Willard D. Holland

Willard Dudley “Bill” Holland, 80, of Hillcrest Avenue, Martinsville, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

He was born in Martinsville on Feb. 3, 1927, to Drewry Willard Holland and Eula Clark Holland Shelton. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He served in the Army National Guard and was a member of Martinsville VFW, Martinsville Moose Lodge, and Axton Lions Club. He was a member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church, where he was in the Senior Adult Men’s Class.

He retired from DuPont with 35 years of service.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Kimball Holland of the home; one daughter, Rhonda H. Minter of Martinsville; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred H. Lawrence of Surf Side Beach, S.C., and Frances H. Bledsoe of Martinsville; and two brothers, James M. “Jim” Holland of Martinsville and Bobby M. Holland of Danville.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chatham Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Michael Hatfield officiating. Burial with military rites by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard will be held in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel, and other times at the home of his daughter, Rhonda Minter, 4818 Stoney Mountain Road, Martinsville.

Memorials may be made to Chatham Heights Baptist Church, 1235 Old Chatham Road, Martinsville, Va. 24112, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 554, Roanoke, Va. 24003.

Neil C. Kennedy

Neil Charles Kennedy, 72, of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Brunswick Community Hospital in Supply, N.C. He donated his body to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., on Feb. 24, 1935, to Cornelius and Catherine Keating Kennedy.

He graduated from Archbishop Stephinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., and New York Phoenix School of Design in New York City.

Kennedy was employed by Pictorial Productions Inc. as a graphic artist, designing animated and 3-D pictures for premium product items and point of purchase displays. He later moved to Connecticut, where he worked for Medallic Art Co. as a design artist for 20 years. While there, he designed distinctive metals and awards such as the U.S. Olympic medallions, inaugural medals and national park medals. He also designed medals for Fortune 500 companies as well as universities.

In 1973 Kennedy created the comic strip “Mulligan,” which ran in newspapers in the Connecticut area until a newspaper strike forced a cutback of cartoons. After retiring and moving to Ocean Isle Beach, the cartoons ran in the Brunswick Beacon for a year. He won a design contest for a logo for the South Brunswick Water and Sewer Authority. He also designed awards for several golf courses in the area.

He served in the military police, and he was a Roman Catholic.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas and Gerard Kennedy; and two sons, Terry A. and Jerry G. Kendrick.

Surviving are his wife of eight years, Irene Bates Kendrick Kennedy of the home; three sons, Neil John Kennedy of Woodbury, Conn., Derwood Kendrick of Callands and Desmond Kendrick of Martinsville; two daughters, Doreen Davis of Newtown, Conn., and Tara DePalma of Ridgefield, Conn.; two sisters, Eleanor Armsheimer of Columbus, N.M., and Patty Lotz of Lakeside, Calif.; grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Seaside United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, N. Canton, Ohio 44720, in memory of his son, Terry Allen Kendrick, who died July 21, 2007.

Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

Andrea King

The funeral for Andrea C. King, 54, of 149 Memory Lane, Martinsville, who died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at noon Friday at Hairston Funeral Home. The Rev. Troy Beasley will officiate. Burial will be in the King family cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral for one hour before the funeral and other times at the home on Memory Lane.

She was born in Martinsville on May 14, 1953, to Andrew “Mutt” King and Florida Howell King. Her parents preceded her in death.

She had worked as a packer at Knauss Snack Foods for three years, and she was affiliated with New Light Baptist Church and Chestnut Knob Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Davlin M. King of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter, Sherri D. King of the home; two sisters, Maxine B. Pace of Washington, D.C., and Norma K. Broadhust of Martinsville; three brothers, Ronald E. Wooten of Martinsville, and Daniel L. King and Jackie L. King, both of the home; one granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.

Ira Abraham Lawless, 83, of Martinsville, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

Virginia Otra Roberts Martin, 87, of Stuart, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at her home.

She was born in Patrick County on Feb. 29, 1920, to William Henry Roberts and Minnie Stovall Roberts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Beamer Martin; an infant son, Elbert Martin; and seven stepchildren, Hattie Mae Moore, Vergie Belton, Bertha Smoot Holt, Lady Jean Eller, Moir Martin, Richard D. Martin and John D. Martin.

She was a member of High Point Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Edward Martin of Stuart; four daughters, Ellen Fulcher, Evelyn Hazelwood, Eva Cassady Thomas and Edna Smart, all of Stuart; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Guy Roberts of Stuart and Walter Roberts of Eden, N.C.; and three sisters, Ruth Allred of Mount Airy, N.C., Margaret Harris and Elsie Bishop, both of Buena Vista; and a half sister, Norma Jean Jones of Mount Airy.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Wayne Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the Hanby family cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of daughter Eva Thomas, 112 Martin Farm Road, Stuart.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Patrick County, 835 Woodland Drive, Suite 101, Stuart, Va. 24171.

Alton J. Moran

Alton J. Moran, 72, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home.

He was born Aug. 22, 1935, in Patrick County to Hester Moran and Elsie Brammer Moran Setliff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Moran; and his stepfather, Posey Setliff.

Surviving are his wife, Lora Moran of the home; a daughter, Joyce G. Sloan of Rocky Mount; three stepdaughters, Janice Gardner of Rocky Mount, Deborah Williams of Bassett and Lisa Boyd of Rocky Mount; two stepsons, Vernard Reynolds of Bassett and James Reynolds of Pulaski; 14 step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard “Glayton” Setliff of Patrick Springs, “Earvin” John Setliff of Collinsville and Barnard Setliff of Martinsville; five sisters, Betty Clifton of Ridgeway, Etta Brogan of Bassett, Gatha Lankford of Claudville, Mary Harbour of Woolwine and Ilene Ferguson of Henry.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with the Revs. Don Reynolds, Calvin Reynolds and Carson Williams and Chaplain Rick Poland officiating. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until time for the funeral today.

Richard F. Sonner

Richard Franklin Sonner, 84, of 250 Kings Way Road, Apartment 421, Martinsville, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home.

He was born in Strasburg on March 15, 1923, to Fred Brown Sonner and Mamie Maphis Sonner.

He served in the Army Air Corp. during World War II, received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Virginia in 1950, and retired from the accounting department at DuPont after 35 years of service.

Sonner was an active member of Broad Street Christian Church.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Lybrook Sonner of the home; a daughter, Diane Eberly of Richmond; a son, Richard Franklin Sonner Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Broad Street Christian Church with Dr. James A. Dickerson and the Rev. Bob Button officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until time for the service Thursday and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Broad Street Christian Church, 106 Broad St., Martinsville, Va. 24112, or to King’s Grant Fellowship Fund, 350 Kings Way Road, Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Delores Janet Todd, 77, of 300 Blue Ridge St., Martinsville, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, Martinsville.

She was born in Commor Hamtramck, Mich., on May 21, 1930, to Frank Kozlowski and Julia Evans Kozlowski. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Todd.

She worked in the office of American Furniture Company for 25 years, and she was a member of the Bassett Country Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Franco of Michigan and Ann Lankford of Martinsville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Norris Funeral Services and Crematory is handling arrangements.

Viola E. Wigington

The funeral for Viola Elsie Wigington, 91, of Martinsville, who died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, was held Tuesday at Bassett Funeral Service South Chapel with the Rev. Ben Barbour officiating. Burial was in the Old Center Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Tim Branscom, Thomas Hagwood, Chad Wright, Danny Taylor Jr., Kenny Craighead and Jerrod Claytor.
