Shelton

Austin Ryan Shelton, infant son of Amanda Shelton, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997 in Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tenn.

Survivors in addition to his mother include one sister, Katlin Shelton, Chilhowie; his grandfather, Roby Shelton, Bland; his grandmother, Kathy Evans, Marion; his great-grandmother, Mandy Shelton, Chilhowie; his godparents, Sammy and Nancy Galiher, Chilhowie; several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Cleghorn Valley Baptist Church Cemetery with Mr. Roby Hayden officiating.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Sheppard

John D. Sheppard, age 92, of Saltville, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997 in Valley Health Care Center, Chilhowie.

He was of the Christian faith and was preceded in death by his wife, Cansadie Sheppard.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Sheppard, Saltville, and Howard Lester, Bristol, Tenn.; two daughters, Sadie Pickle and Laura Cardwell, both of Saltville; a special daughter-in-law, Pamela Sheppard; a special friend, Willard Cardwell; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Blevins and the Rev. Rick Cuddy officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

D.R. Henderson Funeral Home in Saltville was in charge of arrangements.

Wacker

Mary Wallace Wacker died Sunday, Nov. 9, 1997 at her home in Emory.

She was a native of Screven County, Ga., where she was educated in the public schools, was a member of Sylvania Methodist Church and was active in Emory United Methodist Church.

She held an undergraduate degree from Birmingham Southern, Ala., and a master's degree from Longwood College. She had a career as an educator which included service in Florida, Alabama and Tennessee before moving to Virginia where she taught at Longwood College Campus School and most recently for 13 years taught in Washington County at Hayter's Gap and Greendale Elementary Schools.

Mrs. Wacker was a member of WCEA, VEA and NEA. She served as a former board member of Abingdon/Washington County Community Services Center Inc., and was a member of the Abingdon Day Care Advisory Board.

She was instrumental in organizing and served as president of the local chapter (Highlands) of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. She was a mentor teacher for the Emory & Henry teacher preparation program. The Mary Wallace Wacker Scholarship at Emory & Henry was established by persons familiar with her commitment to teaching.

In 1995, Mrs. Wacker received the Emory & Henry College Football 12th Man Award.

Survivors include her husband, Louis A. "Lou" Wacker; two sons, Charles A. Elmore, Tallahassee, Fla., and John E. Elmore, Athens, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Bruce E. Wacker, Richmond, and Kristen L. Kraus, Durham, N.C.; one stepson, L. Alexander Wacker III, Richmond; her mother, Mary T. Hollingsworth, Sylvania, Ga.; two brothers, L. Edward Hollingsworth, Jackson, Miss., and John C. Hollingsworth IV, Nashville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Martha Holly and Shelby Elmore; two step-grandchildren, Anna E. Whitehead and Adele U. Kraus; two nieces, Leslie K. Hollingsworth and Katherine Hollingsworth; one nephew, John Michael Hollingsworth.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Memorial Chapel at Emory & Henry College with the Rev. John Bardsley, the Rev. Kathie Parker-Wilson and the Rev. David St. Clair officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 12, in Screven County Memorial Cemetery, Sylvania, Ga.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Wallace Wacker Scholarship, designated for distinguished students in elementary education at Emory & Henry College, P.O. Box 947, Emory, VA 24327.

Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements.

Adams

Beulah Scott Adams, 82, widow of Franklin W. Adams, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 1997 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. She was a lifelong member of the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn A. Sledge of Durham, N.C., and Doris Burnett of Manhattan, Kansas; one brother, Glen Scott of Pasadena, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Anna Adams, Vesta Friesland and Viola Adams, all of Marion; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Calvin Tabor officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, Rt. 5 Box 25, Marion, VA 24354. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Seaver- Brown Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Barker

James William "Pete" Barker, 62, of Newark, Del., formerly of Troutdale, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997 at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.

Mr. Barker was born Jan. 6, 1935 in Troutdale, the son of Kline and Goldie Grubb Barker. He retired as manager with Acme Supermarkets in Newark, Del., with 30 years of service. He was preceded in death by his father, Kline Barker.

Surviving are his wife, Margie Simons Barker of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Richard Getz, Newark, Del.; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill and Anne Barker, Washington D.C., Kevin Barker and Daryl Barker, both of Newark, Del., and Alan and Patricia Barker of Elkton, Md.; his mother, Goldie Barker of Troutdale.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. in Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with Elder Raymond Shatley and Elder Dean Shepherd officiating. Interment was in Troutdale Cemetery.

Buchanan

William Fred "Billy" Buchanan, 56, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997 in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax.

He was a native of Rich Valley and a resident of Hillsville Southwestern Virginia Training Center.

Survivors include two brothers, Robert A. Buchanan, Chilhowie, and Howard Buchanan, Darby, Mont.; three sisters, Annie Novack, Elizabethtown, Ky., Margaret Thomas and Mary Burkett, both of Rich Valley; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Herman Cress officiating. Burial was in Ridgedale Cemetery.

Johnson

Raymond Johnson, 84, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997 in Cedar Lawn Convalescent Home, Abingdon.

Survivors include one brother, Harry Johnson, Saltville; two sisters, Clementine Johnson and Oma Lane, both of Saltville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Cook and the Rev. Bob Surber officiating. Burial was in Mahanaim Cemetery.

Neugent

Dixie Harris Neugent, 61, of Saltville, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.

She was a member of First Church of God and the widow of George E. Neugent.

Survivors include one son, Samuel Neugent, Saltville; one daughter, Angela Neugent, Saltville; one sister, Pat Delp, Chilhowie; three brothers, Fred Harris and Wally Harris, both of Saltville, and Graham Harris, Ohio; one granddaughter, Chelsey Neugent; one grandson, Gregory Harris; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Jeff Harris, Saltville.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Mumpower and the Rev. Allen Umbarger officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Parks

Virlia M. Parks of Bristol died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Grayson County but lived most of her life in Smyth County and the Bristol area. She was the widow of Robert Harrison Parks and was a member of East End Christian Church. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Iola Minnotti.

She is survived by two daughters, Myrtle E. Parris of Bristol, and Mrs. Sherman (Penny) Mercer of Marion; four sons, Henry C. Parks of Pulaski, Robert B. Parks of Richmond, Ted D. Parks and Blane E. Parks, both of Bristol; three daughters-in-law; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ron Thompson and minister Samuel K. Saunders officiating. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery.
