Harry "Butch" McBride
Harry "Butch" McBride had been busy preparing Marion Middle School's new library. But the librarian will not get to see students enjoy the state-of-the-art library.
McBride, 51, died in an automobile accident in Sullivan County, Tenn., Saturday evening, June 28.
His wife, Juanita L. McBride, remains hospitalized at
Johnson City Medical Center. His son, Shane, a student at Abingdon High School, flew home from Europe, cutting short a foreign language studies trip with schoolmates.
"My first thoughts on hearing the news was that it's such a shame, the loss, obviously, of an experienced teacher," said Dr. Marvin Winters, school division superintendent. Winters lamented McBride's never seeing the new library in use.
"We are just finishing the new library and the addition to Marion Middle School. The last time I saw him he was moving boxes. It's a shame he did not get to work in the new library," Winters said.
McBride was a native of Pennsylvania, a graduate of California State College in Pennsylvania and East Tennessee State University. He earned his Master's degree from the University of North Carolina - Greensboro. During his four-year career in the United States Air Force, McBride served in Guam. He was librarian at the middle school for 19 years, Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop 70, member of the District Boy Scout Committee, member of the Abingdon High School Band Boosters Equipment Crew and a helper with Little League.
His father was the late John E. McBride.
Juanita McBride is a Washington County teacher. The McBride home is in Abingdon.
Bill Pugh, Marion Middle School principal, said, "We're kind of stunned. We've built a new library for him but we won't have him."
Pugh remembers McBride as cooperative and friendly.
"He was a whale of a nice person. He would do anything you asked," Pugh said.
According to early reports the accident occurred as the McBrides returned from seeing their son leave for Europe at Tri-Cities Regional Airport. Pugh said the young McBride left the United States on Wednesday, June 25. He returned Sunday, June 29.
