Thompson
Claude Lewis Thompson, age 84, of Saltville, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a veteran of World War II, a retired employee of Olin Corporation and a member of Calvary Bible Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pearl and Lewis Thompson; one son, Wiley Estle Thompson; one grandson, Robert Thompson; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hattie Thompson; one daughter, Mrs. James (Elsie) Feeney Jr., Radford; two sons, Otis Thompson and Claude B. Thompson, both of Saltville; five sisters, Nancy Taylor and Kate Collins, both of Chilhowie, Kathleen Surber and Imadell Jackson, both of Saltville, and Flossie Chapman, Anawalt, W.Va.; four brothers, Edd Thompson, Saltville, Ryburn Thompson, Glade Spring, Freal Thompson, Kegley, W.Va., and Fred Thompson, Inwood, W.Va.; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Robbins and the Rev. Sammy Johnston officiating. military graveside services followed in Mount Rose Cemetery.

DeBusk
John S. DeBusk, age 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997 at his home in Glade Spring.
He was a native of Washington County and was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Blevins DeBusk.
He was retired from American Electric Power Company, was a 50-year Mason in Bramwell Masonic Lodge, Bramwell, W.Va., and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce DeBusk, Richmond, and Maxine DeBusk Anderson, Northfork, W.Va.; four brothers, Preston DeBusk, Glade Spring, Jack DeBusk and Clarence DeBusk, both of Damascus, and Joe DeBusk, Cabot, Ark.; three sisters, Eula McVey, Tazewell, Mable Bowman, Bristol, and Reba Banner, Welch, W.Va.; three grandchildren; one aunt, Edith Widener, Glade Spring; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Pleasant View Baptist Church in Widener's Valley with the Rev. Roger Boyer and the Rev. Mahlon Wyatt officiating. Burial was in Widener's Valley Community Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Damascus Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 458, Damascus, VA 24236, or the Diabetic Association.

Dillard
Samuel F. "Ted" Dillard, age 74, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997 at his home in Marion.
Mr. Dillard was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School for 17 years. He was the son of the late Sheriff Sam and Nannie Snider Dillard. He graduated from Marion Senior High School and Emory & Henry College.
Mr. Dillard retired from the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland where he was business manager. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine Weddle Dillard.
He is survived by his wife, Louise D. Burke of Marion; one daughter, Carol Moats and husband Tom of Floyd; two stepdaughters, Peggy BeVille and husband Charles of Clearwater, Fla., and Ann Higgins and husband Roy of Louisville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Aaron Amos, Cody Amos, Arika Amos, Shiloh Amos, and Miriah Amos; four step-grandchildren, Eric BeVille, Donna BeVille, Kimberly Pierce and Roy Higgins II; one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at Ebenezer Lutheran Church with Pastor James H. Bangle officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Cemetery. William Harold "Shorty" Hayden, age 70, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie N. Hayden.
Survivors include three sons, Ronnie Hayden, Marion, Bobby Hayden, Glade Spring, and Jerry Hayden, of the home; five daughters, Sally Reed and Sandy O'Quinn, both of the home, Carol Stevenson, Marion, Robin Blevins, Glade Spring, and Tina Kegley, Atkins; his father, William A. Hayden, Saltville; two sisters, Christine Blue, Kansas, and Opal Hogston, Saltville; two brothers, Roy Hayden, Saltville, and Jimmy Hayden, Richlands; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 27, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Briggs and the Rev. Vernon Olinger officiating. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.

Virginia L. Jones, age 75, of Damascus, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997 in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon.
She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was the widow of LeRoy H. Jones.
Survivors include one daughter, LouAnn Jones, Damascus; three brothers, Charles Kenneth Richardson, Richmond, Robert Arnold Richardson, Damascus, and Vance Asbury Richardson, Lebanon; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held today, Sept. 27, at 11 a.m. in Mock Cemetery, Damascus, with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 26, Damascus, VA 24236.

Margie Rowena Lewis, age 85, of Glade Spring, died Monday, Sept. 22, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She was a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church and a member of Friendship Sunday School Class.
Survivors include two sons, James C. Lewis, Eutahville, S.C., and John Q. Lewis, Santee, S.C.; four daughters, Madeline Wagner, Richmond, Charline Manis, Buffalo Grove, Ill., Amanda "Dot" Whitley, Cloverdale, and Brenda Roop, Glade Spring; one brother, James Buchanan, Glade Spring; one sister-in-law, Ann Lewis, Glade Spring; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Brooks
Rush Braxton Brooks, age 86, died Monday, Sept. 29, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Brooks was a native of Grayson County and lived most of his life in Smyth County. He worked in the mines in West Virginia for over 20 years and retired from the Brunswick Corporation in Marion.
He was a member of the Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Fannie Evelyn Brooks, and one son Darrell Brooks.
Survivors include his wife, Addie Brooks, Marion; three daughters, Joyce Eberle, Dallas, Texas, Judy Birdwell, Hampton, and Christine Terry, Marion; two sons, Ronald Brooks and Steve Brooks, both of Marion; two sisters, Josie
Smith and Ethel Smith, both of Marion; 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Neitch and the Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Interment will follow in the Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home and any time at the residence.

Mary Linda Wilson Currin, age 78, widow of Lloyd E. Currin, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Wilson Currin of Richmond, and Amanda Jane Currin of Eden, N.C.; one sister, Alberta Grace of Clinton, Tenn.; one brother, Shields Wilson of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Marion with the Rev. Jim Pollock officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
