Hilja Nyberg
Hilja Nyberg, 94, of Sterling and formerly of Long Island, N.Y. died Sept. 2 in Reston.
She was born in Virolaht, Finland, and was preceded in death by her husband, Gustav V. Nyberg. Survivors include her son, Robert, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Nyberg of Potomac Falls, Va.; grandsons Dr. Robert E. Nyberg and wife Renee of New Bern, N.C., Richard W. Nyberg and wife Stacy of Melbourne, Fl., and James P. Nyberg and wife Alice-Anne of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Martha Pekkola of Finland; and a great-granddaughter, Shelby Nyberg of Melbourne, Fl.
Prayer services were held Sept. 5 and a funeral service was held Sept. 6 at Community Lutheran Church in Sterling. Interment was private.
Maurice Wiley
Maurice Wiley, 54, of Reston died Sept. 3 at the Hospice of Northern Virginia in Arlington. A native of Leesburg, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an Ironworker and re-bar tyer in civilian life.
Survivors include two sons, Maruice L. Gibson of Sterling and Derek McDaniel of Reston; a daughter, Cynthia Whiting of Washington; five step-children, Carita McDaniel of Winchester, Christopher
Carter and Teresa Carter, both of Herndon, Kelly
Carter of Manassas and Karen
Carter of Reston; seven brothers and sisters, James Wiley of Winchester, Clarence Wiley of Reston, Ralph Thompson of Sterling; George Wiley of Reston, Stanley Wiley of Inwood, W.Va., Lena Wiley of Leesburg, and Wilhemina Wiley of Sterling; and two granchildren and others.
Funeral services were scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel in Leesburg, with interment at Quantico National Cemetery.
Kenneth Elliott Fromm
Kenneth Elliott Fromm of Great Falls died Sept. 14 at Columbia-Reston Hospital.
Born March 19, 1921 in Bellefonte, Pa., he was a retired heavy equipment sales representative with A.E. Findley & Associates. He was a graduate of Bellefonte High School and attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. He worked for the Bendix Corp. in Philadelphia during World War II and later owned and operated a limestone quarry in Muncy, Pa.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; daughters Lynn McNaughton of Exton, Pa. and Mary Lou Peters of Mt. Holly, N.J.; four grandchildren and one great-grandaughter.
A Masonic service was held Sunday, Sept. 19 at
Green Funeral Home in Herndon, with interment at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
Hazel Gray Matthews
Hazel Gray Matthews of Great Falls died Oct. 28 at Falcons Landing.
Born May 27, 1914 in Loudoun County, she worked for more than 20 years as a payroll supervisor for Equitable Life Insurance Company. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Matthews, and a sister, Dorothy Robey.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn and Don Lawson and Betty Jane and Bob Oliver of Herndon; two sister, Elsie Stehle and Gladys Dickerson; four grandchildren, Duane Lawson, Cheryl Custard, and Holly and Heide Oliver; and five grandchildren, William and Allison Custard and Davis, Calvin and Cory Lawson.
Funeral services were held Nov. 1 at Great Falls United Methodist Church, with interment at Chestnut Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Great Falls United Methodist Church.

Douglas Arthur Perlich Jr.
Douglas Arthur Perlich Jr. of Ashburn died Oct. 25 at Loudoun Hospital Center.
Born Oct. 23, 1947 in Washington, D.C., he had been employed as an auto body technician in the automotive industry. An avid outdoorsman, he was a longtime resident of Sterling.
Survivors include three children, Catherine Perlich Abell and her husband Kenneth James of Ashburn, Jennifer Dawn Perlich of Ashburn, and Zachary Christian Perlich of Culpeper; and one sister, Lynda P. Jett of Chantilly.
Services were held Oct. 29 at
Green Funeral Home, with interment at Sterling Cemetery. Arrangements were by
Green Funeral Home.
Robert John Dean
Robert John Dean died Monday, Nov. 8 at his home in Herndon.
Born April 25, 1921, he was a Marine veteran of World War II and and agent for Prudential Carruthers Realtors. He worked for 25 years for the Veterans Administration and spent more than 30 years in real estate.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy M.Dean of Herndon; two daughters, Susan Dean Canada of Hillsboro and Kathryn Gail Dean of Herndon; and one son, Robert John Dean Jr. of Herndon.
Private services and interment were scheduled in Radford, Va. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Humane Society of Loudoun County.
H.W. (Jake) Groves
Haynes Wilson (Jake) Groves of Falls Church, father of Terresa Groves of Sterling, died Nov. 3 at Hospice of Northern Virginia.
Born Sept. 10, 1935 in Gastonia, N.C., he was a carpenter and resident of Falls Church. Other survivors include three brothers, Harold Groves of Midland, James Groves of Berryville and Robert Groves of Round Hill; and five sisters, Mary Helen Cambio of Summerville, S.C., Frances Curry of Hartsville,S.C., Brenda Howerter of Falls Church, and Margaret Moody and Laura Rogers, both of Gastonia, N.C.
Services were held Nov. 6 at Colonial Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steven G.S. Costello officiating. Interment was at Sterling Cemetery. Memorial contibutions may be made to Hospice of Northern Virginia, 4715 North 15th St., Arlington, Va. 22205.
Maj. Sean H. Doran
Sean H. Doran, 40, a U.S. Air Force Major assigned to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, died of accidential drowning Nov. 4 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
Major Doran, who lived in Potomac Falls, Va., was born in St. Louis and reared in Overland Park, Kan. He graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1981 and earned a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1986.
He had served in the Air Force for 18 years, working in the field of weapons development and evaluation. In addition to stations in Florida, he served with the U.S. On-Site Inspection Team in Russia in support of the SALT agreements. He had served in the Washington area for the past five years and transferred to MIMA last year after being with the Central Intelligence Agency.
He was an avid golfer and ardent booster of Notre Dame athletic teams.
He was a parishioner at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Sterling. He and his wife, Carolyn Bothwell, were on their honeymoon at the time of the accident.
Other survivors include a stepson, Philip Bothwell of Potomac Falls, Va.; his mother, Mary Louise Doran; a brother, Richard Doran; two sisters, Deborah A. Barnes and Marcia L. Doran; three nephews and niece, all of Overland Park.
Ora Elizabeth Ladner
Ora Elizabeth Ladner, 89, died Dec. 13 at Manor Care of Fairfax. She was the mother of Kathleen Bleutge of Sterling.
Born in Fillmore, N.Y., she was a caseworker and supervisor for a branch of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare until she retired in 1976. She was a board member of the Crawford County Community Council for 15 years, a member of Meadville (Pa.) Women’s Club, American Public Welfare, Zonta, and Meadville Lioness Club. She was named Volunteer of the Month in 1983 for her work at Meadville Community Hospital.
Other survivors include a son, David W. Ladner of Princeton Junction, N.J.; four grandchildren, Lora Anne Bleutge-Buckman, Michael John Bleutge, Rebecca Elizabeth Ladner and Deborah Tillman Ladner; and two grand-children.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18 at Byham-Miller-Mizner Funeral Home in Meadville, Pa., with interment at St. Agatha Cemetery.
