Pearl Madeline Gooley
Pearl Madeline Gooley, 92, of Newport Center died September 12, 2009 at home.
Mrs. Gooley was born June 30, 1917, in Colebrook, New Hampshire, a daughter of Leroy and Mariette (Hodge) Henson.
On September 11, 1948, she married
Russell Gooley, who predeceased her on July 25, 1991.
She was a florist and owner of the former Maple Valley Flower Shop, and she owned the former Horseshoe Restaurant in Newport Center. She was a cook at one time at the Jay Village Inn.
Her interests were braiding and hooking rugs and working in her flower and vegetable gardens.
She was a member of the Modern 49ers and 50-year member of the Women’s Christian Society of the United Methodist Church in Newport Center. She also taught 4-H at her home.
She is survived by two children, Wayne Gooley and his wife, Becky, of Troy and Mary Lynne Hunter and her husband, Henry III, of Eddington, Maine; by three grandchildren: Bobby Jo Rivard and her husband, Todd, of Newport, Tracy Gooley of Newport Center, and Henry J. Hunter IV of Eddington; by two great-grandchildren, Brandon Wells and Morgan Rivard; by one brother and one sister, Everett Henson and his wife, Lois, of North Haverhill, New Hampshire, and Nell Henson of Colebrook, New Hampshire; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings: Willard Henson, Evelyn Lewis, Millie Stewart, Richard Henson, Howard Henson, Edith Henson, and Rena Henson.
A memorial service was held September 21 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Richard O’Hara officiating. Interment followed in the Newport Center cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Gooley’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.

Sara A. Larabee
Sara A. Larabee, 96, of Barton died September 19, 2009, in Lyndonville.
Mrs. Larabee was born March 21, 1913, in Albany, a daughter of Harry and Winefred (Hyde) Duckless.
On September 27, 1932, she married
Alvin Larabee, who predeceased her in 1966.
She was a former 25-year member of Maple Valley Grange in Albany.
She enjoyed farming and gardening, and she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Vernon Larabee and his wife, Lauri, of Lyndon, Vernal Larabee and his wife, Luciene, of Albany, and Sally Bedard and her husband, John, of Albany; by her son-in-law Neil Goodwin of St. Johnsbury Center; by 12 grandchildren; by 27 great-grandchildren; and by numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Vernice; by one brother; and by six sisters.
Graveside services were held September 22 at the Albany Village cemetery with the Reverend David Lisner officiating.

George C. Birdsall
George C. Birdsall, 66, of Newport Center died peacefully in his home on Friday, July 24, 2009.
Mr. Birdsall was born November 27, 1942, in Bridgeton, New Jersey, a son of George E. and Lucy (Pearce) Birdsall.
On April 20, 1968, he married
Judi Long, who predeceased him in 2005 after 37 years of marriage.
He was a computer technician for Bell Atlantic Telephone Company with 27 years service. He retired in 1992. He moved to Vermont in 1992 and worked for Northern State Correctional Facility for several years until he retired in 2005.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and served in active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of American Legion Post 28 of North Troy.
He is survived by his children Leisa Powers and her husband, Mark, of Greenwich, New Jersey, and Marnie Willis and her husband, Rob, of Newport Center; by three grandchildren: Jeremy and Colin Powers and Yvan Willis; by his mother, Lucy K. Birdsall, of Bridgeton; and by his brother Neil Birdsall of Ocean City, New Jersey. He was predeceased by his father, George E. Birdsall.
A graveside service was held July 28 at the Westfield cemetery with the Reverend Henry Mlinganisa officiating.

William “Bill” Emerson Grant
William “Bill” Emerson Grant, 87, of Wantagh, New York, died July 23, 2009, in Newport.
Mr. Grant was born December 15, 1921, a son of Jay Pittman and Helma (Jensen) Grant in Jersey City, New Jersey.
He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill stationed in the Pacific Ocean. He was discharged in 1947.
He married
Lois Moss on July 2, 1948, and they were happily married
for 61 years. His wife predeceased him on April 18.
They made their home in Wantagh, where they raised two children, Keith and Patti. Mr. Grant made his living as a plant supervisor for an injection molding company, while Mrs. Grant taught kindergarten in Copiague schools.
They were charter members of the Levittown Community Church in New York and remained active members throughout their lives.
Mr. Grant began spending summers in Westmore when he was a young boy, and he worked at the Willoughvale Farm when it was a working farm in the 1930s. When he married
Lois, they began a lifelong tradition of spending vacations at Lake Willoughby after stopping at Taylor’s Cabins on their way home from their Canadian honeymoon. He and his family spent time at the Willoughvale, Green Acres, Fosters Grove, and finally with the Lukas in Brownington. He was a member of Orleans Country Club for many years. He found great pleasure in the wildlife that Vermont had to offer, especially feeding the birds and chipmunks.
He is survived by his two children, Keith Grant and his wife, Charlotte, and Patti Lukas and her husband, Gary; by seven grandchildren: Kevin Grant and his fiancée, Diana, Thomas Grant and his wife, Calista, Colleen Grant, Nicholas Carrillo and his wife, Meredith, Shaun Carrillo and his fiancée, Valerie, Christopher Lukas and Randy Lukas; and by great-grandson Trevor Grant.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at a later date at Levittown Community Church.
Gary Richard Sheltra
Gary Richard Sheltra, 61, died peacefully at his home in North Troy, surrounded by his family and close friends, after a courageous battle with cancer, on July 20, 2009.
Mr. Sheltra was born December 16, 1947, in Westfield, a son of Forrest Sheltra and Lillian (Pope) Baraw.
He was raised in Orleans. He worked on a mink farm as a boy. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and fought in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969. He was discharged with honors.
He became a maintenance man and worked at the Kraft/Agri-Mark cheese plant for many, many years. He also worked at Columbia Forest Products, and most recently he was working full time at Jay Peak Ski Resort. He will be missed by all his close friends at Jay Peak.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and his dog James. He loved camping, getting away, working on cars, and fixing stuff. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix.
He leaves behind his wife and best friend, Carol Sheltra. He is also survived by two brothers, Tim Baraw of Newport and Steve Baraw of Westfield; by four sisters: Jackie Arel and her husband, Chuck, of Vergennes, Judy Drown of Randolph, Sherryl Sheltra of Newport, and Penny Coe and her husband, Garry, of Newport Center; by five children: Shelley and his wife, Kathy, of Newport Center, Scott and his partner, Melissa, of Troy, Barbara of Newport, and twin sons, Nicholas and Nathan (Sheltra) Burleigh of Windsor; by stepchildren: Michael Stacey and his wife, Natalie, of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Jennifer Messier of Newport, April Stacey and her partner, Todd Daigle, of Westfield, and Kevin Stacey and his wife, Becky, of Morrisville. Through his loving and blended family he leaves behind 16 grandchildren: Justin, Nicholas, Joey, Brianna, Lindsey, Aaron, Nadine, Ashley, Ryan, Cassie, Dillon, Xander, Quinton, Zoey, Travis, and Alexis.
A graveside service was held July 24 at the North Hill cemetery in Westfield with Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Calvin Kemp officiating with full military honors.

Beatrice Blanchard Spencer
Beatrice Blanchard Spencer, 71, of Abercorn, Quebec, died July 22, 2009, in Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins Hospital in Cowansville, Quebec.
Mrs. Spencer was born May 20, 1938, in Newport Center, a daughter of William and Augusta (Peters) Blanchard.
She is survived by her daughter Teala Morse and her husband, Reggie, of Abercorn; by her two grandchildren, Michael and Mathew Morse; by her sister Pauline Sweet of Enosburg; by two brothers, Roland Blanchard and his wife, Shirley, of Newport Center and Steve Blanchard of Enosburg; by her nieces and nephews; by her former husband and friend Roy Spencer of Sutton, Quebec; and by other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her twin sister, Barbara Gerrow, on June 26.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 1, at the Albany cemetery with the Reverend Nathan Strong officiating.

Richard I. Campbell
Richard I. Campbell, 87, of Derby died peacefully on April 27, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 29, 1922, in Granville, a son of Clyde and Bessie ( Manning) Campbell.
On January 19, 1972, he married
Lorinda Yantz who survives him.
He entered the U.S. Navy where he was on the USS Enterprise and served during WWII in the Pacific Theater as a radar operator.
He enjoyed working with farm animals and retired as a dairy farmer from Routhier Farms in Bloomfield.
He is survived by his wife, Lorinda Campbell, of Derby; his son Matthew Campbell and his companion, Kim Roberge of Newport Center; by his granddaughter, Liza Campbell; by several nieces and nephews; and by his three dogs, three cats, and two birds. He was predeceased by a brother and three sisters.

James Charles Carpenter
James Charles Carpenter Sr., 77, of Newport died April 24, 2010, in Zepherhills, Florida.
He was born November 28, 1932, in Derby, a son of Charles and Winifred (Lemere) Carpenter.
On September 12, 1953, he married
Sfa Flynn who predeceased him on September 16, 2005.
Mr. Carpenter was a dairy farmer and a truck driver for the former W.S. Mitchell. He held memberships with the Benevolent Order of the Elks #2155 where he was a life member, and he was also a former member of the Grange. He enjoyed camping.
He is survived by his children: Steve Carpenter of Derby, Ken Carpenter and his wife, Paula, of St. Johnsbury, Sally Carpenter of East Bolton, and James Carpenter Jr. of Lake Worth, Florida; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers: Harold Carpenter and his wife, Lucille, of Dover, New Hampshire, Dale Carpenter and his wife, Sandra, of West Charleston, and Reginald Carpenter and his wife, Linda, of North Troy; his sisters-in-law Lois Carpenter of Derby and Diana Emmerson and her husband, Ernie, of Holland; brother-in-law David Flynn of Derby; his mother-in-law, Ruby Flynn, of Holland; and by his special friend, Sharon Jacobs of Newport. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Carpenter Jr.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Derby Center cemetery with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Michael Todd Cole
Michael Todd Cole, 44, beloved father, son, brother and friend to many, died on April 27, 2010, in Jericho.
He was born October 17, 1965, in Newport, a son of Lynda (Buchanan) Cole and the late Everett Cole.
He fought a valiant and courageous battle with cancer for over a year. He did not give in and just lie on the couch but he got up and went nearly every day he could. His miracle was that he had this inner strength to do things his way.
He graduated from North Country Union High School in 1983 and went to work for his dad at Cole and Webster, Inc., for many years. For a short time he had his own used car business. Then he worked at DeLabruere Auto Sales, and more recently he was employed by Courtesy car dealership.
Mr. Cole was predeceased by his father, Everett “Mike” Cole in 2007. He is survived by his sons, Joshua and Anthony, and their mother, Rhonda; by his mother, Lynda Cole, of Derby; his brother Tim Cole and his wife, Tina, of Jericho; his sisters Connie Montague and her husband, David, of Charleston, Gayla Gosselin and her husband, Dan, of Derby, and Tracey Poulin and her husband, Jeff, of Derby; by special nieces and nephews: Cole, Jennifer, Ashley, Lauren, Chad, Roger, Jake, Alyssa, Samantha, ZaKary and their families and partners; and by many many friends.
Funeral services were held on May 3 at the Church of God in Derby with the Reverend Laurence Wall officiating. In accordance with Mike’s wishes that his son Anthony receive a college education, and that he had been planning to help him reach his goal, a college fund has been established in Mr. Cole’s memory for Anthony Cole in care of Community National Bank, P.O. Box 259, Derby, Vermont 05829.
