Paul Vargo 80 years
Paul Vargo, 80, of King George County died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Liesenring, Pa., Mr. Vargo had retired from the Navy after 20 years, having served during the Korean War and World War II. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor. After military retirement, he was employed by Vitro Laboratories at Dahlgren as a missile systems engineer for 25 years. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in King George. Survivors include his wife, Annie S. Vargo; a daughter, Karen Ann Vargo of Warrenton; a son, Wesley D. Vargo of Clifton; two sisters, Helyn Suhoza of Bethlehem, Pa., and Mary Agnes Kapelewski of Stamford, Conn.; two grandchildren; two nieces; one great-niece and one great-nephew. A funeral was held today at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Copeland officiated. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 11 a.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, Box 155, King George, Va. 22485. Gertrude Janet Rosenberg 83 years
Gertrude Janet Rosenberg, 83, of Fredericksburg died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at Gladys Spellman Specialty Hospital in Cheverly, Md. She was the mother of Alan W. Rosenberg of King George County. Born in Bronx, N.Y., Mrs. Rosenberg was a member of Beth Sholom Sisterhood, the Colonial Beach Lioness Club and Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She was the widow of Meyer Rosenberg. In addition to her son of King George, Mrs. Rosenberg is survived by a daughter, Roberta J. Rayburn of Marlboro, N.J.; another son, Dr. Neil Rosenberg of Chicago, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Friday, Feb. 1, in Oak Hill Cemetery. Para-Rabbi Ronda Young officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Beth Sholom Sisterhood, 805 Lyons Blvd., Fredericksburg, Va. 22406. Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, handled the arrangements.

Gay C. Robertson 86 years
Gay C. Robertson, 86, of Colonial Beach died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Mathias, W.Va., Mrs. Robertson was a former elementary school teacher in Washington, and had retired as supervisor of finance from the American Red Cross in Alexandria after 37 years. She was a graduate of Wilson Teachers College in Washington. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher for the College and Career Class. She was the widow of Wilmer "Bill" Robertson. Survivors include a son, Ronald O. Robertson of Alexandria; three sisters, Virginia Barnes of El Monte, Calif., Ruth Lee Fracchini of Portland, Ore., and Mary Fulk of Rockville, Md.; a brother, Ben Cullers of Harrisburg, Ill.; and two grandchildren. A funeral was held Friday, Feb. 1, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in Quantico National Cemetery. The Rev. Willard D. Bowen and the Rev. Donald H. Bowen officiated. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Colonial Beach Rescue Squad, 225 Dennison St., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443; or to Oak Grove Baptist Church, 8096 Leedstown Road, Oak Grove, Va. 22443. Frances Kemp Jenkins 84 years
Frances Kemp Jenkins, 84, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Center in Colonial Beach. Born in Westmoreland County, Mrs. Jenkins was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was the widow of Alvin B. Jenkins. Survivors include two sons, Alvin B. "Pudgie" Jenkins Jr. of Oak Grove and William Edward "Billy" Jenkins of Colonial Beach; three brothers, Donald Kemp of Colonial Beach, Bobby Kemp of Manassas and Frankie Kemp of Clinton, Md.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Frankie J. Jenkins. A funeral was held Monday, Feb. 4, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery at Oak Grove. The Rev. Willard Bowen officiated. Anna Marie Earle 78 years
Anna Marie Earle, 78, of Colonial Beach died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Center in Colonial Beach. Born in Chestnut Hill, Pa., Mrs. Earle was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Colonial Beach. She cared for children and worked as a nurse. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Ann Dougherty of Leighton, Pa., and Alice T. Stevens of Colonial Beach; a son, John Linwood Earle of Dayton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A private funeral will be held at a later date. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Mary Washington Health Center, 2400 McKinney Blvd., Colonial Beach, Va. 22443. Thomas S. Blaser 84 years
Thomas S. Blaser, 84, of King George County died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George. Born in Williamsport, Pa., Mr. Blaser had retired as a machinist for Dupont there. Survivors include his wife, Alverna M. Blaser; a daughter, Dorothy Jane Turnbull of Ellsworth, Wisc.; two sons, Thomas M. Blaser of LaPlata, Md. and Maurice B. Blaser of Laurel, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George. The Rev. Sherman Davis officiated. Burial was Friday, Feb. 1, in Montgomery, Pa. Iona Bell Coakley Bass 90 years
Iona Bell Coakley Bass, 90, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Woodmont Center. She was the mother of W. Alan Bass of King George County. Born in Stafford County, Mrs. Bass was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church and the Leeland Home Demonstration Club. She was the widow of Cary K. Bass. In addition to her son of King George, Mrs. Bass is survived by a daughter, Sharon Kerney of Phoenix, Ariz.; two other sons, Francis W. Bass of Phoenix and Vincent A. Bass of Colonial Heights; two sisters, Eva Carter of Odenton, Md., and Julia Mills of Spotsylvania County; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Friday, Feb. 1, at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. John Fair officiated. Joseph "Joey" Wood 21 years
Joseph "Joey" Wood, 21, of Dry Ridge, Ky., died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, in Crittenden, Ky. He was the son of Russell Wood of King George County and paternal grandson of Gilbert Wood of Colonial Beach. A native of Fredericksburg, Mr. Wood was employed as a dispatcher for the Grant County Sheriff Department. His death is being investigated as a homicide. In addition to his father of King George and paternal grandfather of Colonial Beach, Mr. Wood is survived by his mother and stepfather, Debbie and Danny Sherrod of Dry Ridge, Ky.; a sister, Terri Sproles of Burlington, Ky.; a brother, Russell Wood Jr. of Dry Ridge, Ky.; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Patricia Shannon of Dry Ridge; and his stepgrandparents, Warner and Rita Baxter of Charlotte, N.C., and Charles and Anna Sherrod of Blanchester, Ohio. A funeral was held at Saturday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, Ky. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Grant County Explorers, c/o Grant County Sheriff, 101 N. Main St., Williamstown, Ky. 41097.

Frank V. Werme Jr. 76 years
Frank V. Werme Jr., 76, of Dahlgren died at his home Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002. Born in Quincy, Mass., Mr. Werme was a former school teacher there for 6 years, before moving to Dahlgren in 1958. He had retired in 1987 from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, after 30 years as a mathematician and branch head. He was a member, deacon emeritus and chairman of the Cemetery Committee at Oakland Baptist Church, King George. Mr. Werme was also an avid golfer, and was a radioman on a bomber in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lucille Werme; a daughter, Abby Lovinger of Montpelier; three sons, Todd Werme of Lexington Park, Md., Paul Werme of Dahlgren and Eric Werme of Fredericksburg; two sisters, Ruth Craig of Quincy, Mass., and Margery Edele of Hamden, Conn.; a granddaughter; and five grandsons. A funeral was held today at Oakland Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Guy D. Mattox Jr. and the Rev. Ken Miller officiated. John Gustav "Gus" Loeffler 83 years
John Gustav "Gus" Loeffler, 83, of Colonial Beach died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Mary Washington Health Center in Colonial Beach. Born in Hickory Hill, Mr. Loeffler had retired as a civil service employee and was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Colonial Beach. He was the widower of Vera C. Loeffler. Survivors include two daughters, Madeline L. Rose and Edna L. Jenkins, both of Colonial Beach; two sons, John V. Loeffler of Sharpsburg, Md., and Clinton F. Loeffler of Colonial Beach; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. Burial was in Historyland Memorial Park, King George. The Rev. Vincent Bork officiated. Burgess of King George County. Mrs. Monroe was employed at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. In addition to her brother of King George, Mrs. Monroe is survived by two daughters, Tracey L. Smith and Kimberly D. Monroe, both of Spotsylvania; a son, Robert W. Monroe of Spotsylvania; her mother, Bertha Burgess of Spotsylvania; a sister, Peggy B. Hogan of Spotsylvania; and three grandchildren. A funeral was held Thursday at Laurel Hill Funeral Home, Spotsylvania. Burial was in Laurel Hill Memorial Park. Lester L. Hensley 67 years
Lester L. Hensley, 67, of Colonial Beach died at his home Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002. Mr. Hensley was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Alexandria and had retired as a clerk from Bonus Food Store and Acme Market. Survivors include his wife, Joan Petitt Hensley; two sons, Gregory Lee Hensley of Chesapeake and Kevin Roy Hensley of Colonial Beach; his mother, Mary B. Hensley of Alexandria; a sister, Joan Holcomb of West Virginia; two brothers, Teddy Hensley and Alvin Hensley, both of Alexandria; and a grandson. A funeral was held today at Cunningham Funeral Home, Alexandria. Burial was in Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria. Patrick Robb "Pete" Harvey 80 years
Patrick Robb "Pete" Harvey, 80, of Montross died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital. He was a retired carpenter and a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Montross. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn M. Harvey; a son, Patrick Robb Harvey Jr. of King George County; a daughter, Ruth Ann Harvey of Montross; a sister, Ruth Ellen Brownley of Sandy Point; and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held Tuesday at St. James Episcopal Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Prentice Kinser III officiated. Louis Going "Pete" Dixon Jr., 61, of Montross died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his residence. Mr. Dixon had retired as a truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Lenia Lynch Dixon; three daughters, Delaine Richards of Hague, Lynette Gause of Wurzburg, Germany, and Charmyne Dixon of Fredericksburg; two sons, Ralph Hunter of Clinton, Md., and Shawn Brown of Warsaw; three sisters, Phyllis Ross and Vanessa Farmer, both of Richmond, and Lorraine Brandon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two brothers, Carl Jones of Philadelphia, Pa., and Bernard Brandon of Long Island, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral was held Monday at Salem Baptist Church in Mount Holly. The Rev. William Isaac Curry officiated. Berry O. Waddy Funeral Home, Lancaster, handled the arrangements. Maggie Gutridge Margaret "Maggie" Gutridge, 97, of Montross died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Warsaw Health Care Center. Born in Lancaster County, Mrs. Gutridge was a self-employed merchant. She was a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church at Baynesville. Mrs. Gutridge was the widow of Robert L. Gutridge. Survivors include four grandchildren, Sharon Gallahan of King George County, Beverly Link of Bryon, Ga., Gary Johnson and Kathy Brooks, both of Montross; and three great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Arthur H. Johnson. A funeral was held Friday at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Burial was in Popes Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
