Mrs. Sue Jewell Messick
RICHLANDS, Va. -- Mrs. Sue Jewell Messick, 61, of 222 Philpot St., died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Whitewood, Va., and was a daughter of the late Elbert C. and Agnes M. Brown Jewell Sr., both Buchanan County natives. She was a graduate and valedictorian of the Class of 1956 at Whitewood High School and received her business degree from Emory & Henry College at Emory, Va. She was a former employee of Richlands National Bank and Southwest Virginia Community College. She had made her home in the Richlands area the past 42 years and attended Richlands First Assembly of God Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Michelle Messick and one sister, Lenore Ann Jewell. Survivors are: one son, William F. "Billy" Messick Jr. of the home; one sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. Clifton R. (Kay) Jewell McPeak of Richlands; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. Shelby Jewell and wife, JoAnn of Whitewood, Mr. Ronnie D. Jewell and wife, Charlotte of Pembroke, Va., and Mr. Ebby Jewell and wife, Teresa of Tazewell, Va.; two special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Jim (Pat) Ray, Mrs. John (Shirley) Fagan, Mr. Sam Messick and Mr. Glenn Messick. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Buddy Hearld officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Nephews and first cousins will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Clyde Murphy Sr.
MAXIE, Va. -- Clyde Murphy Sr., 73 years of age, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born at Hatfield, W.Va., he was a son of the late Wess and Alice Adkins Murphy. He had been a resident of Buchanan County most of his life, a member of Harman Holiness Church and was a retired coal miner. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Edith White Murphy, June 17, 1992. He is survived by three daughters, Brenda Rice and husband, David, Grundy, Va., Patsy Belcher and husband, Jerry, Maxie, Va., and Linda Elswick and husband, Brady, Lieele Mountain, S.C.; one son, Clyde Murphy Jr. and wife Brenda, Keen Mountain, Va.; and special friend, Opal Baker, Maxie. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Marie Rose. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Harman Holiness Church, Harman, Va., with Revs. Danny Hess, Rudolph Sesco and Darrell Davis officiating with burial to follow in the Cantrell Cemetery on Poplar Creek, Route 2, Grundy, Va. Friends may call at Harman Holiness Church Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. Active pallbearers will be David Blankenship, Mark Blankenship, Nicky Belcher, Rick Rose, Eddie Bailey, Larry Rose, Michael Murphy, Roy Street, Tim Dotson and Mark Lester. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. V. Modi, Dr. Kalis Modi, James Burks and nurses and staff of Buchanan General Hospital. There will be services at the church Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

James I. Evans
NILES, Ill. -- James I. Evans, 60, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, in the Regency Nursing Center following an extended illness. Born at Roseann, Va., he was a son of the late Troy and Orpha Kitemiller Evans. Survivors include: one brother, Charles Evans, Benton, Ky. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va., with Rev. James Chapman and Rev. Junior Pack officiating with burial following in Mountain Valley Memorial Park. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Active pallbearers will be friends. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Diana Faye Wagner Matney
GRUNDY, Va. -- Diana Faye Wagner Matney, 49, of the Slate Creek area, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness. Born at Paynesville, W.Va., she was a daughter of Mrs. Peggy Mullins Wagner, War, W.Va., and the late Carl Wagner. She had been a resident of Buchanan County several years, a graduate of Iaeger High School and a member of Tookland Pentecostal Church. She was a retired employee of Sears Roebuck and Company with 19 years of service. Mrs. Matney was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Lee Matney, Nov. 4, 2000. Survivors include four sisters: Betty Blankenship and husband, Alda, Tulsa, Okla.; Wilma Thomas and husband, Wayne, Grundy; Carol Wagner, Burbank, Calif.; and Brenda Ward and husband, Raymond, Tazewell, Va.; three brothers, Kennith Wagner and wife, Linda, Tazewell, Va.; Tommy Wagner and wife, Pam, Patrick Springs, Va.; and Billys Wagner and wife, Genee, Salisbury, N.C. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Wilson and Rev. Buford Smith officiating with burial to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va. Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 6 p.m. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Thomas, Raymond Ward, Alda Blankenship, Greg Davidson, Brian Lockhart, Jonathan Wagner, Keith Clifton and Roy Mullins. Mr. Martin Eugene "Whitie" Driver
Mr. Martin Eugene "Whitie" Driver, 72, of Raven, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in a Kingsport, Tenn., hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Buchanan County, Va., and was a son of Mrs. Mattie Puckett Driver Cordle of Doran, Va., and the late Mr. Thomas Martin Driver. He had made his home in the Raven area the past 23 years, was a disabled U.S. Air Force veteran and was a member of the Richlands Loyal Order of Moose. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Charlie Cordle; one sister, Helen Lambert; and one brother, Russell Cordle. Survivors in addition to his mother are: his wife: Mrs. Jearl Vance Driver; two daughters: Mrs. Ricky (Rhonda) Brown of Richlands, Va., and Miss Sherry Mosley of Raven; two sisters: Mrs. Betty Davis of Doran and Mrs. Shelia French of Lockport, N.Y.; three brothers: Mr. William Cordle of Tanawanda, N.Y., Mr. Bobby Cordle of Glade Spring, Va., and Mr. Jackie Cordle of Doran; three grandchildren: Brandon Mosley, Tracie Brown and Mercedes Brown. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Porter Cordle and Rev. Rick Whitt officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Brandon Mosley, Darrell Hess, Robert Salyers, Jeff Cordle, Bobby Davis and James Cline. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 of Richlands and the Disabled American Veteran Tazewell County Chapter 31 will conduct military graveside rites. Lillian Ruth Wallace Altizer
Lillian Ruth Wallace Altizer, 52 years of age, of the Home Creek section of Grundy, Va., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in the Johnson City Medical Center from a long illness. Born in Buchanan County on July 5, 1948, she was the daughter of Alta Smith Wallace of Grundy, Va., and the late Robert Wallace. She was a member of the Harman Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star at Freeburn, Ky. She was formerly employed as a secretary for Harman Mining Corp. She was a loving mother and enjoyed making crafts. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Steve Wallace and Ralph Wallace. In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband: Leon Altizer of Grundy, Va.; two sons: Lee David Altizer of Abingdon, Va., and William (Bill) Jerome Altizer of Grundy, Va.; and two daughters; Tina Marie Lyons of Orange Park, Fla., and Tressa Leona Linton of Middlesburg, Fla. She was also survived by six grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Willard Owens and Bill Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Active pallbearers will be: Delmer Hall, Tommy Hall, Kenneth Hall, Donnie Hall, Gary Coleman and David Clevinger. Honorary pallbearers will be: Ronald Coleman, David Scammell, Roger Vandyke and the elders and deacons of the Harman Memorial Baptist Church. The family of Lillian Ruth Wallace Altizer is being served by the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

Marie Magdalene Deel Church
Marie Magdalene Deel Church, 54 years of age, of Maxie, Va., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Columbia Clinch Valley Medical Center along with her husband, Thomas Ray Church, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Route \460 near Cedar Bluff, Va. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Ethel Blankenship Deel. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Grundy Senior High School Class of 1964 and attended Southwest Virginia Community College. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and was a homemaker. Mrs. Church is survived by 1 daughter: Lisa Marie Church, Maxie, Va.; 1 son: Thomas Jason Church, Maxie, Va.; 2 sisters: Mrs. Ival Lockhart, Harman, Va., and Mrs. Beulah Hibbitts, Manassas, Va.; 3 brothers: Raymond Deel, Harman, Va., Johnny Deel, Harman, Va., and Frankie Deel, Harman, Va.; and 1 grandson: Andrew Kelly Craft, Maxie,, Va. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Steven R. Griffith; and 1 sister, Verlene Deel. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Old Regular Baptist Church \1, on Poplar Creek, Route \2, Grundy, Va., with Elders Billy Campbell, Jim Blankenship, Toby Bailey and Arnold Bailey officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. Active pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be: Frank OQuinn, Mattie Mullins, Dorothy Whited, Grover Dales, Tonnie Dales, aunts and uncles. There will be a service at the church Friday evening at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

Thomas Ray Church, 54 years of age, of Maxie, Va., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Columbia Clinch Valley Medical Center along with his wife, Marie Magdalene Deel Church, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Route \460 near Cedar Bluff, Va. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Johnny T. and Lydia Ann Raines Church. He was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, a member of the Old Regular Baptist Church and an ordained minister. He was a retired employee of Harman Mining Company and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7025. Mr. Church is survived by: 2 daughters: Lisa Marie Church, Maxie, Va., and Henrietta Susan Skeens, Abingdon, Va.; 1 son: Thomas Jason Church, Maxie, Va.; 5 sisters: Dana Rose Swicker, Laurel, Md., Juanita Smith, Pell City, Ala., Mary Jo Hamrick, Pell City, Ala., Pearl Williams, Birmingham, Ala., and Betty Wilson, Centerville, Ala.; 5 brothers: Dexter Church, Green Cove Springs, Fla., John P. Lloyd Allen Lockhart
Lloyd Allen Lockhart, 44, of Davenport, Va., passed away Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born on Oct. 16, 1956, in Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of Mrs. Elene Ray Phillips of Honaker and the late Burt Lockhart. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, Va., and was a disabled equipment operator. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Violet Presley of Lebanon, Va., and Gaynelle Wilson of Council, Va.; his stepfather, Ralph Phillips of Honaker; one half-sister, Brenda Phillips of Abingdon, Va.; two brothers, Bradley Lockhart of Rosedale, Va., and Lonnie Lockhart of Grundy, Va.; two stepbrothers, Ralph Phillips of Bristol Virginia, and Tim Phillips of Honaker, Va.; and his aunt, Euna Lockhart of Davenport, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Swamp Church on Hurricane Creek at Davenport, Va., with Rev. Andy Presley, Rev. Hershel Helton and Rev. Benny Ratliff officiating. Interment will follow in the Lockhart Family Cemetery on Hurricane Creek. Pallbearers will be Earl Barton, Brian Owens, Mike Breeding, Roger Hale, Benny Ratliff, Bill Keen and Jeffrey Ray. Ted Carl Meadows
STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -- Ted Carl Meadows, 54, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge. He was born in Buchanan County, a son of Edna Stacy Meadows of Hurley, Va., and the late Ayers Meadows. He was of the Baptist faith, attended the Unity Baptist Church and was a graduate of Hurley High School. He was employed by Cable Consultants as a telecommunications technician. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Pat Hill Meadows of Atlanta; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Sprague and Beverly Sprague, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; a son, Danny C. Meadows of Stockbridge; seven sisters, Jean Justus and Sue Keen, both of Hurley, Va., Judi Horn of Grundy, Va., Sandy Estep of Stockbridge, Wanda Rowlette of Greenville, Ga., Patti Taylor of Abingdon and Thelma Belcher of Bland, Va.; three brothers, Ayers Randall Meadows of Greenville, Paul Meadows of Springfield, Ohio, and Benny Mitchell of Phoenix, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy. Evangelist Michael Trent will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. Mr. Meadows was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Wyatt and Rose Meadows and Samuel and Leventhia Stacy. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel.

Jennings Yates
GRUNDY -- Jennings Yates, 55, of the Sunset Hollow section of Route 4, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a son of Myrtle Faye Boyd Yates of Prater, Va., and the late Frenchman Yates. He attended Coleman Methodist Church, was an employee of Misty Bee Coal Co. and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Allene Smith Yates; a daughter, Rebecca Y. Childress of Glade Spring; a son, Jennings David Yates of Grundy; four sisters, Christine White of Oakwood, Va., Hattie Prater of Hamilton, Ohio, Roxie Fain of Mocksville, N.C., and Rebal Keen of Grundy; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Darrel Thacker and Gordon McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Coleman and Mitchell Cemetery, near the residence on Sunset Hollow, near Prater. Among survivors are a son-in-law, Scott Childress of Glade Spring; a daughter-in-law, Valorie Yates of Grundy; and grandchildren, Stephanie Yates Samuel Yates and Matthew Childress. Pallbearers will be employees of Misty Bee Coal Co. Friends may call at 6 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel, where services will be held at 7 p.m. Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
