Edbert (Korkey) Bowers
Edbert (Korkey) Ward Bowers of Sterling died Dec. 26 at Loudoun Hospital Center.
Born March 2, 1932 in Knoxville, Pa., he was a retired truck and auto sales dealer.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn J. Bowers of Sterling; two sons, Neil Bowers of Irving, Texas and Brian Petty of Sterling; four daughters, Connie Hackett of Rochester, N.Y., Gina Bowers of Harrisburg, Pa., Noreen Gannon of Sterling and Ellen Petty of Sterling; a sister, Helen Denney of Normal, Il., eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by another daughter, Rhonda Bowers.
Services were scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. A committal service of scattering ashes will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Arrangements were by

Eileen Damon Atkinson
Eileen Damon Atkinson, 85, died suddenly Dec. 29 at her home in Falcon’s Landing in Sterling.
Born in Cranford, N.J., she attended National Park Seminary in Washington and married Kenneth Biddle Atkinson in 1936. They lived in the Panama Canal Zone until returning to Washington during World War II. In the late 1940’s they lived in Puerto Rico, and from 1950 to 1967, as the wife of a Foreign Service Officer, she accompanied her husband to posts in Rio de Janeiro, Rangoon, Birmingham (England) and Washington. In the later 1960’s she began an interior decorating business from her home in McLean.
She was a member of Kenwood Golf and Country Club, St. John’s Episcopal Church in McLean, the DACOR House, McLean Garden Club and Candlelight Dance Club.
Survivors include two sons, David, of LaPaz, Bolivia, and Richard, of Santa Barbara, Ca.; a daughter, Lynn Smolen of Akron, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 6715 Georgetown Pike, McLean. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, Ok. 73101.
Arrangements are by Loudoun Funeral Chapel of Leesburg.
Maybelle E. Cordell
Maybelle E. Cordell, 77, whose family had moved from Ashburn to Berryville in 1999, died Dec. 31 at Winchester Medical Center.
A native of Maine, she had worked as a repair dispatcher for the telephone company.
Services were held Jan. 4 at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, Father Rousseau of St. John’s Catholic Church officiating.
She is survived by a son, Dennis L. Cordell of Alexandria; a daughter, Alice C. Stoner of Berryville; two brothers; two sisters; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was the widow of Joseph Louis Cordell.
Betty Jean Jones
Betty Jean Jones, 59, a life-long resident of Loudoun County, died Dec. 28 at Loudoun Hospital Center.
A resident of Sterling for most of her life, she worked for many years at Woolco and Jamesway.
Survivors include her husband, Alan
Jones of Sterling; a daughter, Linda Parsell of Leesburg; a son, David Parsell of Sterling; one step-son, Alan
Jones Jr. of Richmond; her aunt, Bertie Kerns of Herndon; grandchildren Kevin Flynn, Matthew Flynn, Brandi Parsell, Chad Paarsell and Jessie Jones; and nieces Deidra (Dee Dee) Campbell, Dianna McDavid, Darla Dillow and Tina Murphy; and newphew Darryl (Pete) McDavid.
Services were held Dec. 31 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, with interment at Union Cemetery.
Veronica Wilkes Rodgers
Veronica Wilkes Rodgers, 80, died Jan. 1 at her home in Ashburn. She once served in the War Department as a secretary to Gen. George Patton. She was a native of Hatfield, Massachusetts.
She is survived by a son, William Rodgers of Ashburn and daughter-in-law Susan Rodgers; her sister, Helen Rudy of Massachusetts; grandson James Michael Rodgers; and granddaughters Katie Rodgers and Kristie Rodgers, both of Ashburn, and Rhiannon Tabaka of Pennsylvania. She was the widow of Cyril E. Rodgers.
Services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Jan. 5 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Ashburn, Father Michael Duesterhaus officiating. Interment was planned for Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Md. Arrangements were by Colonial Funeral Home of Leesburg.
Paul Bereznak
Paul Bereznak died Jan. 5 at his home in Sterling.
Born Dec. 4, 1933 in Freeland, Pa., he had been employed as a cartographer for the U.S. Government. He was the husband of the late Carole Therese English Bereznak.
Survivors include one daughter, Diane, and son-in-law Michael Baker, of Ashburn; and nine brothers and sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Jan. 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were by

Duane (Punk) Jessup
Duane (Punk) Jessup, a former Social Studies teacher and coach at Herndon High School, died Dec. 17.
He was born Feb. 28, 1934 in Darke County, Ohio. He lived in Sterling for ten years and in Nashville, Tn. for 20 years. He was a deacon at Rural Hill Church of Christ in Antioch, Tn. and active in the Prison Mimistry for several years.
He is survived by brothers Edward Jessup and Paul Jessup; children Linda Hood, Randy Jessup, Kimberly Kimberly and Laura Bruner; grandchildren Amy Graf, Carie Embry, Casey Pyle, Katie Kimberly, Jeremy Kimberly, Austin Kimberly, Jordan Bruner and Lydia Jessup; and step-grandchildren Eddie Gier, Katie Gier, Angela Learned and Aaron Hood.
Hazel Gladys Collins
Hazel Gladys Collins of Sterling died Jan. 5 at Loudoun Hospital Center. She was born Dec. 21, 1918 in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Herbert E. (Lefty) Collins of Sterling; three children, Gary A. Collins and wife Dawn of Atlanta, Steven M. Collins and wife Mary Anne of Fairfax, and Jeanne E. and husband Alan Dutton of Sterling; six grandchildren, Audra, Tiegh, Lance, Jeff, Jason and Christopher; and one sister, Dorothy Jennings of Chattanooga, Tn.
A service was held Monday, Jan. 10 at Sterling United Methodist Church, with interment at Sterling Cemetery. Arrangements were by

Melvin Wade Sullins
Melvin Wade Sullins of Chantilly died Jan. 16 at Loudoun Hospital Center.
He was born Jan. 15, 1921 in Rugby, Va. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Sullins.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Sullins of Chantlly; one daughter, Cora Swett of Nokesville; two sons, Ronald Sullins of Fredericksburg and Gary Sullins of Front Royal; and ten grandchildren.
A memorial service was scheduled for Jan. 20 at
Green Funeral Home in Herndon.
