Fleming
Elizabeth C. Fleming, age 78, of Clemmons, N.C., died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999 at Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Mrs. Fleming was a native of Loudon, Tenn., and moved to Chilhowie in 1942 and later to Damascus in 1977. She had resided in Clemmons since 1993.
Mrs. Fleming had attended the First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the widow of Allen F. Fleming.
She is survived by two daughters, Brenda Aznavour of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Nellie Mills of Clemmons, N.C.; two sisters, Ruth Roop of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Martha Russell of Harrison, Tenn.; one brother, Floyd Craig of Jefferson City, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Mills Boser, John Mills III, and Ronald Radford; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. in
Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Sigmon and the Rev. Robert Thornton officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park.

Gray
Billie A. Gray, age 80, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999 at her home in Damascus.
Mrs. Gray was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a retired school teacher with Washington County public schools for over 30 years and her many interests included poetry and gardening.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus and attended the Sinking Springs Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Gray was preceded in death by her first husband, Arthur Frank Venable, and by a sister, Ellen Emmert.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Edward Gray Sr.; one daughter, Sarah Wood of Damascus; one son, Sam Venable of Virginia Beach; three stepdaughters, Eliza Jo Wright of Kilmarnock, Mary Helen
Jones of Charlotte, N.C., and Rose Ellen Hudson of Abingdon; one stepson, Charles E. Gray Jr., Abingdon; one sister, Nannie Wright, Damascus; one brother, Ben Adams of Damascus; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, in the First Baptist Church in Damascus with the Rev. Don Lasley, the Rev. E.W. Ely and the Rev. Helen Phillips officiating. The committal service and interment was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Sunset Memorial Park.

Hayes
Michael Sean Hayes, age 26, of Konnarock, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999.
Mr. Hayes was a native of Washington County and had lived in Walterboro, S.C., for eight years before moving to Damascus in 1989. He graduated from Holston High School in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Sean Hayes, of the home; his mother, Cindy Gibbs of Roanoke; his father, Jerry Hayes of Damascus; one sister, Jessica Blackburn of Meadowview; one brother, Joshua Hayes of Damascus; his maternal grandfather, Cecil McAllister of Damascus; his paternal grandparents, Clarence and Beryl Hayes of Damascus; a special girlfriend, Stephanie Sluder of Damascus.
Funeral services were private.

Trent
Vernie William "Bill" Trent, age 75, of Damascus, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999 in Abingdon Manor Home for the Aged in Abingdon.
Mr. Trent was a lifelong resident of Damascus and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include four sisters, Laura "Polly" Trent of Meadowview, Mattie Heath of Glade Spring, Rebecca Riffey of Mountain City, Tenn., and Wilma Jean Sturgill of Damascus; one brother, Jim Trent of Meadowview; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the Wright's Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Don Lasley officiating.

Combs
Henry Pete Combs Sr., age 71, died Friday, April 30, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mr. Combs was preceded in death by his first wife, Lola Gentry Combs. He retired from Rose Lawn Cemetery and Virginia Monument Company with 31 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Combs of Marion; four daughters, Ruth Ann Adkins of Amelia, Tammy Lee Craighead of Roanoke, Mary Elizabeth Norman and Kimberly Combs, both of Marion; three sons, Robert Eugene Combs Sr., Henry Pete Combs Jr., and Richard Wayne Combs, all of Marion; two stepsons, Walter Bridgeman and Robert Thomas, both of Marion; one brother, Grover Combs of Joppa, Md.; several half-brothers and half-sisters including Connie
Smith of Maryland; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Seaver-
Brown Chapel with the Rev. Curtis Adkins and the Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Burial followed in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

Cregger
Melvin S. Cregger, age 85, of Rich Valley, died Sunday, May 2, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital
Mr. Cregger was preceded in death by his wife Betty and an infant son, Melvin Jr.
Surviving are two daughters, Claudine Tibbs, Ceres, and Gussie Campbell, Marion; four grandchildren, Joey Tibbs, Sheila Campbell, Rick Campbell, and Betty Cassell; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Casper Cregger, Nebo; one sister, Claire Sullivan, Hemet, Calif.
Funeral services will be held today, May 5, at 11 a.m. in the Goodwill Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hutton officiating. Burial will follow in the Cregger Family Cemetery.

Dickey
Franklin Edward Dickey, age 64, of Damascus, died Friday, April 30, 1999 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Dickey was a resident of Grundy before moving to Washington County four years ago. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran
Surviving are two daughters, Patty Lester and Angie Counts, both of Abingdon; four sons, William "Huey" Dickey of Damascus, David Dickey of Columbus, Ga., Chris Dickey of Bristol, and Chad Dickey of Abingdon; one sister, Ruby Peters of Staunton; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were conducted Monday, May 3, at 2 p.m. in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill with Pastor Jimmy Davidson and the Rev. Jason Nuley officiating.

Finley
James "Jim" Samuel Finley, age 70, of the Middle Fork Community in Whitetop, died Friday, April 30, 1999 at his home.
Mr. Finley was born Aug. 26, 1928 in Whitetop, the son of John Harrison and Susie Blevins Finley.
Surviving are his wife, Artie Finley, of the home; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Wayne and Debbie Finley, Thomasville, N.C., Jesse Finley, Mike Finley, both of Whitetop, and Jimmy and Melissa Finley, Lansing, N.C.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sue Miller, and Brenda and Tim Walls, all of Whitetop; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Marie McDaniel, Konnarock, and Pearl and George Mullins, Lenoir, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in Helton Valley Baptist Church in Whitetop with the Rev. Rex Hall, the Rev. T.A. Pennington and the Rev. Wayne Roark officiating. Interment was in the Walls Cemetery.

Carol Dalton Wymer, age 56, of Atkins, died Friday, April 30, 1999 in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Wymer was employed with Virginia House Furniture with 19 years of service.
She is survived by her husband, Johnny H. Wymer of Atkins; one son, Allen J. Dalton of Marion; one stepdaughter, Nina Michelle Wymer of Maryland; one stepson, Johnny A. Wymer of Atkins; one sister, Jean Havens of Marion; three brothers, Jack Dalton, Garnett Dalton and James Dalton, all of Marion; two step-grandchildren.
