Sweat
Helen Elaine (Heath) Sweat, age 63, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 at her home in Gaithersburg, Md. She was the widow of Charles Alexander Sweat. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Elaine Sweat.
She was a native of Clinchburg and a member of the Clarksburg Baptist Church. She retired from the Montgomery County Public School System after years of service in administration and was employed as a Montgomery County Police Officer.
She was a graduate of North Valley High School and attended James Madison University .
Survivors include one son, John W. Sweat, Gaithersburg, Md.; one daughter, Anna (Sweat) Dempster, Brunswick, Md.; three sisters, Victoria Cuddy, Kingsport, Tenn., Evelyn Cardwell and Lois Chapman, both of Saltville; three brothers, W.T. Heath, Bristol, J.C. Heath, Saltville, and Leon Heath, Marion; four grandchildren: Hugh Thomas Dempster and Delaine Elizabeth Dempster, both of Brunswick, Md., and Jemma Elaine Sweat and John Joseph Sweat, both of Burtonsville, Md.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 5, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with burial in the
Johnson Family Cemetery.

Thomas
Hurthel Angelo Thomas, age 93, of Rich Valley, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was a member of Goodman's Chapel and was a self-employed farmer for many years. He was preceded in death by two children, Dewey Thomas and Ituria Davidson.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Buchanan Thomas; three granddaughters, Linda Eller, Betty Sue Griffey and Carolyn Pauley; several nieces and nephews; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in D.R. Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Kincheloe officiating. Burial was in Ridgedale Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Saltville Rescue Squad Blackhills Substation.

Allison
Charles Allison, age 67, of Wichita, Kansas, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Allison; one son, Ralph Allison, Wichita, Kansas; two brothers, Junior Allison and Jiggs Allison, both of Saltville; four sisters, Mae Pickle, Marion, Arvela Schwartz, Glade Spring, Freida Ames and Peggy Mitchell, both of Cleveland; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. in Wichita, Kansas. The family will receive friends from 1-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Old Mission Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Hospice, 313 W. Market St., Wichita, Kansas 67202.

Gilbert
Virgie Francis Gilbert, age 79, of Damascus, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997 at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport, Tenn.
She was a native of
Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Washington County most of her life. She was a member of Stateline Baptist Church, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.
She is survived by two sisters, Ruby
Williams and Bertha Eula Gilbert, both of Damascus; one niece, Joan McCallister, Chilhowie; two nephews, Tim Williams, Damascus, and David Williams, Mountain City, Tenn.
Funeral services were conducted at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, in
Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Derl H. McCloud and the Rev. Mike Bowers officiating. Committal service and interment was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Stateline Cemetery in Laurel Bloomery, Tenn. Memorial donations may be made to the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. McClellan
William Gladston McClellan, age 87, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Scott County and retired from the Water Filtration Department of the Tennessee Eastman Company in 1974 after 32 years of service.
He was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Roller McClellan; one daughter, Geraldine Garner, Maryville, Tenn.; two sons, Wallace McClellan, Bristol, Tenn., and Wendell McClellan, Marion; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Nell Frazier, Maye Fraysier, Betty
Carter and Colleen Flanary; one brother, Harry N. McClellan.
Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in Gate City Funeral Home with the Rev. Josh Sanders and the Rev. Mark Flynn officiating. Graveside services will be held today, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. in Holston View Cemetery, Weber City.

Dempsey
Brown Odham Sr., age 65, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
Mr. Odham was a retired farmer and a lifelong resident of Smyth County. He was a member of the Greenwood United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Anna Laura Odham; three children, William C. Odham, Marion R. Odham, and Anita L. Odham; one brother, John P. Odham.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Odham; four sons, Dempsey B. Odham Jr., John Michael Odham, Ralph Preston Odham, all of Marion, and James Robert Odham and wife Mary, Castlewood; one daughter, Karen Buchanan, Marion; one brother, Bill Odham, Marion; eight grandchildren: W.C. Odham, Bryan Odham, Desiera Odham, Megan Buchanan, Seth Guyer, Jennifer Guyer, James Albert Utley, and Joseph Yeary; one adopted granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Odham.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carol Ferguson and the Rev. Paul
Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Paul
Kem A. Paul, age 36, of Citrus Heights, Calif., formerly of Saltville, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 1997.
Survivors include his mother, Darlene S. Paul, Citrus Heights, Calif.; his father, Fred W. Paul, Citrus Heights, Calif.; two sisters, Graham Ellen Nipper, Marion, and Lisa Caderberg, Citrus Heights, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, in McCready United Methodist Church, Saltville, with the Rev. Calvin Tabor officiating.

Barnitz
Charles Barnitz Jr., age 90, of Wytheville, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 1997 in the Birdmont Health Care Center. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Florence Mildred Warthen Barnitz.
Mr. Barnitz was born Sept. 4, 1906 in Wytheville, the son of Charles Henry Barnitz and Frances Lawrence Pendleton Barnitz. He attended Wytheville public schools; the private school of the Misses Shortt in Wytheville; the Millersburg military Institute in Millersburg, Ky.; and Virginia military Institute in Lexington.
He first worked on highway construction with Pendleton Construction Co., Inc. Later he was employed by the City of Wytheville as Town Clerk and Commissioner of the Revenue. In 1941, after the Radford Ordnance Works plant was opened for the production of powder for use in World War II, he went to work for the Hercules Powder Plant. He retired from there in 1971.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and had served on the vestry. He was a member of the Wytheville Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member of the Wythe County Rescue Squad Inc. He was a member and past master of the Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and past district deputy of District 42. He was past high priest of the Wythe Chapter of Royal Arch Masons No. 51.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Barnitz and Charles "Chuck" Hoelzel of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Alexander and Kelley Barnitz of Magdelena, N.M., and William Stewart "Bill" Barnitz of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. at the St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Peter Ouzts officiating. Interment followed in the East End Cemetery. Wytheville Masonic Lodge No. 82 A.F. & A.M. conducted a memorial service Friday, Feb. 7. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those who prefer may make memorials to the Wythe County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 389, Wytheville, VA 24382.
