Alice M. Labounty

Alice M. Labounty, 89, of Newport died peacefully April 5, 2009, in Newport.
Mrs. Labounty was born October 2, 1919, in North Troy, a daughter of Harry and Edith (Cassidy) Sargent.
On April 18, 1939, she married Reginald Labounty Sr., who predeceased her in 1990.
She was a dairy farmer on her own farm for many years, and she was a minister with the Newport Advent Church.
She enjoyed gardening, baking, playing the accordian, reading, and being in the company of her family.
She is survived by four children: Reginald Labounty Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Canaan, Alice Bowman and her husband, Leland, of Derby, Beverly Keenan of Derby, and Rachel Leithead and her husband, William, of Newport Center; by stepdaughter Shirley Fortin of Irasburg; by 17 grandchildren: Debbie Durgin, Sharon Payne, David and Michael Labounty, Joanne Lawson, Karen Thomas, Steve and Scott Bowman, Gordon and Brian Tice, Rose Daigle, James Leithead, Janet Morin, David and Darren Fortin, Betsy Pion, Jeffrey Broe, and Mary Skidgel; by 40 great-grandchildren; by four great-great-grandchildren; by her sister Helen Morse of Jay; by her sister-in-law Roberta Sargent of Jay; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son-in-law Ronald Keenan; by grandson Roger Labounty; by two brothers, Roy Sargent and Hugh Hazzard; and by sisters Margaret Mayhew and Bernice Beerworth.
Funeral services were held April 9 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Robert Cargill officiating. Spring interment will be in Newport Center cemetery.
Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Labounty’s memory may be made to the Newport Health Care Center, paliative care, Prouty Drive, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Robert “Bob” M. Lancaster

Robert “Bob” M. Lancaster, 51, of Derby died April 10, 2009, at North Country Hospital in Newport, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Lancaster was born July 19, 1957, in Tokyo, Japan, a son of Lois Smith, who survives him.
He was predeceased by his father, Royden Lancaster Sr.; by his stepfather, Lawrence Smith; by his wife, Fahrvnnisa; and by his extended family in Turkey.
He is survived by his daughter Jessica Lancaster of Bristol, Connecticut; by stepchildren: Tim, Robbie, Michelle, Joshua, and Sarah; by his brothers: Royden Lancaster, and his wife, Marlene, of Derby, Roger Lancaster and his wife, Kristan, of Williston, Randy Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Newport as well as his twin brother, Raymond Lancaster, of Palm Harbor, Florida; by his sister Linda Bussiere and her husband, Andre, of Newport; by stepsister Jody Casey and her husband, Sean, of Newport; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gateway Center in Newport. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, in care of Deborah Smith, 77 Young Street, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Dorothy M. Ling

Dorothy M. Ling, 93, a lifelong resident of Greensboro, died at her home on April 5, 2009.
Mrs. Ling was born September 26, 1915, a daughter of Alton and Bertha (Young) White. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1933, Johnson Normal School in 1935, and Goddard College in 1970.
On September 2, 1950, she married Fred A. Ling.
She taught for many years in northern Vermont, mostly in elementary schools but also in special education.
She was a member of Greensboro United Church of Christ, the Caspian Lake Grange, the Hazen Road Pomona Grange, and Riverside Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was an active volunteer in many aspects of the community. She served as a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and on county and state foundations. She was a school director for ten years, a founding member and active participant in the Greensboro Historical Society, and a volunteer at the Greensboro Free Library and the Greensboro Nursing Home.
She was a local news reporter for many years with the Hardwick Gazette and the Caledonian-Record. In 1981, she was selected as Vermont’s Outstanding Senior Citizen, and in 1985 she was recognized by the United Church of Christ as an Outstanding Laywoman. The town of Greensboro honored her in 1990 with the Greensboro Award for Community Service.
Survivors include her son Arthur Ling and his wife, Sharon, of Hardwick; her daughter Alice Crosby and her husband, Ben, of Derry, New Hampshire; her daughter-in-law Janice Ling of Springfield, Missouri; five grandchildren: Tonya Madison and Nicole Tilden of Barre and Eric, Monica and Kelsey of Springfield, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren; her sister Clara Wells and her husband, Marvin, of Marshfield; her brother Lawrence White of Glover; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, on September 13, 1984; by their son Alton on March 24, 2009; by her sister Josephine White; and by her brother Irwin White.
A memorial service was held at the Greensboro United Church of Christ April 14.
Donations in Mrs. Ling’s memory may be made to the Greensboro United Church of Christ, Mission Fund, Greensboro, Vermont 05841; or to Caledonia Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819.

June A. (Grover) Messier

June A. (Grover) Messier, 80, of Newport died April 10, 2009, in Newport, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Messier was born December 15, 1928, in Newton, Massachusetts, a daughter of James Madison Grover and Eleanor (Perry) Grover Vanier. She grew up in Lyndonville and graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1946.
After high school she worked at Vermont Tap and Die and then moved to Newport where she worked at Montgomery Ward and H.P. Hood.
She was a very sweet and sociable person, enjoying her time with family and friends. She had a lifelong love of the ocean and spent many childhood summers on Martha’s Vineyard.
She loved to dance, especially to big band music. She met her husband, Renald J. Messier, at the Red Wing Dance Hall. They were married on June 28, 1952, and shared a happy life together raising two daughters.
She dearly loved her mother- and father-in-law, and she loved spending Sundays at the farmhouse in Newport Center. Her husband’s famous garden was a big part of her life, as was playing cards on Saturday nights. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She is survived by her husband, Renald, of Newport; by her daughters Jane E. Tomlinson and her husband, Robert, of Montverde, Florida, and Ann Marie Lanoue and her husband, James, of Barton; by grandchildren: Andrew and Laura Lanoue; by her sister Barbara Bell and her husband, James; by sisters-in-law: Henriette Armstrong and her husband, Robert, Andrea Smith, Marguerite Burrell, and Claire Burlton and her husband, Pete; by brother-in-law Roger Messier and his wife, Bettie; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents; by her sister Marion Parker and her husband, Tom; and by her brother James Grover.
Funeral services were held April 14 at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Newport.
Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Messier’s memory may be made to St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, in care of the centennial fund, 191 Clermont Terrace, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Jessie E. Mitchell

Jessie E. Mitchell, 99, of Newport died April 7, 2009, at her home in Newport.
Mrs. Mitchell was born April 14, 1909, in Newport Center, a daughter of Lucius and Florence (Ouimet) Allen.
In 1938 she married Warren S. Mitchell, who predeceased her on November 12, 1988.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She held membership with the United Church of Newport.
She is survived by her sister Shirley Turner of Newport; by her nephew Duncan McKay and his wife, Judy, of Orange; by her niece Louise Young and her husband, Neil, of East Corinth; and by great-nieces Nan Mann, her husband, John, and their son Michael Bottiggi, Joan Whiting, her husband, Larry, and their son Benjamin, and Kathryn Lamson, her husband, Albert, and their children Matthew and Allison. She was predeceased by sister-in-law Marjorie McKay and great-nephew Duncan McKay Jr.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery in Newport.

Irene Marie Pollander

Irene Marie Pollander, 103, of Barton died April 8, 2009, in Barton.
Mrs. Pollander was born in L’Ange Gardier, Quebec, on November 10, 1905, a daughter of Felix and Lea (Roberts) Hamel.
On May 15, 1923, she married Stanley Pollander, who predeceased her on April 20, 1977.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, spending time with family, and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.
She is survived by her children: Nancy Cresswell and her husband, Greg, of Newport Center, Pauline Ryan of Barton, Genevieve Lafleur and her husband, Richard, of Orleans, Joan Souliere of Newport, and Philip Pollander and his wife, Barbara, of West Palm Beach, Florida; by 26 grandchildren; by 35 great-grandchildren; by ten great-great-grandchildren; by sister-in-law Theresa Pollander of Norwalk, Connecticut; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sons Francis and Aldei Pollander; by siblings: Aldei, Claudiemere, Arestide, Gerard, Joseph, and George Hamel, Cecile Bouchard, Elizabeth Danielson, and Theresa Carroll; by stepbrother Arsyne; and by niece Joanie Blay, with whom she spent her early childhood with her aunt Irene and uncle Stanley.
Funeral services were held April 14 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic cemetery in Barton on May 18 at 11 a.m.

Mary Elizabeth Thyselius

Mary Elizabeth Thyselius, 74, of Newport, known as “Grammy Angel, ” died April 12, 2009, in Barton.
Mrs. Thyselius was born April 29, 1934, in Long Island, New York, to William and Matilda (Brouffil) Bovers.
She graduated as an art major from Skidmore College in Saratoga Spring, New York. She held careers in advertising design, art therapy, and nursing home activities.
She was the widow of Peter John Thyselius.
She is survived by her daughter Annie Rose Brown of Derby; by her son John Peter Thyselius of Manville, New Jersey; three grandchildren: Jason Philhower of Derby and Autumn Thyselius and Justice Thyselius of New Jersey; and by two great-grandchildren, Jonas Philhower of Newport and Dakota Truett of Arizona.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport. Interment will be held at the Holy Cross cemetery in Bernardsville, New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, 191 Clermont Terrace, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Carla M. (Carriero) Deskins

Carla M. (Carriero) Deskins, 58, of Holland died peacefully August 22, 2009, at home.
Mrs. Deskins was born October 8, 1950, in Waterbury, Connecticut, daughter of Angelo and Louise (Spallone) Carriero.
She graduated from the University of Connecticut and worked as a bookkeeper and accountant.
She loved gardening, country music, especially attending the annual Country Music Association Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, and rescuing pugs.
She was predeceased by her father; and by her brother John. She is survived by her mother, Louise; by her children Damian Deskins and his wife, Abby, and Ana Deskins, all of Holland; by two beautiful grandchildren, Kaya Macayla and Iliana Maitland of Holland; and by her special friend John Joly of Holland.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, at the Holland Methodist Church with the Reverend Don Gerber officiating. Interment will follow in Mead Hill cemetery in Holland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Deskins’ memory may be made to her favorite charity, Pug Rescue of New England, or to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, One Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03756.

Armand Fortin

Armand Fortin, 77, of Brookfield, Massachusetts, formerly of Spencer, Massachusetts, died July 15, 2009, in Rose Monahan Hospice House in Worcester, Massachusetts, after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Fortin was born in Irasburg, a son of George and Emmercienne Fortin. He graduated from Orleans High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany from 1952 to 1954.
He moved to Spencer in 1954, but before leaving Vermont he worked as a meat cutter for Ste. Marie’s Market in North Troy. He worked at the F.W. Madigan Company in Worcester for 32 years, followed by ten years in the Spencer-East Brookfield School System before retiring.
He enjoyed car races and baseball discussions with his sons. He was the master foreman for all his family members’ building projects. He will truly be missed.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Rita Fortin; four daughters: Deborah Johnson and her husband, Paul, of Atlanta, Georgia, Anita Trepanier and her husband, Ed, of East Brookfield, Jeannette Fortin of Spencer, and Laura Merwin and her husband, Mike, of Ware, Massachusetts; two sons, Michael Fortin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and Eddie Fortin of Brookfield; sister Evelyn Upton and her husband, Harold, of Parker, Colorado; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by three brothers: George, Roland, and Leo; and by one sister, Annette.
