Emma W. Kurnos

Emma W. Kurnos, 82, died Feb. 1 at her home in Sterling.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., she lived most of her life in New Jersey and moved to Sterling in the early 1980s. She worked for Loudoun County Public Schools before her retirement in 1995.

Survivors include her grandsons, Joseph Kurnos and his wife, Margaret, and David Kurnos and his wife, Katie, all of Sterling; great-grandchildren Gregory and Julianne Kurnos, both of Sterling; and one daughter, Phyllis Gaudenzi of New Jersey.

Services were held Feb. 3 in New Jersey, with interment at Riverside Cemetery in Rochelle Park, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northern Virginia Hospice, P.O. Box 922, Falls Church, Va. 22040-0922.

Lavinia L. (Lucy) Shaffer

Lavinia Lou (Lucy) Shaffer of Herndon died Feb.7 at Alexandria Hospital.

She was born May 19, 1929 in Herndon, and was the widow of the late Sam Shaffer, Survivors include her children, Sammy Shaffer of Sterling, Gene Shaffer of Suffolk, Barbara Ball of Martinsburg, W.Va., Roy Shaffer of Herndon and Richard Shaffer of Sterling; her brothers, Earnest Hall of Manassas, Jimmy Hall of Ashburn and Barry Hall of Herndon; her sisters, Edith Peters of Herndon, Mary Viar of Gainesville and Doris Smith of Brunswick, Md.; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Feb. 11 at Green Funeral Home, with interment at Sterling Cemetery.

Ralph P. Ahlemann

Ralph P. Ahlemann of Sterling died Feb. 19 at Heritage Hall Nursing home.

He was born Aug. 23, 1916 in Somerville, Ind. He was a church minister.

Survivors include his sons, the Rev. James L. Ahlemann and wife Pat of Aldie, and John E. Ahlemann and wife Gwen of Memphis; three grandchildren, Greg, Ashley and Read; and seven brothers and sisters.

Services were scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 at Christian Fellowship Church, 21673 Beaumeade Circle, Ashburn, with interment at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are by Green Funeral Home.

Glenn A. Hawkins

Glenn A. Hawkins, formerly of Star Tannery, Va., died Feb. 15 at his home in Sterling.

He was born Nov. 1, 1917 in St. Louis, Mo. A veteran of World War II, he was retired from the Maintenance Department of American University.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemarie Hawkins of Sterling; four daughters, Betty Elliott of Strasburg, Carol Dillman and son-in-law Wayne of Berryville, Cheryl Betts and son-in-law Merle II of Inwood, W.Va., Glenna Fox and son-in-law Carl of Herndon; two brothers, Gilbert Hawkins of Purcellville and Elmer Hawkins of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren, Candi Bowers, Kimberly Cockran, Wayne Dillman Jr., Dusty Dillman, Jonathan, Chaz and Stacy Fox, all of Herndon, Tres and Megan Betts, both of Inwood; and seven great-grandchildren, Melissa and Colleen Bowers, Kiersten Cockran, and Justin, Jordyn, Dara and Dalton Dillman.

Services wer held Feb. 19 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with interment at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, Loudoun Unit, 209 Gibson St., Leesburg, Va. Arrangements were by Green Funeral Home.

Marion M. Maylott

Marion M. Maylott, 93, a resident of Morningside House in Leesburg, died Feb. 16 at Loudoun Hospital Center.

Born in Unadilla, N.Y., she was a 1928 graduate of Simmons College, where she received a B.S. in Library Science. She received an M.S. in Library Science from Columbia University in 1932. After graduation, she helped establish the first reference library for teachers in the New York State College system at Potsdam, N.Y.

She served as supervising librarian at Amherst Community Church in Snyder, N.Y. and later was a librarian for Cleveland Hill High School in Cheektowaga, N.Y. until her retirement. She was the widow of the late Carleton F. Maylott, who died in 1993.

Survivors include her son, Richard Maylott of Leesburg; one daughter, Barbara Maylott Haller of Sterling; her daughter-in-law, Elsie Maylott; and four granddaughters, Deborah Haller, Kathy Maylott Lavioilette, Margaret Maylott, and Lisa Maylott Poorman.

Services were held Feb. 19 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, the Rev. Steven G. S. Costello officiating. Interment was at Williamsville Cemetery in Williamsville, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the library trust fund at Amherst Community Church, 77 Washington Highway, Snyder, N.Y. 14226, or the School of Library Science at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway, Boston, Mass 02115-5898.

Shirley Ann Ambrose

Shirley Ann Ambrose, 64, formerly of Wind Gap, Pa, died Feb. 25 at her home in Sterling.

She was a 1953 graduate of Pen Argyl Area High School, attended East Stroudsburg University, and was a graduate of Stroudsburg School of Cosmetology. She was a self employed beautician in Wind Gap for 24 years until 1989. She was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl and Mt. Eaton Church in Ross Township.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Chase of Locust Grove, Ga., Cynthia York of Ashburn and Kimberly Ambrose of Sterling; one sister, Doris Salter of Gulf Breeze, Fl.; one brother, Richard Rundle of Forest, Va.; and one granddaughter, Trinity Conrad of Ashburn.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 3 at Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl, Pa., with interment at Fairview Cemetery in Plainfield Township. Arrangements are by Geurro & Ruggiero Funeral Home in Pen Argyl. The family requests memorial donations be offered to the Lombardi Cancer Center, 3970 Reservoir Rd., N.W. Research Bldg, Suite E501, Washington D.C.

Louise C. Sigurdsen

Louise C. Sigurdsen of Sterling died Feb. 26 at Fairfax Nursing Center.

She was born Jan. 2, 1918 in New York, and was the widow of the late John Sigurdsen.

Survivors include her son, Richard Sigurdsen of Woodbridge; her daughter, Joan Allen of Sterling; one sister, Carol Roberts of Allentown, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday, March 3 at Green Funeral Home in Herndon, where a service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 699, Vienna, Va. 22180.

Marie Sasser Maddox

Marie Sasser Maddox, 93, died March 5 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Leesburg.

She was a native of Maryland and a former employee of Laurel Brigade Inn. She was the widow of the late West Mansfield Maddox, and the mother of the late Donald C. Maddox, Robert West Maddox and Dorothy Rinker.

Survivors include three granddaughters, Gloria Jean Parks of Dunkirk, Md., Dale Rinker of Ashburn, and Gale Rinker of Bethlehem, Pa.; one grandson, Fenton Rinker of Charles Town, WV.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were scheduled for March 8 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, with the Rev. Larry D. Maitlen officiating. Interment was at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.

Jeffrey John Roeder

Jeffrey John Roeder, 39, died March 4 at his home in Ashburn.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Roeder; his mother, Marguerite Ruth Panner Roeder of Clearwater, Fl.; two children, Emily Susan and Christian Robert Roeder, both of Ashburn; one brother, Russell Frank Roeder of Westville, Ohio; one sister, Christine Susan Roeder of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and nephews John Anthony and Robert Jeffrey Roeder.

A Funeral mass was offered March 7 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Ashburn, with Msgr. James McMurtrie officiating. Interment was scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Dale Cemetery in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Northern Virginia, 885 Harrison St., S.E., Leesburg, Va. 20175. Arrangements were by Loudoun Funeral Chapel.
