Katherine W. "Kate" Birt, 79, of Fredericksburg, formerly of Westmoreland County, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Westmoreland, Mrs. Birt had retired as a secretary for Stafford County schools and Fredericksburg city schools.
She was a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church, Mary Washington Hospital Auxiliary, Hospice Support Care, The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, Spotsylvania Lions Club and Retired Officers Association.
She was the widow of Robert L. Birt Jr.
Survivors include three daughters, Beckie B. Resio of Spotsylvania County, Patricia B. Jackson of Little Rock, Ark., and Barbara B.
Carter of Stafford; a sister, Frances Buchan of Stafford; a brother, Reuben N. Wilkerson of Bothell, Wash.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Saturday, June 29, at Hillcrest United Methodist Church. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stafford. The Rev. John E. DeJong officiated.

Mary Alice Smith, 71, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the mother of Lilian Brent of Dahlgren.
A lifelong resident of Fredericksburg, Mrs.
Smith was formerly employed by Anne's Grill Restaurant. She was the widow of Charlie Smith.
In addition to her daughter of Dahlgren, Mrs.
Smith is survived by six other daughters, Earline Jackson, Mary Ann Ferguson, Loretta Coleman and Margarette Coleman, all of Spotsylvania County, Theresa

A funeral was held Tuesday, June 25, at Second New Hope Baptist Church in Spotsylvania. Burial was at Mt. Lawn Cemetery in Caroline. The Rev. Charles Hilliard officiated.

Casey Miller 25
Casey Miller, 25, of California, formerly of Dahlgren and Oak Grove, died Sunday, June 23, in Riverside, Calif., from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash.
Local survivors include his mother, Nancy Vanover; two sisters, Courtney Snyder and Marti Combs; two brothers, Carl Vanover and Cole Vanover; his> grandmothers, Hilda Hartman and Janet Vanover; and an aunt, Carolyn Vanover Nichols.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Roy Leon Lewis 74
Roy Leon Lewis, 74, of King George County died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Lancaster County, Mr. Lewis had retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. He had also done some farming and continued to farm after his retirement.
He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church at Owens, the Masonic Lodge at Colonial Beach and the American Legion. He was the widower of Marie Lewis.
Survivors include a son, Roy L. Lewis Jr. of Richmond; a sister, Sarah Margaret Oliver of Dahlgren; and two grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, June 24, at Oakland Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Guy D. Mattox Jr. officiated.

Catherine Hanson, 72, of Colonial Beach, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Trinity Nursing Home in Charlottesville.
Survivors include a son, Craig Hanson of Clarkesburg, Md.; a sister, Mildred Muhly of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren; and her companion, Garland Sauer of Colonial Beach.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Roland Dove 78
Roland Dove, 78, of Dahlgren died at his home Wednesday, June 19, 2002.
Born in Columbus, Ark., Mr. Dove had retired in 1981 from the federal government at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division.
He was a member of American Legion Post 89 in King George County, Oakland Baptist Church at Owens and was a charter member of the Dahlgren Rescue Squad. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Dove; a daughter, Debbie D. Peyton of King George; two sons, Forrest Roy Dove and Jack Preston Dove, both of King George; two sisters, Grace Elizabeth Sims of Shreveport, La., and Helen Wooten of Texarkana, Texas; a brother, Billy Dove of Ashdown, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Friday, June 21, in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Steve Siegrist officiated.

James W. Devers 61
James W. Devers, 61, of King George County died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at his home.
A Fairfax County native, Mr. Devers moved to Colonial Beach and then to King George County. He was a life member of the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department and of the Dixieland Hunt Club in Oak Grove. He was an outdoorsman and enjoying working in his yard.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy M. Devers; a daughter, Terry Inscoe of Colonial Beach; three sons, Jimmy Devers of Montross, Cameron Quick of Manassas and Ryan Devers of the home; three sisters, Mary Devers of Bealeton, Susie Hamilton of Warsaw and Betty Bowen of Montross; a brother, George Devers of Colonial Beach; and six grandchildren. Mr. Devers was also the father of the late Billy Devers.
A funeral was held today at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach. Burial was in Popes Creek Cemetery in Baynesville. The Rev. Richard Headley and the Rev. Ted James officiated.

Robert Jennings Cabaniss, 79, of King George County died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Born in Roanoke, Mr. Cabaniss had retired from the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., after 35 years.
He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in King George, the Ruritan Club, the Boy Scouts of America, the Virginia military Institute Alumni Association, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Ann Cabaniss; a daughter, Cynthia M. Quick of Waldorf, Md.; two sons, Robert J. Cabaniss Jr. of Greensburg, Pa., and Christopher W. Cabaniss of Jacksonville, N.C.; two sisters, Carolinea C. Heintz of Toledo, Ohio, and Rachiel Nichol of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Monday, June 24, in Quantico National Cemetery. A memorial service was held the same day at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Richard Finck, the Rev. Terrance Naumann and Chaplain Mylissa Sexton officiated.

Mary Magdalene Wiley, 83, of Stafford County died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the mother of Robert Wiley of King George County.
Mrs. Wiley was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg.
In addition to her son of King George, Mrs. Wiley is survived by her husband, Noel Anthony Wiley; a daughter, Leslie Overby of Fairfax; two other sons, Michael Wiley of Occoquan and Stephan Wiley of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Amerika Bennet of Albany, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral was held Monday, June 17, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial was today in Arlington National Cemetery.

Verner L. Sloan, 82, of Colonial Beach died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in South Carolina, Mr. Sloan was a former resident of Northern Virginia.
He had retired as a brick mason in the Northern Virginia area and was a World War II Navy Combat veteran, having served in the South Pacific.
He was the widower of Annette Snipes Sloan and Annette Bender Sloan.
Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Jean Duncan of Dale City; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, June 17, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home in Colonial Beach. Burial was in Mount Comfort Cemetery in Alexandria.
