Helen Fuller VanDenburg Hall 92 years
Helen Fuller VanDenburg Hall, 92, of Locust Hill, a former King George County teacher, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Hall was a 1929 graduate of the State Teachers College in Fredericksburg. In addition to teaching in King George, she also taught school in Fredericksburg. Mrs. Hall and her husband, the late Bernard A. Hall, owned and operated Hall's Hardware and Sporting Goods Store in downtown Fredericksburg. She also managed the Kenmore Inn, which her mother owned until 1972. Mrs. Hall was a member of Church of the Visitation in Topping and was a member of the Business Women's Club. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth H. Horton of Arlington; two sons, B. VanDenburg Hall of Middlesex County and John Watson Hall of Fredericksburg; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral Mass was held Tuesday at Church of the Visitation. Boyce L. "Bo" Garmon 74 years
Boyce L. "Bo" Garmon, 74, of Union, S.C., formerly of Colonial Beach, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at his home. Born in Laurens County, Mr. Garmon had retired from General Research in McLean. He was a member of the American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose and Friendship Baptist Church in Whitmire, S.C. He was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Julia Keel Garmon; two daughters, Christina L. Griffin of Woodbridge and Gigi Wicker Couch of Santee, S.C.; a son, Blane Garmon of Chapin, S.C.; three sisters, Frances Bane and Virginia Gilliam, both of Whitmire, S.C., and Ruby Bumgarner of Morgantown, N.C.; a granddaughter, Andrea D. Menefee of Honolulu, who was raised in his home; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; a stepgranddaughter; a stepgrandson; and one great-stepgrandson. A funeral was held Sunday at Friendship Baptist Church. Elsie Marie Campbell Thrasher 87 years
Elsie Marie Campbell Thrasher, 87, of Arnold, Md., died of diabetes. and heart failure Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold. She was a native of Newland in Richmond County and the sister of Rubynette Sanford and brother of Sherwood Campbell, both of Montross. Mrs. Thrasher, raised in Newland, also had lived in Washington and Madison, Ala. She worked as an administrator for the C&P Telephone Co. in Washington and in Huntsville, Ala. She retired in 1970. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was the widow of Woodrow Thrasher. In addition to her sister and brother of Montross, Mrs. Thrasher is survived by two sons, Bert Ashton of Arnold and Chuck Ashton of Lakewood, Calif.; another sister, Lorraine
Smith of Tappahannock; three other brothers, Preston Campbell of Ocean Pines, Md., Wallace Campbell of Mechanicsville, Md. and Gilbert Campbell of Reston; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Joseph T. Lewis 64 years
Retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Joseph T. Lewis, 64, of Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Dahlgren, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, in Las Vegas. Mr. Lewis had retired from the Army after 27 years. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Lewis; two daughters and three sons, all of New Mexico; three sisters, Dorothy Exum of Capitol Heights, Md., Savannah Haliburton of Dahlgren and Roberta Austin of Woodbridge; five brothers, Chester Lewis, Preston Lewis and Philip Lewis, all of Dahlgren, Raymond Lewis Jr. of South Carolina, and Charles Lewis of Germany; and eight grandchildren. Frank Conrad Palmer Jr. 82 years
Frank Conrad Palmer Jr., 82, of Colonial Beach, formerly of Arlington, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Richmond, Mr. Palmer had retired as a captain in the Marine Corps and was a World War II combat veteran. Following his military career, he was a police officer in Arlington County and hosted the "Lt. Palmer of the Police" show, which aired on Channel 5 television. He was in charge of the school safety patrol program in Arlington County, was a Navy Department public safety officer at the Pentagon and was instrumental in proposing legislation for seatbelts in vehicles. He was also a safety officer with the Department of Labor in Washington and was an instructor for driver improvement clinics. He was a member of the Kena Temple in Alexandria and the Colonial Beach Moose and Elks lodges. Survivors include his wife, Helen A. Palmer; a son, Walter J. Palmer of Lewes, Del.; a brother, Thomas A. Palmer of Charleston, S.C.; and four grandchildren. A graveside committal of ashes was held Wednesday at Quantico National Cemetery, with full military honors. Wilmer Leroy "Bill" Robertson, 86, of Colonial Beach died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Mr. Robertson had retired as a barber in Alexandria and also as a part-time barber from Weston's Barber Shop in Colonial Beach. A Marine veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Army Corps of Engineers in Korea in 1950-51. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Robertson composed and performed country gospel music at many churches in the Northern Neck. Survivors include his wife, Gay C. Robertson; a son, Ronald Owen Robertson of Alexandria; two brothers, Winthrop I. Robertson of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Sidney P.
