Doris Barrup
Doris Barrup, 98, died May 21, 2009, in Derby.
Mrs. Barrup was born February 7, 1911, a daughter of George and Ruth (Cargill) Gray. She attended Morgan schools and graduated from Charleston High School in 1929.
She married
her high school friend, Ward Barrup, in 1931, and they had a son, Rodney.
She represented the town of Morgan in the Vermont Legislature from 1957 to 1959 and represented district 46 for Derby, Holland, and Charleston after reapportionment for 1967 and 1968.
She was formerly a telephone operator and later became the agent of New England Telephone and Telegraph Company. She worked as a Customs officer for three summer seasons. She worked for a few months during the war in a factory. After leaving the Legislature, she became a real estate broker and worked in that field for 23 years.
She was a member of the Morgan United Church and the Farm Bureau. She served as a school director from 1940 to 1956, ballot clerk from 1938 to 1953, secretary of the town Republican committee from 1953 to 1956, county council president from 1951 to 1953, and Farm Bureau executive committee member.
She was active in community affairs on projects and was co-chairman in the annual maple sugar-on-snow supper for more than 30 years.
She retired at age 83 and began enjoying homemaking, gardening, and being with family. Her family was always first in her life and interests. To her, Morgan was the nicest place to grow old and its residents are the best and kindest of people.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ward, in April 1977. She leaves to grieve her son Rodney and his wife, Marilyn; granddaughter Janet Slater and her husband, Bob; grandson Kevin; sister-in-law Elizabeth Gray Applebee; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 24 at the Morgan United Church with the Reverend Michael DeSena officiating. Interment followed in Clark cemetery in Morgan.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Barrup’s memory may be made to the Morgan United Church.

Russell Bedor
Russell R. Bedor, 48, of Newark and Island Pond died Sunday evening, May 17, 2009, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Mr. Bedor was born April 3, 1961, in St. Johnsbury, a son of Albert and Alberta (Drown) Bedor.
He loved being around his large family, and he touched the hearts of all who knew him. His smile and sense of humor will not be forgotten. He considered himself to be a “jack of all trades, master of none.”
He loved working and playing in the great outdoors of the Northeast Kingdom. He was a self-employed logger for many years. Swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, and cookouts with family and friends brought him much pleasure.
He also did carpentry, landscaping, farming, and mechanics over the years. He served the town of Newark for several years as road commissioner.
A devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, he was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his fiancée, Deborah Stough, of Island Pond; three children: Melissa Bedor and her fiancé, Kevin Irwin, of Newark, Barbara Bedor of Laconia, New Hampshire, and Mike Bedor and his fiancée, Julie Woods, of Clinton, Massachusetts; three grandchildren: Kobe, Caydence, and Ava; his father, Albert Bedor, of Wheelock; his brother David Bedor and his wife, Stefney, of Lyndonville; five sisters: Nancy Lacoss and her husband, Brian, of Lyndonville, Susie Choquette of Lyndonville, Catherine MacPherson of St. Johnsbury, Janet Simpson and her husband, Mark, of Lyndonville, and Patricia Hunter and her husband, Cary, of Lyndonville; sister-in-law Susan Bedor of Lyndon Center; brother-in-law Richard McFarland of Newark; and many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Alberta Bedor, in 2000; by two brothers, Stephen in 1999 and Paul as an infant; and by brother-in-law Richard Choquette in 1994.
A memorial service was held May 22 at Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Tim Pittman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant View cemetery in Newark.

Edwin Frank Burdick
After a long and courageous battle with cancer, and with profound dignity, Edwin Frank Burdick, 58, of Brownington Center closed his eyes, died, and went to Heaven at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at North Country Hospital in Newport.
Mr. Burdick was born the fifth child of Marjorie and Willard “Gus” Burdick at the Orleans County Memorial Hospital in Newport on June 5, 1950. He attended Orleans Graded School and graduated in the very first class of students at Lake Region Union High School, in June 1968.
On July, 12, 1975, he married
Susan Mabel Blair at the Brownington Congregational Church. Joining the happy couple during their long and loving journey together would be four children, 12 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Just a couple of days after graduating, he went to work at Ethan Allen in Orleans. He would be the third of four generations of Burdick family members to work at the mill, staying there for 40 years until ill health forced him to retire in 2008.
He was very proud of his town and wanted to be an active member, lending a hand doing whatever would make the community safer. To that end, he belonged to the Orleans Fire Department for 41 years, rising to the rank of captain for a time. He served the Orleans Fire Association as its president, and at the time of his death was serving as vice-president. He served on the Orleans Ambulance Squad for many years.
He served Brownington as its fire warden for more than 25 years, retiring on December 31, 2008, turning it over to his son-in-law Adam Brunelle. He was the Brownington cemetery commissioner for more than 25 years, caring for the four cemeteries in town. At the end of last year, he turned that position over to Wayne Libby.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and for the last couple of months, his great-granddaughter. He loved his family with all his heart. He would carefully help plan family gatherings at each holiday, making sure that all were there and that there was plenty of good homemade food to eat.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking in his shop at home, stacking firewood, and going to the B&W Snack Bar for french fries.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; by his four children: Donna of Charleston and Brownington Center, Robert “Robbie” and his wife, Trina, of Lyndonville, Scott and his wife, Jessica, of Brownington Center, and Debbie and her husband, Adam, of Brownington Center; by 12 grandchildren; by one great-granddaughter; by his mother, Marjorie, of Glover; by three brothers: Everett “Nick” and his wife, Cora Ann, of Albany, Terry and his wife, Tracey, of Newport, and Larry and his wife, Gert, of Orleans; by his mother-in-law, Betty Blair, of Westmore; by sisters-in-law Roberta Humphrey and her husband, Russell, of Columbia, New Hampshire, and Eileen Rossier of Myerstown, Pennsylvania; and by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and more cousins than anyone can count. He was predeceased by his father, Willard “Gus”; by his sisters Christine and Patricia; by brother-in-law Gordon; and by his brother Bernard.
Funeral services will be at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Sias Avenue in Newport on Wednesday, May 27, at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Brian Fecher officiating. An honor guard will be provided by the Orleans Fire Department and others. Burial will be in the family lot at the Brownington Center cemetery, and will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Helen C. Cain
Helen C. Cain, 90, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died April 10, 2009, in Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Cain was born on March 19, 1919, in Barton a daughter of Harold and Lena (Blodgett) Cass.
She married
Edward Joseph Cain; he predeceased her.
During World War II she served in the U.S. Navy.
She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Middlebury College and was a junior high schoolteacher in Natick, Massachusetts.
She is survived by two sons, Edward J. Cain of Fredericksburg and Christopher E. Cain of Brattleboro. She was predeceased by her brother Harland Cass; and by two sisters, Alice Mclean and Marion Mueller.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton on Friday, May 29, at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Paul’s Catholic cemetery in Barton.

Jay Bryant Feeley
Jay Bryant Feeley, 51, of Brownington, beloved husband of Rachel (Comtois) Feeley, died May 18, 2009, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, after suffering from a long battle with diabetes.
Mr. Feeley was born June 1, 1957, in St. Albans, a son of Gerald and Gala (Foster) Feeley. He grew up in Highgate Center and attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School, graduating in 1975.
On September 1, 2001, he married
Rachel Comtois, who survives him.
He was first employed with Feeley Well Drilling, a family business since 1880, and for several years he operated his own well-drilling company. He later worked at Marcelino Company, Incorporated, in Burlington as a hydraulic mechanic. Most recently he worked at Calkins Sand and Gravel as a heavy equipment mechanic and as “tinker man” at Nature By Design.
He was a member of the Brownington Congregational Church.
He enjoyed tinkering on motors and spending time with his animals and family. He liked creating with his hands using stone and wood.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate, Rachel Feeley, of Brownington; by his six children: Angela of Highgate, Michael of Sheldon, Justin of Fairfield, Ryan and his companion, Stacy Laroche, of Belvidere, Ashleigh Feeley of Fairfield, and Paige Airoldi and her husband, Anthony, of Highgate; by three grandchildren: Kohle, Natalie, and Broadie; by two brothers, Dennis Feeley and his companion, Cathy, of Swanton and Randy Feeley and his wife, Candy, of Highgate; by two sisters, Jerri Brouillette and her husband, David, of Sheldon and Julie Ladue and her husband, Phillip, of Highgate; by his mother-in-law, Julie Comtois, of Dracut, Massachusetts; by brother-in-law Kenney Comtois of Goldsboro, North Carolina; by sister-in-law Laurie Hopkins and her husband, Edric, of Nashua, New Hampshire; by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles; and by his animal “children”: Sophia-Mae, Zu-Zu Petals, Isabella, Miss Vivian, sheep, goats, and assorted cats. He was predeceased by his parents, Gerald Feeley and Gala (Feeley) Barnum; by his stepfather, Burhl Barnum; by his nephew Jason Brouillette; and by his father-in-law, Raymond Comtois.
Funeral services were held May 24 at the Brownington Congregational Church with the Reverend Harvey Bartlet and the Reverend Herb Perry officiating.

Thelma Carrie Wells
Thelma Carrie Wells, 76, of Mena, Arkansas, died May 18, 2009, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Mrs. Wells was born in Littleton, New Hampshire, on December 24, 1932, a daughter of David and Jessie (Ennor) Libby. She was brought up by Newton and Ethel Peters when her parents died while she was an infant.
The family spent several years in the Charleston area before she went to Arkansas.
She was the most loving and caring woman anyone ever knew. She loved all of her family and friends.
She was a member of the Frontier Animal Society. She liked to travel, make crafts, quilt, garden, spend time with her animals, and go to tag sales.
She was a perfect mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she would have become a perfect great-great-grandmother.
She is survived by her children: Wanda Steele and her husband, Kenneth, of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Kittey Butler of Barton, Cindy Denton and her husband, Ricky, of Mena, Jimmy Wells and his wife, Lana, of Heavner, Oklahoma, and Penny Wells of Mena; by 18 grandchildren; by 27 great-grandchildren; and by her sister Betty Robinson of Brownington. She was predeceased by her brother David E. Libby; by two sisters, Velma C. Bowman and Wyllian M. Sanborn; by three grandchildren; and by her longtime companion, Howard Brooks.
Funeral services were held May 26 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside cemetery in East Charleston.

Rosemary Bessent
Rosemary I. Bessent, 56, of Derby died on May 31, 2010, in Newport.
She was born February 16, 1954, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, a daughter of Lawrence Fogg and the late Patricia Facteau.
She was an active member of the Derby United Church. She enjoyed quilting, and craft work.
She is survived by a son, Jason Bessent, and by a granddaughter, Ember Bessent, both of Windsor; by her father, Lawrence Fogg, of Derby; by the following brothers and sisters: Vernon Fogg and his wife, Kim, Stanley Fogg, Matthew Fogg and his wife, Karen, all of West Hartford, Pamela Stanley and her husband, William, of West Virginia, Marjorie Brown and her husband, David, of Maryland, Josephine Fogg and Elizabeth Fogg of Morrisville; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was predeceased by three sisters: Valarie Fogg, Sandra Fogg, and Christine Punt.
Funeral services were held on June 4 at the Derby United Church with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating.

John Henry “Running Deer” Brin
John Henry “Running Deer” Brin died on April 28, 2010, after losing his battle with cancer. He died peacefully at North Country Hospital in Newport, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Mr. Brin was born in Nova Scotia, a son of Helen (Fitzgerald) and Emil Brin, on March 30, 1924. He was proud of his Canadian citizenship as well as his American citizenship.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Evelyn Carrara Brown, of Albany and Raynham, Massachusetts; his daughter Geraldine (Bruce) Keane, of Connecticut; two step-daughters, Elaine Dun and Laurie Brown of Massachusetts; a brother, Steven, of Rhode Island; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews, both in Canada and the U.S.
He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Lillian and Margaret; and his son Charles.
Mr. Brin spent most of his working life in the Attleboro, Massachusetts, area, in the chemical plating industry, rising to the level of plant manager with the Balfour Company. He also took pride in the fact that he was a Boy Scout leader for over 50 years.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and fought during World War II. He rose to the rank of sergeant. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in battle on Peleiu Island on November 6, 1944. He was a radio operator with Company L, 321st Infantry Regiment. He was also a member of the Orleans American Legion Post #23.
He was proud of his native heritage, and was know as Running Deer. He was a chief of the Abenaki tribe, and also served as an elder and medicine person with the Wollomonuppoag Indian Council of Plainville, Massachusetts; Dighton Council Oak, of Dighton, Massachusetts; and was one of the three founders of the Algonquin Medicine Society of Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont.
Running Deer was laid to rest in native tradition at his family’s private cemetery. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and students the world over.
