W. Thomas Weaver III 85 years
W. Thomas Weaver III, 85, of Clinton, N.C., formerly of King George County, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Sampson Regional Medical Center in North Carolina. Born in Falls Church, Mr. Weaver was managing editor of Tidewater Weeklies Inc., whose publications included the King George News and Westmoreland News. He was manager and coach of a class-A baseball team in King George. He was also a correspondent for Virginia and North Carolina newspapers including the Fayetteville Observer, The Erwin Times, the Wilmington Star, The Dunn Dispatch and the Oxford Public Ledger. Survivors include his wife, Lois Covert Weaver; a daughter, Susan W. Neal Pryor 37 years
Neal Pryor, 37, of Woodbridge, formerly of King George County, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center, from complications of heart surgery. Mr. Pryor worked as a computer repair technician with ICI Computer Co. in Sterling. He was a 1982 graduate of King George High School, where he played basketball. Mr. Pryor was a member of Salem Baptist Church, Jersey, where he served on the usher board and sang in the Male Chorus. Arthur William "Artie" Mills Jr. 76 years
Arthur William "Artie" Mills Jr., 76, of Colonial Beach died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Mary Washington Hospital. Born in Alexandria, Mr. Mills was a truck driver for Virginia Concrete for 32 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran and served as a cook on the USS Merganser for 12 years, and then on the USS Hyades. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 639. Survivors include two brothers, Vernon Mills of Colonial Beach and George Mills of Jacksonville, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including George Mills III and Jacob Mills, both of Colonial Beach, whom he raised. Edgar Norden Middlebrook 76 years
Edgar Norden Middlebrook, 76, of Harrisonburg, a native of Dahlgren, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. Born Nov. 25, 1924, Mr. Middlebrook had retired in 1982 as a civil service employee from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, and moved to Harrisonburg in 1986. He was a member of the Dahlgren Lions Club, Dahlgren Rescue Squad, Dahlgren American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Harrisonburg. He was a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran, and was the widower of Mary Ellen Sawyer Middlebrook. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Sue Leeper of Harrisonburg; two sons, Edgar N. Middlebrook Jr. of California and John C. Middlebrook of Harrisonburg; a sister, Virginia L. Leith of King George County; two brothers, Carlton G. Middlebrook and Charles Q. Middlebrook, both of King George; and three grandchildren. A funeral was held Saturday at West Side Baptist Church in Harrisonburg. William Archie Keys 87 years
William Archie Keys, 87, of Stafford County died at his residence Friday, May 4, 2001. He was the father of Elaine Keys Beckham of King George County. Born in Dumfries, Mr. Keys had retired from the National Bank of Quantico, where he worked from 1942 to 1975. He was a member of the John A. LeJeune Masonic Lodge in Quantico for 55 years and was a member of Dumfries United Methodist Church. He was the widower of Dora Louise Liming Keys. In addition to his daughter of King George, Mr. Keys is survived by two other daughters, Bonnie Keys Pattie and Susan Keys Sutherland, both of Stafford; a sister, Emmit Keys Waters of Dumfries; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late William Archie "Archieball" Keys. A graveside service was held Sunday in Dumfries Cemetery. The Rev. Henry Amidon officiated. Elizabeth S. "Bessie" Redding, 88, of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of King George County, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at Northwest Hospital in Tucson. A native of King George, Mrs. Redding had retired as a communications technician at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. She was a member of Round Hill Baptist Church in King George and was the widow of Clifford C. Redding. Survivors include a daughter, Rosalie R. Shelton of Tucson; two brothers, John Suttle of Colonial Beach and Sam Suttle of Talent, Ore.; two grandchildren, David M. Margaret B. Childress, 78, of King George County died at her residence Monday, April 30, 2001. She was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in King George and enjoyed vegetable gardening and reading. Survivors include two sons, Ralph L. "Tim" Childress Jr. of King George and Edward Harrison Childress of Springfield; a sister, Mollie King of Fair Play, S.C.; three brothers, Harry Burrell of Dahlgren, Kenneth Burrell and Bradley Burrell, both of Houston; and two grandchildren. Frederica T. Pardoe 93 years
Frederica T. Pardoe, 93, of Colonial Beach died of bronchitis Thursday, April 5, 2001, at an assisted-living facility in Fredericksburg. Mrs. Pardoe, a resident of Colonial Beach for 36 years, was well known for her assistance to senior citizens in the Northern Neck and Arlington areas. She drove seniors to medical appointments until the age of 90. She was a longtime supporter of Stratford Hall, the Robert E. Lee ancestral home, and several rescue squads. Affectionately known as Freddie, Mrs. Pardoe was born in New York City and moved to Washington in 1930 looking for work. She was hired as a secretary by Capital Transit Co., where she worked for 29 years, retiring in 1959 as assistant purchasing agent. After her retirement from Capital Transit, she worked in the advertising department of The Washington Daily News from 1960 to 1965. She then retired to Colonial Beach, where she worked at the Ben Franklin store until 1994. She was the widow of Kelvin M. Pardoe. Survivors include a son, Don Maclean of Fairfax; a niece and two nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pardoe's body was donated to the Virginia Anatomical Division in Richmond for research. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

George Shannon Morrison, 71, of King George County died at his home Tuesday, April 3, 2001. Born in Columbia, S.C., Mr. Morrison had retired as an engineer in 1995 from the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division. He was a graduate of the University of Florida and was a Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Pounds Morrison; and a son, Matthew S. Morrison of Alexandria.
