Davis
Lydia V. Davis, age 72, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She had lived in North Tazewell since 1990, formerly living at Gary No. 10, and Filbert, W.Va., the greater part of her life. She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband, James L. Davis; two daughters, Doris D. Frazier, Bristol, and Mrs. Lee (Rebecca) Ashbrook, Independence; two sons, Charles W. Davis, Thorpe, W.Va., and Thomas E. Davis Sr., Roanoke; six brothers, Claude Johnson, Portsmouth, Ohio, Thomas Johnson, Portsmouth, Va., Edward
Johnson and Douglas Johnson, both of Saltville, Samuel Johnson, Plasterco, and Harold Johnson, Chilhowie; three sisters, Annie Davis, Montvale, Louise Norris, Roanoke, and Betty Ashley, Glade Spring; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 1, in Fanning Funeral Home Chapel, Welch, W.Va., with the Rev. Joe Rodrigues officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Princeton, W.Va.

Goodman
Moselle Crewey Goodman, age 80, of Chilhowie, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997 in National Health Care of Bristol. She was the widow of W. Alden Goodman Sr.
Survivors include one son, Bill Goodman, Glade Spring; one daughter, Mrs. Warner (Jean) Collins, Chilhowie; one sister, Mrs. K.V. (Betty Jane) Osborne, Newport News; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in
Williams Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Dunn officiating. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery in Marion. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Lillian Ardella McAllister Bise, age 86, of Glade Spring, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Glade Spring.
Survivors include three sons, Ernest Bise and Charles Rudy Bise, both of Glade Spring, and Marvin Phibbs, Clarksville, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Cecile Eddy, Glade Spring.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Church of God of Prophecy, Glade Spring, with the Rev. Gary Jonas and the Rev. Robert Lanter officiating. Burial followed in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Beatrice Lucille
Smith Brown, age 69, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997 at her home in Marion.
She was a native of Saltville and had lived in Marion and Roanoke. She was a homemaker most of her life and was a member of the Atkins Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald and Debbie Hogston,
Smith Mountain Lake, and Dennis Brown, Sugar Grove; one daughter, Bobbie Wertz, Roanoke; her mother, Ora Lee Smith, Marion; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Helen Smith, Atkins, Joe and Jeanette Smith, Marion, and Buck and Ginny Smith, Troutdale; one sister and brother-in-law, Opal and Bill Thomas, Marion; two grandsons, Chad Hogston, Wilmington, Del., and Philip Wertz, Roanoke; four nieces and five nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. at Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Burke officiating. Interment will be Monday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. at the Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to the Atkins Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 214, Atkins, VA 24311.

Alton Brooks "Judge" Clear, age 93, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 1997 in Austin, Texas.
He was a native of Chatham Hill and had lived in Bristol prior to moving to Austin nine years ago.
He was a retired UMWA coal miner.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Mattie Clear, Broadford; one special great-niece, Susan Hisle; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Cahill officiating.

Bishop
John A. Bishop, age 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997 at his home in Glade Spring. He was a member of Chilhowie Baptist Church and a retired farmer. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Bela Widener Bishop, Glade Spring; three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and David Hill, Meadowview, Mary Alice and Donnie Roe, Glade Spring, and Ruth B. and Mike Anderson, Chilhowie; one son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Barbara Bishop, Glade Spring; his mother-in-law, Edith Widener; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at the Chilhowie Baptist Church with the Rev. Chuck Herrell officiating. Interment followed in the Bishop Cemetery.

Haga
Martha E. Haga, age 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Ms. Haga was born Oct. 7, 1914, the daughter of the late John A. and Gracie Holdaway Haga. She was retired from the E.I. Dupont Company in Martinsville.
She is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Beatrice Blevins of Bristol, and Dorothy and Alex Musser of Rural Retreat; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John A. Jr. and Mary Lundy Haga of Granite Falls, N.C., Eugene and Eva Ross Haga of Fenton, Mich., and Sherman and Joyce Thomas Haga of Atkins; a host of nieces and nephews; a special friend and caretaker, Mary Ann Trivett.
Graveside services will be held today, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Groseclose with the Rev. Steve Tilley officiating.

McCoy
Buford Hampton McCoy, age 78, of Calypso, N.C., formerly of Marion, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997 in North Carolina.
Mr. McCoy was born on April 15, 1919 to the late Henry Hampton McCoy and Minnie Bell Weisse McCoy in Rhodell, W.Va. He worked as a coal miner in West Virginia for 20 years. He was a member of the Peace Baptist Church in Calypso, N.C., and a member of the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atkins where he served on the board of elders.
Mr. McCoy was preceded in death by his wife, Melvina Lilly McCoy.
He is survived by two daughters, Delores Hayes, Goldsboro, N.C., and Juanita Kelly, Newportville, Penn.; two sons, Buford D. McCoy, Lindenwold, N.J., and Gary McCoy, Bangor, Maine; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. in the Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Lawn Cemetery.
