GRUNDY -- America Ethel Mitchell, 77, of Route 4, died Monday, May 29, 2000. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of Leck and Tracy Deel, and was the widow of Basil Mitchell. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Regular Baptist Church for 49 years. Surviving are four daughters, Emil Jean Deel of Harman, Va. and Emma Gay Compton, Ledna Fern Woods and Marcella Owens, all of Prater, Va.; five sons, William Harold Mitchell, Ricky Ferrell Mitchell and Charlie Creed Mitchell, all of Prater, James Carl Mitchell of Dismal, Va., and Michael Stanford Mitchell of Hurley, Va.; a sister, Lillie May Breeding of Richlands; three brothers, Virgil Deel of Richlands, Ervin Deel of Prater and Earl Deel of Warren, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church by Haysi Funeral Home. Elders Freddie Ramey, David O'Quinn and Eddie Newsome will officiate. Burial will be in Mitchell Family Cemetery in Prater. Mrs. Mitchell was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lorrine Mitchell; and a grandson, Brian Mitchell. Pallbearers will be Jeff Bailey, Matthew Woods, Adam Deel, Johnny Fuller, Travis Mitchell, Jason Mitchell, Nathan Mitchell, Aaron Deel, Sabian Deel and Brian Hargett. VANSANT, Va. -- Stella M. Phipps, 84, died Monday, May 29, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Taze and Mary Owens Viers. Owens of Moncks Corner, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Janice Anderson of Grundy and Jean Howell and Phyliss Pruitt, both of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Cecil Viers of Vansant; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Vansant Baptist Church by Grundy Funeral Home. The Rev. Stan Parris will officiate. The body will be taken to the church at 9 a.m. Wednesday to await the funeral hour at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Greenhill Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Ethel Clevinger Looney Swanson
ORACLE, Ariz. -- Ethel Clevinger Looney Swanson, 88, formerly of Buchanan County, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at home. She was born in Buchanan County, a daughter of the late Sylvester and Victoria Davis Clevinger, and moved to Miami in 1947. While living in the Grundy area, she was a member of Grundy Church of Christ. She was a retired employee of Central Bank of Miami with 21 years of service. After her retirement in 1982, she moved to Oracle and was a member of Oracle Union Church. Surviving are her husband, Clinton H. Swanson; a son, Bobby Gene Looney of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Lonnie Clevinger of Maxie, Va.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Willard Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. Mrs. Swanson was also preceded in death by a son, Benny Charles Looney; a sister, Onie Brown; and four brothers, Lum, Bob, Kenneth and Rans Clevinger. Among survivors are daughters-in-law, Eva Looney of Tucson and Mrs. Benny (Clara) Looney of Oracle. Pallbearers will be Sonny Clevinger, John Clevinger, David Ratliff, Everett Delaney, David Delaney, Charlie Edwards and Donald Looney. ABINGDON -- Gary Wayne Taylor, 48, died Friday, June 2, 2000, from injuries sustained in a work-related accident. He was born in Grundy, a son of Pauline Garrett Taylor of Grundy and the late Hayse Taylor. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was employed as a foreman for Motivation Coal. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Donna Taylor of Abingdon; a son, Nathan Garrett Taylor of Abingdon; two brothers, Wesley Frank Taylor of Bristol Tennessee and Randy Dean Taylor of Grundy; and a sister, Deborah T. Dotson of Grundy. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 5 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Michael Trent and Michael McCoy will officiate. Entombment will be in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Brad McCoy, Scotty McCoy, Greg Horn, Joe Hicks, Raymond Earles and Chad Owens. PAW PAW, Ky. -- Arthur Dotson, 76, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy, Va. He was born in Pike County, Ky., a son of the late Willie and Rose Dotson, and was a lifelong resident of the Paw Paw area. He was a disabled coal miner. Surviving are his wife, Lula Mae Estep Dotson; two daughters, Margaret D. Stiltner of Big Rock, Va., and Carol D. Wolford of Hurley, Va.; seven sons, Bill Dotson, Paul Dotson, Larry Dotson, Edd Dotson and Harold Dotson, all of Paw Paw, Dale Dotson of Rosedale, Va., and Earnel Dotson of Hurley; two sisters, Earmel Estep and Cora Cantrell, both of Hurley; two brothers, Bill Dotson and Earl Dotson, both of Paw Paw; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at noon in Mill Fork Freewill Baptist Church in Paw Paw by Grundy Funeral Home. The Revs. Michael Casey and Britt Jackson will officiate. Burial will be in Dotson Cemetery in Paw Paw. Mr. Dotson was also preceded in death by a daughter, Edith Dotson; a sister, Opal Allison; and six brothers, Clell, Earny, Flem, Everett, Anthony and George Dotson. ABINGDON -- James William Cole, 72, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at home. He was born in Bearwallow near Jewell Ridge in Buchanan County, a son of the late Steward J. and Loma Nelson Cole. He was a retired coal miner, formerly employed by Cole and White Coal Co. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Casey Short VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV. He was a member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge 260 and the Kazim Shrine Temple. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Taylor Cole; four sons, James Cole Jr. of Lafayette, La., Gerald Stanley Cole and Benjaman Scott Cole, both of Abingdon, and John Barry Cole of Christiansburg, Va.; two daughters, Susan Deloris Hall of Fayetteville, N.C., and Charlotte Vineyard of Abileen, Texas; three brothers, Curt Cole of Jewell Ridge, Bob Cole of Bearwallow and Aldie Cole of Wintersville, Ohio; two sisters, Wanda Keen of Cedar Bluff and Ilene Holt of La Follette, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. GRUNDY -- Richard Oakley Hamilton, 80, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000. He was born in Pike County, Ky., a son of Gerimah Ward Hamilton Coleman of Grundy and the late Oakley Haney Hamilton. He had lived in Buchanan County for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a graduate of Oakland, Calif., High School and was a retired engineer for the water works in Oakland. Surviving, besides his mother, are a daughter, Barbara LeSuer of Alala Vista, Calif.; three sisters, Opal Whitt and Bonnie Jean Childress, both of Grundy, and Frances Lester of Roanoke; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock, Va. The Rev. Bob Miller will officiate. Mr. Hamilton was also preceded in death by four sons. Pallbearers will be friends. There will be no visitation in Grundy Funeral Home. BIG ROCK, Va. -- Bernard Alden "Red" Kennedy, 60, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital. He was born in Wise County, Va., a son of the late John and Areba Ann Skeens Kennedy. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. He was a member of the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church, a retired coal miner employed with Kentland Elkhorn Coal Co. and a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was the widower of Hazel Marie Shortt Kennedy. Surviving are a daughter, Anna Wright of Big Rock; four sons, Jimmy Kennedy, Jeffrey Kennedy and Bradley Kennedy, all of Big Rock, and John David Kennedy of Grundy; two sisters, Yuvonne Berglowe of Big Rock and Helen White of Hico, W.Va.; a brother, Vernon Kennedy of Pembroke, Va.; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jimmy Kerr, Britt Jackson and E.C. Honaker will officiate. Mr. Baldwin, 78, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at home. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., a son of the late G.C. and Mae Osborne Baldwin, both Buchanan County natives. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Whitewood Fire Department, the Whitewood Lions Club and the House of Prayer at Jewell Valley. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Nila Griffith Baldwin; two daughters, Emma Loretta Bradley of Richlands and Mrs. Troy (Brenda) Adams of Jewell Valley; a son, the Rev. Rick C. Baldwin of Tampa, Fla.; four sisters, Florine Ferrell of Richlands and Marie Charles, Nancy Baldwin and Mrs. Rolley (Nell) Campbell, all of Oakwood, Va.; two grandsons; three granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Baldwin was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Among survivors are daughter-in-law Debi Baldwin of Tampa; grandsons Eddie Adams and wife Vanessa of Laurel Creek, Va. and Joshua Baldwin of Tampa; three granddaughters, Shannon Roche and husband Steve, and Alesha Baldwin, all of Tampa, and Kimberly N.
