Claire M. Riendeau
Claire M. Riendeau, 95, of Newport died peacefully March 5, 2010, in Newport.
She was born November 17, 1914, in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, a daughter of Henry and Malvina (Beauregard) Cordeau.
On July 9, 1940, she married
Adelard Riendeau who predeceased her in 1980.
Mrs. Riendeau was a seamstress for the former Newport Plastics Company of Newport. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Newport, the Daughters of Isabella, and Community Circle where she enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening and cooking. She is survived by her children: Therese Auger and her husband, Normand, of Charlottesville, Virginia; Denise Desrochers and her husband, Real, of Newport Center; and Marc Riendeau of Newport. She is also survived by the following grandchildren: Diane Smith and her husband, Garrett, of Charlottesville, Virginia; Erik Auger and his wife, Laura, of Lake St. Louis, Missouri; Michael Auger of Franklin, Indiana; Robert Desrochers and his wife, Carol, of Newport; Rene Desrochers and his companion, Penny Dubois; Randy Desrochers and his wife, Jessica, of Newport Center; Chantal Riendeau and her companion, Nicholas Bourassa, of Jay; Paul Riendeau and his companion, Jackie, of Tilton, New Hampshire; Marc Riendeau and his wife, Amber, of Marysville, California; and Robert Riendeau of Tilton, New Hampshire; 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by five brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport. Spring interment will be at St. Mary’s cemetery.

Carol Cameron Smith
Carol Cameron Smith of Greensboro died March 7, 2010, at the age of 91.
Born August 9, 1918, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, to William Roberts Cameron and Narcissa Beal Cameron of Paoli, Pennsylvania, she married
David B. Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1939, and they made their home in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they raised four children. They moved to Greensboro in 1954 to re-establish the Highland Lodge on Craftsbury Road as a summer resort. Mrs. Smith was the principal chef for many years and Carol’s Cookbook is still a favorite of hungry Highland Lodgers.
Winters, they ran the Darling Farmhouse in Burke, the Hub in Jeffersonville, and Andersen’s in Stowe.
They served as guardians ad litem for children in need of care and supervision. In 1980, Mr. and Mrs. Smith retired from the lodge. They traveled to every state in the Union and spent many years with their friends in Pahrump, Nevada.
Mrs. Smith was a competitive diver and long-distance swimmer, golfer and tennis player, downhill and cross-country skier and loved walking the woods. She was a constant supporter of the Episcopal Church, where she worked as a volunteer and made strong friendships. She also loved being with, cooking for, and entertaining friends and family, singing the night away at bonfires on the beach, almost as much as dancing with her husband, Dave. He died August 8, 2005.
She leaves their four children: David B. Smith Jr. and his wife, Wilhelmina; Roberts Cameron Smith and his wife, Aloha; John Otey Smith and his wife, Nancy; Barbara Smith Cedarfield and her husband, David; nieces: Narcissa Boyd Gomes; Judy Boyd Dales and her husband, Andy; Nancy Smith Smith and her husband, Jay; nephews: Robert Ragsdale Smith Jr. and his wife, Theresa; Alexander Duff Murray and his wife, Jill; Cameron Murray and his wife, Connie; seven grandchildren: Alexander, Samantha, Coeli, Finnegan, Lincoln, Jeffrey and Matthew; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Barbara Cameron Murray of Bellevue, Washington, and Narcissa Cameron Boyd of Greensboro.
There will be a memorial service honoring the life of Carol Smith at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Hardwick on Monday, March 29, for family only. A larger gathering of all her friends who wish to celebrate her life will be announced later on. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food pantry at the church.
Thomas S. Steele
Thomas S. Steele 69, of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Derby, Vermont, died unexpectedly in Naples, Florida, on Saturday, March 6.
He was born on January 1, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a son of Margaret S. Steele and Wolcott L. Steele, both from Iowa. He graduated from Frankford High School in June of 1959 and attended Temple University for two years in Philadelphia
He founded Frankford/Wayne Mastering Labs in Philadelphia in 1966 after various stints as a disc jockey at radio stations in the Philadelphia area. In 1974, he expanded the Frankford/Wayne operation into New York, New York, where he was the owner and chief Engineer until 1990 when he moved to Derby. The New York operation was taken over by his daughter Tracy Lynn Steele. In 1991 he built and founded WMOO-FM Radio in Derby, and was the radio station’s owner, chief engineer, manager and morning show personality until 2001 when he sold the stations (WMOO-FM and WIKE-AM) and retired.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Ann Steele; his daughter, Tracy Lynn Steele-Mahoney; his grandson, Jackson Thomas Mahoney; his son-in-law, Paul Mahoney; his step-daughter, Chelsea Ann Pulver; his brother, Robert W. Steele; and his sister-in-law, Nancy Steele, as well as many close friends and extended family.

Kenneth L. Toombs
Kenneth L. Toombs, 86, died on Monday, March 1, 2010, at his home with his family.
Ken was born in Sheepshead Bay, New York, on February 7, 1924. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army while attending The Citadel. He was seriously injured in combat on November 18, 1944, in Germany while a member of the 102nd Infantry Division.
In 1946, he married
Marjorie (Sister) Post, his wife of 63 years. Together they raised four daughters in Massapequa, New York. Ken operated the Charles E. Krohn Agency in Massapequa as an insurance agent for 40 years before retiring to Vermont in 1989. He was a longtime summer resident of Island Pond.
He enjoyed motorcycles, his annual trips to Nassau, Bahamas since 1963, his Morgan horses, two dogs, (Zack and Matlock), and mowing his lawn!
Ken’s memory is cherished by his wife, Marjorie P. Toombs, and his three daughters: Leslie and James Bell of Saratoga Springs, New York, Patricia and Alan Cole of Westmore, and Joanne and Fred Doucette of Monkton; and his brother-in-law, W. Deane Post of Massapequa, New York. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his oldest daughter, Nancy Parke Vessalico, in 2006; his brother Girard S. Toombs; and most recently his sister, Viola Lottman-Radzow.

Thelma F. Bergeron
Thelma F. Bergeron, 94, died Sunday, August 30, 2009, at North Country Hospital in Newport.
Born August 7, 1915, in Pearceton, Quebec, Mrs. Bergeron was a daughter of Earl and Francis (Gage) Corey.
She married
Charles W. Bergeron, who predeceased her in 2005.
She was a member of the Orleans Country Club, where she worked as a pastry chef. She loved baking pies and doughnuts and socializing at the Orleans Country Club. Her family and friends were her greatest joy.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Charles and Johanne Bergeron of St. Armand, Quebec; nephew Wayne Sornberger of Burlington; and good friend Evelyn Wagner of Newport. She was predeceased by an infant son.

Kenneth Eugene Frizzell Jr.
Kenneth Eugene Frizzell Jr., 55, of East Charleston, beloved husband of Grace Frizzell, died suddenly August 30, 2009, in West Charleston.
Mr. Frizzell was born February 9, 1954, in Concord, a son of Kenneth and Ellen (Jessman) Frizzell. He grew up in Lunenburg, Gilman, and Wallingford.
On May 25, 1974, he married
Grace Colburn, who survives him. After his marriage he lived in Rutland for a short time and more recently in East Charleston.
He was employed by Tivoly in Derby Line, where he was a steel receiver and cut off operator for more than 30 years. He was a delinquent tax collector for the town of Charleston.
He was a devoted father, attending all his children’s sport and school functions.
He loved to hunt, snowmobile, play cards with his friends, and especially play with his “grand boys.” He was a Little League coach.
He was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in East Charleston, Charleston Historical Society, Mount Sinai Shrine Temple 3, and the Northeast Fire Brigade Parade Unit. He was past master of Island Pond Lodge 44 of Free and Accepted Masons, master of Valley Lodge 106, past district deputy grand master of District 10, treasurer of North Star Chapter 25 of the Order of the Eastern Star, Charleston Volunteer Fire Department member and former treasurer, and Charleston town fire warden.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Frizzell, of East Charleston; by his children Amy Sherlaw and her husband, Fred, of Derby and Daniel Frizzell and his wife, Alicia, of Bristol; by his cherished grandchildren: Sam and Evan Sherlaw of Derby and Owen and Jack Frizzell of Bristol; by his siblings: Edie Jones and her husband, Gary, of West Palm Beach, Florida, Robert Frizzell and his wife, Audrey, of East Charleston, Joan Henry of Claremont, New Hampshire, Carol Bolduc and her husband, Henry, of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and Genie Davis and her husband, Martin, of East Charleston; by his father-in-law, Richard Colburn Sr., of East Charleston; by brother-in-law Richard Colburn Jr. and his wife, Diane, of East Charleston; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ellen Frizzell; by his mother-in-law, Alta Colburn; and by brother-in-law Charles Henry.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 4, at the Plymouth Congregational Church in East Charleston with the Reverend Richard Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Hillside cemetery. There will be a Masonic service at the church preceeding the funeral service.

Emma A. Morin
Emma A. Morin, 78, died Sunday, August 23, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at Edgewater Hospice Care Center in Edgewater, Florida.
Mrs. Morin was born October 31, 1930, in Eastman, Quebec, daughter of Walter and Belona Laramee.
She had recently celebrated her fifty-ninth wedding anniversary with her spouse, Marcel G. Morin, who survives her.
She and her husband owned the Border Motel and Dining Room in Derby for 21 years and later retired to Edgewater, where they resided for 25 years. They owned and operated Big B Liquors, which son and daughter-in-law Michael and Sharon now own. They always enjoyed working together and serving the public. Her beautiful smile would light up every room.
Her sons Richard and Michael and his wife, Sharon, of Edgewater and daughter Carol of Key West, along with four grandchildren — Amanda, Zachary, Ashley, and Christopher — also survive her. Her son Mark predeceased her in 2004. She is survived by two sisters, Collette Lewis of Montpelier and Fern Carvalho of Bristol, Connecticut.
A Mass celebrating her life will be held at St. Edward’s Parish in Derby Line at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, followed by her burial at the Derby Line cemetery.

Wayne L. Provoncha
Wayne L. Provoncha, 61, of North Troy died August 29, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Provoncha was born July 11, 1948, in Morgan, a son of Joseph and Myrtie (Woodard) Provoncha.
On May 22, 1976, he married
Louise Cyr, who survives him.
He was a sander for Green Mountain Custom Finish in Newport. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He enjoyed NASCAR racing, going to the races in New Hampshire, and watching races on television. His favorite driver was #48. He enjoyed making model cars, and he liked old cars. He enjoyed growing flowers, and he was an avid reader.
He was devoted to his family, and everybody who knew him said he was a kind man with a big heart. He will be terribly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Provoncha, of North Troy; by children Kelly and Shawn Provoncha of North Troy; by three brothers: Stanley Provoncha of Washington, Dale Provoncha and his wife, Sharon, of Westfield, and Larry Provoncha and his wife, Carmelita, of New York; and by three sisters: June Provoncha of Florida, Madeline Dickson of Hardwick, and Shirley Achilles and her husband, Everett, of Florida. He will be especially missed by his little dog Travis, who was his constant companion.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the North Troy Village cemetery.

Marianne G. Sussman
Marianne G. Sussman, 79, died August 26, 2009, in Craftsbury where she spent summers for more than 20 years.
Mrs. Sussman was born September 10, 1929, in Berlin, Germany, and with her parents, escaped Nazi tyranny to come to the United States as a child.
She attended the Dalton School in New York City and graduated from the University of Chicago. She worked in book publishing in New York and for 20 years was on the editorial staff of Time magazine.
She is survived by Leonard, her husband of 51 years; by her son Mark Jacob and his wife, Mary-Jo; by her stepson David William; and by her grandchildren: Jane, Benjamin, Rebecca, Samuel, and Finn.
A memorial will be announced later.
Persis M. Tourangeau
Persis M. Tourangeau, 96, a resident of Craftsbury since 1948, died at her home Saturday, August 29, 2009, in the loving care of her family.
Mrs. Tourangeau was born in St. Albans on February 2, 1913, a daughter of Theodore and Malvina (Burnor) Pelkey. She attended grade school in St. Albans.
She married
Arthur Tourangeau, and they owned and operated a farm in Craftsbury where they raised their family. Persis loved her family and always enjoyed having them visit. She also enjoyed a good bingo game.
Survivors include two sons, James "Jim" Tourangeau of Craftsbury and Frederick Tourangeau and his wife, Ruth, of Newport; two daughters, Joyce Billado and her husband, Carlton, of Craftsbury, and Myrtle LaCroix and her husband, Antonio, of Brunswick, Maine; a sister, Marion Singleton, of Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire; 20 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in August 1994; by four children: Donald Billow, Barbara Mason, Raymond Billow, and an infant, Elizabeth Tourangeau; by a granddaughter, Kathy Hickock; by a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Tourangeau; by two brothers, Raymond Pelkey and Edward Pelkey; and by three sisters: Margarett Brooks, Loretta Lawrence, and Dora O'Brien.
A funeral service was held September 1 at the United Church of Craftsbury with the Reverend Alan Parker officiating. Interment will be in the Craftsbury Village cemetery.

Eric J. Young
Eric J. Young, 85, died at The Gardens at Canterbury in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on August 21, 2009.
Born March 3, 1924, in Neunkirchen, Saar, Germany, Mr. Young was a gifted student and received the Scheffel Prize for his literary skills.
During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the German navy, serving in the signal corps.
After the war, he studied at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, where he earned his doctorate degree in philosophy and comparative cultures in 1951.
He met his beautiful future wife, Ellen Macomber, while they were teaching at the same high school in El Boeuf, France. They married
August 2, 1950, in Frankfurt, Germany.
They both returned to settle in the U.S. He began his career in business in the New York City area, a place that held a special fascination for him throughout his life. A few years later he began his career in international sales for the W.R. Grace Company in La Paz, Bolivia. He later worked for the Mennen Company and with the Bristol-Myers Company, from which he retired in 1989 as vice president of sales in Eastern Europe.
While working with Bristol-Myers, he and his family lived in Bad Homburg, Germany, Rome, Italy, and Brussels, Belgium. The family took full advantage of his love for travel and exploration during this time, and has a wealth of happy memories of trips taken all over Europe.
After retirement Eric and Ellen lived half the year in North Troy and spent many happy summers there with friends and family. He thoroughly enjoyed his membership in the Newport Rotary Club during those years.
His family adored him for his sense of humor, his generosity, his work ethic, and his sense of adventure.
His passing is mourned by his wife, Ellen Young; by his daughter Ingrid Young of Edmond, Oklahoma, her husband, Robert Hamm, their children: James, Laura, and Ursula and her husband, Michael Bowling, and their children Ephraim and Joy Bowling; by his daughter Eve Young of Longmont, Colorado, her husband, Robert Drew, and their children Brendan and Nathan Drew; by his daughter Mary Jo Young and her sons, Benjamin and Matthew Apelman; and by countless friends.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in North Troy.
