Robert W. Dempsey, 72, of Unionville died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was the brother of Yetta Lee of Colonial Beach. Born in Vienna, Mr. Dempsey had retired from the federal government. He also worked as a maintenance employee and bus driver at The Grymes School in Orange County for more than 10 years. In addition to his sister of Colonial Beach, Mr. Dempsey is survived by his wife, Frances I. Dempsey; five daughters, Elizabeth Ferrell of Mount Rainier, Md., Barbara Lewis of Clinton, Md., Debora Swarthout of Unionville, Dinah Saunders of Edgewater, Md., and Elsie Brock of Fredericksburg; four sons, Robert Dempsey Jr. of Riverdale, Md., Arthur Dempsey of Hillsboro, N.C., Louis Dempsey of Lake of the Woods, and Allen Dempsey of Unionville; five other sisters, Anna Fouse of Fredericksburg, Katherine Corson of Spotsylvania County, Mary Jane Blake of Rockville, Peggy Owen of Manassas, and Lois Dempsey of Madison County; two brothers, Colin D. Dempsey of Spotsylvania and John W. Dempsey of Manassas; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Tommy Dempsey. A funeral was held Friday, May 3, at
Johnson Funeral Home, Locust Grove. Burial was in Laurel Hill Memorial Park, Spotsylvania.
Bernice W. Burgess 79 years
Bernice W. Burgess, 79, of Dahlgren died Monday, April 29, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Sparta, Wis., Mrs. Burgess had retired as an administrative assistant in the Comptrollers Office at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, after 44 years. She was a member of the American Legion and a charter member of Peace Lutheran Church in King George County. She was the widow of George A. Burgess. Survivors include a sister, Lorene W. Schneider of Arlington; a brother, Roland W. Wegner of Raleigh, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Friday, May 3, at Peace Lutheran Church. Burial was in the Burgess family cemetery in King George. The Rev. Richard J. Finck officiated. Curtis R. Wise 46 years
Curtis R. Wise, 46, of Montross died Friday, April 26, 2002, as the result of a motorcycle accident in Westmoreland County. Born in Westmoreland County, Mr. Wise was a supervisor at H. Warshow & Sons in Tappahannock. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Montross and attended Little Zion Baptist Church, Oak Grove, where he sang in the Men's Chorus and was a member of the Men's Fellowship. Survivors include his wife, Victoria P. Wise; a daughter, Shumeka M. Wise of Montross; a son, Derek A. Wise of Montross; and a sister, Hope W. Wise of Montross. A funeral was held today at Little Zion Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. William B. Scott officiated. Cedell Brooks Funeral Home, Port Royal, handled arrangements.
James Henry Oliver 71 years
James Henry Oliver, 71, of Spotsylvania County died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the brother of Naomi Hensel and Florence Shifflett, both of King George County. Born in Woodbridge, Mr. Oliver had retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He was a member of First Bible Baptist Temple and was a Marine Corps veteran, having served in Korea. In addition to his sisters of King George, Mr. Oliver is survived by his wife, Jean Oliver; three brothers, Marion J. Oliver Jr., Herbert Oliver and Charles Oliver, all of Fredericksburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Burial was in Quantico National Cemetery. The Rev. Tony Self and the Rev. Ben Wharton officiated.

Pete Elemus Newman, 90, of Dahlgren died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George County. Born in Westmoreland County, he was a member of Siloam Baptist Church in Westmoreland and attended Little Ark Baptist Church in King George. Survivors include his wife, Helen T. Newman; two daughters, Dreda Newman and Valerie Cross; a son, Jackson Newman; three stepsons, Wallace Bumbry, Leste Bumbry and Alonzo Bumbry; three grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Albert W. "Al" Doten, 80, of Ebb Tide Beach in Westmoreland County died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Mr. Doten was a former partner with Patuxent Plumbing and Heating Inc. in College Park, Md. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 2666 in Oak Grove and the Colonial Beach Moose Lodge 1267. He was a World War II Army Air Corps combat veteran. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating with his wife, Alice F. Doten. Mr. Doten spent winters in Port Charlotte, Fla., for the past 14 years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Doten is survived by a brother, Frank E. Doten of Washington, D.C., and nieces and nephews. An Elks service was held Monday, April 29, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, Colonial Beach. Following the service, the Rev. Richard Headley officiated a funeral. Gertrudes Garcia "Babes" West, 51, of Spotsylvania County, formerly of King George County, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in the Philippines, Mrs. West was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in King George. She was the widow of Stephen Allen West. She was a volunteer with various organizations, including Hospice Support Care and the Boy Scouts of America in King George. She also volunteered with the school system as a teacher's aid and was active in the Parent-Teacher Association. Survivors include two sons, Allen West Jr. of King George and Robert
Williams West of Fredericksburg; three sisters; five brothers; and two granddaughters, Brooke West and Sarah West, both of King George.
