.
She is survived by five children: Noella Berthiaume and her husband, Richard, of North Troy, Roger Audet and Rita of Westfield, Diane Roberts and her husband, Andre, of Huntington, Carmen Bouchard and her husband, Jacques, of Troy, and Rejean Audet and his wife, Rebecca, of Exeter, New Hampshire; by her grandchildren: Jean Berthiaume, Robert Berthiaume, Denis Berthiaume, Victoria Prue, Jennifer Zelco, Roger Audet Jr., Jessica Roberts, Patrick Roberts, Johanna Demers, Nicholas Bouchard, Jonathan (Bobby) Bouchard, and Claire Audet; by 16 great-grandchildren; by her brothers and sisters: Nil Cote of Grandby, Massachusetts, Hugette Laplante of Rock Forest, Quebec, Marie Paul Fauteux of St. Ezedor, Quebec, Real Cote of Martinville, Quebec, Andre Cote of Grandby, Massachusetts, Monique Cote of Sherbrooke, Quebec; her sisters-in-law: Donalda Fontaine of Derby, and Yvette Lantot of Hamden, Massachusetts, and by a brother-in-law, Gilles Audet of Sherbrooke; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Aline Chaput, and by a brother, Yvon Cote.
Funeral services were held on May 24 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Troy with the Reverend Roger Charbonneau celebrating a Mass. Interment followed in St. Ignatius cemetery in Lowell.
