Ann S. Moore 84
Ann S. Moore, 84, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of King George County, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee.
Mrs. Moore was the widow of George E. Moore and the former widow of Albert R. Shackelford.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jean Psomas, of Kissimmee; a daughter-in-law, Carol Shackelford of Alexandria; seven grandchildren, Barbara Ann Pugh, Sanford, Fla., David Pugh of Scranton, Penn., James A. Pugh of St. Petersburg, Fla., Elaine Jennings of Palmetto, Fla., Sharen Sheehan of Springfield, Carrie Shackelford of Black Mountain, S.C., and Becki and Christopher Duckwall of Dunkirk, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by three step-daughters, Jean M. Graham of King George, Peggy A. Daigle of Boca Raton, Fla., and Nancy L. Neumayer of Homestead, Fla.; nine step-grandchildren; and 15 step-greatgrandchildren.
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by a son, Roderick A. Shackelford.
Services were private.
Buddy Miller 52
Donald "Buddy" Miller, 52, of King George County died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma F. Miller of the home; a daughter, Tambra Miller of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a stepdaughter, Billie Jean Cooper of Midland; two stepsons, Robert Cooper and Coy Cooper, both of King George; two sisters, Louise Whitfield of King George and Donna Rose of Culpeper County; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 1, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in King George. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Milton Branch officiated.
Helen M. Harris 77
Helen M. Harris, 77, of King George County died at her home Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, after a lengthy illness. Among her survivors is a daughter, Cindy Scott of King George, and a son, Gary Harris of Fredericksburg. A funeral was held Thursday, Jan. 30, at Groff Funeral Home in Sandusky, Ohio. Thomas Edison Willis 82
Thomas Edison Willis, 82, of Montross died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital.
A funeral was held Saturday, Jan. 25, at Siloam Baptist Church in Montross. Burial was in Morning Star Church cemetery.

Tony Merkley 30
Tony Merkley, 30, of King George County died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, in Stafford County.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Thomas and Melinda O'Connell of Ruther Glen; two daughters, Tiffany and Crystal Merkley; his fiancee, Sherrae Bartley of King George; one brother, Brian Merkley of Fredericksburg; three sisters, Christina Merkley of Stafford, Samantha Merkley of King George and Jessica O'Connell of Fredericksburg; and two nieces, Sarah and Destiny Merkley.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Charles Laposata 91
Charles Laposata, 91, of Apopka, Fla., died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at Florida Nursing Center. He was the father of Wendell Laposata of King George County.
Mr. Laposata was the widower of Bessie Brehm Laposata.
Born May 5, 1911, in Beaverdale, Pa., he lived in Johnstown, Pa., and moved to Florida in 1984. Mr. Laposata had retired from Anderson Paper Company, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren in Johnstown for over 60 years.
In addition to his son of King George, Mr. Laposata is survived by a daughter, Frances Jane Fancher of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; his fraternal twin, Ida L. Simpson of Johnstown; a brother, Vincent Laposata of Altoona, Pa.; a granddaughter, Wendy Ann Laposata of Lancaster, Pa.; three other grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Friday, Jan. 10, at Oakland Park Cemetery in Lake Mary, Fla. Pastor Tom Hensley officiated. Mr. Laposata's nephew, Joseph S. Laposata, of Melbourne, Fla., delivered the eulogy.

Pauline Efford Delano 92
Pauline Efford Delano of Oldhams in Westmoreland County died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003.
She was born at Farnham in Richmond County Dec. 1, 1911, the only daughter of John Samuel and Agnes Maria Harrison Efford. She married Francis Gawen Delano of Oldhams on June 2,1934, at her home at Farnham.
A short time later, they moved to her husband's birthplace, Ingledew, and she lived there for almost 70 years.
Mrs. Delano was a 1928 graduate of Farnham High School and received her bachelor of science degree in 1932 from the State Teachers College, Harrisonburg, now James Madison University, where she was president of the YWCA and voted "Most Dramatic" her senior year. After graduation, she returned to the Northern Neck and began her teaching career. She had a love for teaching and for those she taught, always challenging her pupils to be their best.
For many years, she taught Latin and English at Richmond County High School and shared her knowledge and joy of learning with her students. Her friendly, generous spirit and her story- telling endeared her to family, friends and students.
She was reared in Farnham Baptist Church and was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Mrs. Delano was an active church and community leader in women's groups, children's groups, and civic organizations. She, like her late husband, lived, loved, and labored for the church, the community, and the land she called home.
She is survived by her children: Frank Pelham Delano II and his wife, Patricia Joyce Hein, of Warsaw, Sara Delano Kelly of Arlington and Nancy Delano Moore and her husband, Hullihen
Williams Moore, of Richmond. Known and loved as "Nannar," she is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, Sara and Frank Moore, Emily, Francis Farrell and Polly Kelly, Meriwether Delano Gilmore, and Sophia, Priscilla, Nathaniel and Naomi Delano. She has five great-grandchildren. In addition, her brother, John Stafford Efford and his wife, Elizabeth, of Richmond, also survive her. She was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, Lawrence and Theodoric, and her husband of more than fifty years.
A funeral was held Friday, Jan. 24, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Oldhams.

Michael Wayne Woolfrey 56
Michael Wayne "Mike" Woolfrey, 56, of Strasburg died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge. He was the brother of Tommy Woolfrey of King George County.
Born Aug. 24, 1946, Mr. Woolfrey was a tractor-trailer driver with Virginia Concrete in Alexandria for 25 years.
He was a member of Local 639 of the Teamsters union.
In addition to his brother of King George, Mr. Woolfrey is survived by his mother, Frances Hughes of Fredericksburg; one son and two daughters; six sisters, Barbara Hayes of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Betty Surles of Punta Gorda, Fla., Nancy Dove of Woodbridge, Janet Hendricks of Woodbridge, Mary Schmitz of Fredericksburg and Julie Klopp of Amissville; and two other brothers, James Woolfrey of Woodbridge and Mark Woolfrey of Fairfax.
A funeral was held today at
Johnson Funeral Home in Locust Grove. Interment was in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery.

Powell 83
James E. Powell, 83, of King George County died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born at Aspen Hill, Tenn., Mr.
Powell was a combat veteran of the U.S. Navy, having retired after 22 years. He served in the Korean War and World War II. He also retired from civil service at Lorton.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Powell; four daughters, Barbara Jeanne
Powell of Austin, Texas, Andrea L. Snellings of Charlotte, N.C., Cheryl P. Ryland of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kathy P. Perkins of Herndon; five grandchildren, Mandy D. Otts, R.T. Ryland IV, Austin B. Ryland, Leonora M. Ryland and Nathan James Perkins; and two great-grandchildren, Nicole and Leanna Snellings.
The family received friends on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in King George. A private commital was held the following day in Quantico National Cemetery.

Louise
Williams Happel, 87, of King George died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Mary Washington Hospital.
She was born in Birmingham, Ala., on May 4, 1915. For a short time in Birmingham, as a very young pianist, she played piano for a silent-movie house. She attended schools in Birmingham and then in Newport News, after moving to Virginia as a teenager.
She held civil service jobs in Washington, D.C., Roanoke, Frederickburg, Quantico and Petersburg.
She married Ralph Happel in 1940. She retired early and served for a number of years as a temporary office helper and legal secretary in Fredericksburg.
She was a person who enjoyed her free time outdoors, walking her beloved terriers and fishing and boating with her husband until both became too old for such activity. She did not mind baiting her own hook.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Happel, who died on Nov. 14, 2002. She is survived by several cousins.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Jan. 21, in the Fredericksburg City Cemetery. Pastor Allen Fisher officiated.

John Frank Byrd, 51, of Hustle departed this life Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at a Fairfax hospital. He was the brother of Rosa Byrd and Dorothy Mae Johnson, both of Colonial Beach

William Louis Balderson, 74, of Montross died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003.
Mr. Balderson was a retired laborer and a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
