DOUGLAS CRAIG McCORMICK
MORRISVILLE -- Criag McCormick died unexpectedly on March 1, 2002.
Craig was born on March 5, 1970, in St. Albans. He was the son of Beverly and Tom McCormick and the brother of Michael of Vienna, Va. He had many happy memories from the years with his family and much gratitude for their love and care. He had a very special relationship with his grandparents, Edwin and Marie Rague, and with his Uncle Skip.
Craig graduated with honors from McLean High School in Virginia, studied at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va., and served in the U.S. Air Force where he had been recommended for officer training. He belonged to a 12-Step Program and made numerous friends across the country from that affiliation.
Last year, using the trail name "the General" (after Ulysses S. Grant), Craig hiked the lower half of the Appalachian Trail. He then moved to his birthplace in Vermont and hiked many of the Vermont, New Hampshire, and New Brunswick, Canada, trails where he enjoyed meeting other hikers and discovering the interconnectedness of life. He was a true naturalist with compassion for our earth and all of the people and creatures that inhabit it.
Craig was a gifted writer and poet and an actor full of wit and humor. He loved history, Bob Dylan music, jazz, blues, and bluegrass music as well as dancing, cooking, geology, biking, canoeing, and photography.
Here in St. Albans, he had worked for both the Samaritan House, helping the homeless, and Northwest Counseling, where he was a companion to some of their clients.
Craig was a brave man who followed his heart to be real, to question, and to live each moment fully.
His message to all of us is, "For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered? Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance."
Craig is survived by parents Beverly and Tom; his brother Michael and sister-in-law Karen; his grandmother Marie; his soul friend Janice; loving aunt Rie; and many cousins from Rochester, N.Y.
Craig lived life fully and was extremely grateful to the Monks at St. Benoit, P.Q., the priests of the Greek Orthodox Monastery in Richford, and to Father James of Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, Va., all who guided him as he sought a deeper relationship with God and the world around him. He felt very close to his trail family across the country and his numerous friends here in Vermont, who made it all worthwhile.
A funeral mass will be offered Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at Holy Angels Church, Lake St., St. Albans. It will be followed by a gathering of family and friends at the cottage of Paul Rublee, Craig's dear friend and guide, on Georgia Shore, where we will come together to reminisce and celebrated Craig's life. We will have a medicine wheel in honor of Craig. After choosing the date for his mass, we discovered it was the birth date of General Ulysses S. Grant. Go shining, dear Craig, and we will always remember the love you brought to all of us and to this earth.
