Theressia B. Mothershead
Theressia B. "Ressia" Mothershead, 89, of Westmoreland County succumbed to heart failure Saturday, July 20, 2002, in Kilmarnock.
She was a lifetime member of Rappahannock Baptist Church and was an avid cook and gardner.
Survivors include her sister, Geneva B. Franklin of Montross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life was held Monday, July 22, at Rappahannock Baptist Church in Newland. A private burial was held Tuesday.

J. L. Hepler 92
J. L. Hepler, 92, of King George County died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born in Alleghany County, Mr. Hepler had retired as an engineer with Southern Railroad in Alexandria. He was a longtime member of Hanover Baptist Church in King George, an avid gardener and did some truck farming. He was the author of Southern Railway Remembered, which was published in 2001, and was the widower of Maud Hepler.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Hepler; two daughters, Carolyn Close of Locust Grove and Roberta Hough of Round Hill; a son, Jack Hepler of Richmond; a stepdaughter, Louise Funk of Florida; two stepsons, Tommy Goodman of Dinwiddie County and Jerry Goodman of King George; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, July 22, at Hanover Baptist Church in King George. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Steve Siegrist officiated.

James Harold Gould 77
James Harold Gould, 77, of Hague, formerly of Richmond, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002.
Mr. Gould is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Mitchell Gould; his children, James Harold Gould Jr. of Montpelier, Barbara Gould Hill of Spotsylvania County, Patricia Gould Billingsley of Rockville, Candace Melton Henry of Chesterfield County, J. Glenn Melton of Augusta, Ga., and Robert C. Melton of Tegacay, S.C.; 14 grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Gould Grant; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James Roderick Melton Jr.
Mr. Gould was a charter member of Derbyshire Baptist Church. He was a World War II veteran of the Air Force and was a nose gunner in the European campaigns in Italy and France from January to April 1945.
He was a graduate of Virginia Tech, where he received a bachelor of science in architecture. He worked for 18 years in Hanover County designing many schools and renovations, the first being Pearson's Corner Elementary School. The first large school he designed was Hermitage High School.
He also worked 18 years in Spotsylvania, where he also did many schools and renovations. His largest accomplishments were Spotsylvania High School and Courtland High School. He also designed schools in Chesterfield, Amherst, Lancaster and Greene counties. Mr. Gould was one of the organizers of the Virginia Association of Professionals, and also of the Virginia Capital Bank. He was a member of the AIA and a board member of the Tuckahoe Little League and also designed their complex.
He was a professional singer at Westwood Supper Club and had two radio shows at WRVA.
A memorial service was held Friday, June 19, at Derbyshire Baptist Church. Interment was private.

Edna R. Carey-cable 81
Edna R. Carey-Cable, 81, of Richmond, formerly of Colonial Beach, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002.
She is survived by two sons, Andrew and Michael Cable; seven grandchildren, Andrew Jr., Robin, Joseph, Andrea, Tyler and Michelle Cable and Marcell Taylor; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo Roberts; and many loving friends. Edna was a very active member for many years of the Daughters of America, Fredericksburg Chapter; and the Colonial Beach Women of the Moose Lodge.
A graveside service was held Friday, July 19, in Hollywood Cemetery's Mausoleum in Richmond.

Neoma Virginia McKendree 72
Neoma Virginia McKendree, 72, of Fredericksburg died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at her home. She was the mother of Walter McKendree of Colonial Beach.
Mrs. McKendree was retired from the federal government after 20 years of service, and she also worked for the Environmental Protection Agency as an administrative officer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. McKendree.
In addition to her son of Colonial Beach, Mrs. McKendree is survived by three daughters, Wanda Morris and Deborah Spitler, both of Fredericksburg, and Sandra McPhail of Germantown, Tenn.; two other sons, William McKendree of Nokesville and Wayne McKendree of Fredericksburg; one brother, George
Smith of Lorton; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Monday, July 1, at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City. Burial was in Quantico National Cemetery. Chaplin Richard Headley officiated.
Harvard Haywood Mayer 88
Harvard Haywood Mayer, 80, of King George County died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Richmond.
Known as "Mr. Haywood," he ran Haywood's Auto Body Repair in King George.
He was a trustee, treasurer and member of the Male Chorus, the Senior Choir and the Men's Organization at Antioch Baptist Church in King George.
Other memberships included the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8717, where he was post commander; the American Legion 314; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and the King George Chamber of Commerce. He was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Vaughan Mayer; two daughters, Ruth Mayer Martin of New Jersey and LaVerne Mayer of King George; five sons, Haywood Mayer, Edward Mayer and Timothy Mayer, all of New Jersey, Gary Mayer of King George and George Mayer of Florida; three sisters, Edna Vaughan, Bernice Mason, and Brenda Tarver, all of New Jersey; a brother, Herbert Mayer of New Jersey; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Friday, June 28, at Antioch Baptist Church. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park in King George. The Rev. Larry Finch officiated.

Kenneth Paul Gregory, 49, of Colonial Beach died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Gregory, formerly of Fredericksburg, worked for CRW Builders in Manassas. He was a member of New Life Ministries in Colonial Beach.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Lee Gregory; three daughters, Donna Marie Madden of Colonial Beach, Tari Lynn Gregory of Stafford County and Georgeann Cook of Colonial Beach; four sons, Kenneth Paul Gregory Jr. of Stafford, Chad Everett Gregory of Dumfries and John Charles Madden and Kevin Eugene Madden, both of Colonial Beach; his mother, Ella Mae Gregory of Vienna; a sister, Sherry Rae Hagerman of Fredericksburg; a brother, Barry Lee Gregory of Manassas Park; and eight grandchildren.

Mildred F. Fox, 92, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital.
Born in Newark, N.J., Mrs. Fox and her husband, the late Herman S. Fox, owned Joyland Gardens Amusement Center in Colonial Beach.
There are no immediate survivors.

Eugene James Edwards 76
Eugene James "Gene" Edwards, 76, of Stafford County died Monday, June 24, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the stepfather of Randy Reed and Jimmy Reed, both of King George County.
Born in Fauquier County, Mr. Edwards had retired from civil service at the Quantico Marine Corps Base after 37 years.
He was a Navy veteran, having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 290 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3103.
In addition to his stepsons of King George, Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Helen Reed Edwards; a daughter, Edith Edwards Guy of Fredericksburg; a son, Eugene Edwards Jr. of Fredericksburg; two other stepsons, Marshall Reed of Fredericksburg and Richy Reed of Stafford; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three stepgrandchildren.
A funeral was held Thursday, June 27, at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stafford. The Rev. Patrick L. Coffey officiated.

Clark L. Boyer, 58, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of King George County, died Wednesday, June 26, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Del., after a lengthy illness.
Born in Washington, D.C., Mr. Boyer was a truck driver.
Survivors include a daughter, Tanya L. Boyer of Baltimore; a son, Mark A. Boyer of Elkton, Md.; and two sisters, Janet Wolfe of Unionville and Linda Armour of Gordonsville.
A graveside service was held Sunday, June 30 at Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery in King George. The Rev. Cliff Hedges officiated.
