Mrs. Helen Evans Puryear, age 88 of Brodnax, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was the owner and operator of the former Puryear’s Store and the widow of Lawrence J. Puryear. She is survived by her son Lawrence L. Puryear and his wife Angela of Brodnax; two grandchildren Lauren Puryear of Brodnax, Brian Puryear and his wife Stephanie of South Hill. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 P. M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Olive Branch Baptist Church,5223 Blackridge Road, La Crosse, VA 23950 or the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.

Mrs. Nancy Lewis Grant
April 3, 1932 - May 26, 2009
Mrs. Nancy Lewis Grant, age 77, of La Crosse, died Tuesday May 26, 2009 in Ruxton Health Care. She was a retired employee of La Crosse Sportswear and the widow of George Wilkinson Grant.
Mrs. Grant is survived by her son, George Wayne Grant of La Crosse and her granddaughter, Ashley Grant of Blacksburg.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday May 29 at 2:00 P.M. in the Southside Baptist Church with interment to follow in the Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery in McKenney, VA. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mr. Sammie Edgar Baird
August 23, 1936 - May 25, 2009
Mr. Sammie Edgar Baird, 72, of Ebony died Monday May 25, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. He was a former Security Guard at Community Memorial Healthcenter.
Mr. Baird is survived by his wife Hattie Moseley Baird, six daughters; Cynthia B. Lohr of Richmond, Sarah Elizabeth Parker of LaCrosse, Tammy Baird of Alexandria, Lula B. Voyles of Richmond, MO., Melissa J. Powers of Rawlings and Beth J. Parrish of Roanoke Rapids, NC., his son Sammie E. "Buddy" Baird, Jr. of LaCrosse, a sister Patricia Conner of Ebony, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a special family friend Mildred Butner of Greensboro, NC.. He was predeceased by a grandson Timothy A. Baird.
A Graveside funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 A.M. in Prospect Cemetery, Ebony. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mr. Lawrence Wesley "Buster" Perkinson, Jr.
July 5, 1915 - May 21, 2009
Mr. Lawrence Wesley “Buster” Perkinson, Jr., age 93 of La Crosse, died Thursday, May 21, 2009 in the W. S. Hundley Annex. He was a retired Station Agent for the former Seaboard Air Line Railroad with 50 years of service, a past Deacon of the La Crosse Baptist Church, a past Master of the South Hill Masonic Lodge No. 297, a member of the South Hill Shrine Club, a former La Crosse Councilman and a former Chairman of the Mecklenburg County Welfare Board. He was the widower of Sarah Ellington Perkinson and is survived by his daughter Elizabeth L. Perkinson of Ashland, his son Lawrence W. Perkinson, lll, of Pinehurst, NC, two grandsons and a great granddaughter. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Monday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in the La Crosse Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 P. M. at the Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southside Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 546, South Hill, VA 23970.

Susie Mae Lynch Dawson
January 31, 1919 - May 20, 2009
Mrs. Susie Mae Lynch Dawson, 90, of Brodnax, died Wednesday May, 20, 2009 at her residence. She was a retired winder at Brodnax Mills and the widow of James Woodrow Dawson.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by several nieces and nephews among which is David “Luke” Lynch of Kennesaw, Ga.
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Helen Irene Bottoms
May 15, 1928 - May 16, 2009
Mrs. Helen Irene Bottoms of Forksville, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 in Community Memorial Healthcenter.
She was a homemaker and the widow of Arthur Lee Bottoms.
Helen is survived by her daughters Carol Ann Clay of Forksville and
Dorothy Diaz of Union Level, a son Nelson Bottoms also of Forksville, a granddaughter Stacey Roberts of Clayton, NC and a grandson Jason Roberts of Jacksonville, NC and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters; Louise Bottoms, Josephine Mason and Janet Conner and three brothers; Richard, (Joe Lewis) Conner, Hubert Conner and William Autry Conner.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to S.N.A.P.S. or the American Heart Association.

Walter Andrew "Uncle Bud" Dayberry
February 2, 1932 - March 14, 2010
Mr. Walter Andrew “Uncle Bud” Dayberry, age 78 of Bracey, died March 14, 2010 at his residence. Born and raised in Knoxville,TN by parents Boyd and Helen Dayberry and his sisters Juanita and Margaret. Graduated from Young High School in Knoxville and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 where he received training in electronics and became a staff sergeant. Transferring to Minnesota, he met Carol Reno, who he married. While stationed in Antigo, WI in the 676th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, their first child Wade was born. After service, he took a job with Engineering Research Associates in St. Paul, MN in 1954. Over the years it became Remington Rand, Univac, Sperry Univac and lastly Unisys. Their second child Wanda was born while in Minnesota. Transferring to San Diego and back to Minnesota in 1956 and then on to Wayne, Pa. where their third child Wendy was born. Transferring to Denver, CO. in 1966 their fourth child Wayne was born. Being transferred back to Burnsville, MD. ,they lived and worked in the Washington, DC area from 1971 to 2004, Bud having retired from Unisys in 1995. In 2004 they retired to Lake Gaston in Bracey where their hobbies and interest included , darts , watching boxing, football, gardening, music, traveling, camping, fishing, boating, carpentry (especially building hydroplanes) , critical thinking games and was an avid animal-lover. Being always helpful to strangers and friends alike, Bud believed no task was too large or too complicated to tackle, including the moving of a two-story garage by himself with help only from boards and stumps. He lived a full and rich life from 1932 - 2010 and for every person he touched they will always respect and remember him. Survived by his wife of fifty-eight years Carol Reno Dayberry, his sons Wade Dayberry of Damascus, MD and Wayne Dayberry and wife Tina of Lake Worth, Fl. , daughters Wanda Meyers of Montgomery Village, MD. And Wendy Smith and husband Joseph of Damascus, Md. , a sister Juanita Reynolds of Knoxville, TN. and nine grandchildren; Jason, Travis, Mandy, Andy, Laura, Danny, Tony, Olivia and Luke, neices and nephews, Gray Wayne, Rex, Leann, Mike, Ricky, Dean and Duane, also his brother-in-law Smitty. He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Smith.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday at 1:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

LaVerna Hawthorne Matthews
Jan. 25, 1926 - Mar. 20, 2010
Mrs. LaVerna Hawthorne Matthews, 84, of South Hill, VA. passed away early Saturday, morning, March 20, 2010 at Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a resident of Pineview Assisted Living Facility, a graduate of Pan-American Business School, a retired sales associate with W. S. Peebles, a devout member for 58 years of South Hill United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, and the widow of James Edward Matthews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Richard Hawthorne, two sisters Margaret Barnes and Annie Myrtle Ozlin and her grandson Eddie Ogburn.
Mrs. Matthews is survived by her daughters Anne Ogburn Crowder and husband Myrl, Linda Matthews Thomas and husband Otis & grandson Jason Thomas all of South Hill, two sisters Frances Hawthorne of Dundas and Mary Hayes.of Brodnax.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. in La Crosse Cemetery, La Crosse. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory.

James Washington Tucker
December 9, 1914 - March 25, 2010
Mr. James Washington Tucker, age 95, formerly of Palmer Springs, VA. died Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the residence of his daughter in Warrenton, NC.
A Vance County native, he was the son of the late James M. and Patty Abbott Tucker.
Mr. Tucker was a well known retired farmer from the Palmer Springs, Va. area. He will be remembered for his life of hard work prior to selling the family farm at auction in April 2006.
He loved the Lord and was a long time member and deacon of the former Tabernacle Baptist Church in Henderson, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-two years Vergie Hicks Tucker.
He is survived by his three daughters; Geraldine Bell (Bruce) of Warrenton, NC., Mary Lou Thompson of Aberdeen, WA. and Judy Melton (Bobby, Jr.) of La Crosse, his son William H. Tucker (Amy) of Lakeland, FL., his sister Reese T. Boyd of Henderson, NC, twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, one niece and five nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 29th 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory, South Hill, Va. by his grandson Randy Curtis with interment in La Crosse Cemetery, La Crosse, Va.
The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Jonathan David "Johnny" Black
May 8, 1947 - March 30, 2010
Mr. Jonathan David “Johnny” Black, age 62 of South Hill, died Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at his residence. He was a retired central office technician for what is now CenturyLink Telephone Company. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Carolyn Moody Black; two daughters Beth Thompson and her son Dylan Wayne, Melissa Conner and husband Scott and their sons Logan Scott and Caleb Boston all of South Hill; and sister Joan Fodera of Booth Bay Harbor, Maine. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph Black and Flora Black Mull and brother Randall Black. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Saturday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery near Chase City. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at the residence at all other times. David Edward Strickler
December 14, 1964 - April 1, 2010
Mr. David Edward Strickler age 45, of Highland Springs, died April 1, 2010 at his residence. He is survived by his son Brandon Dale Strickler and Brandon’s mother Faye Wheat, his mother Shirley Vaughan Strickler all of Mechanicsville, a brother Bruce W. Strickler of Richmond, four aunts; Gilberta Haley of South Hill, Liz Voight of LaPlayta, Md., Ann Pernell of Henderson, NC and Frances Barnes of Farmville, numerous cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father David Eugene Strickler. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lois Pearce Rogers
October 16, 1952 - April 9, 2010
Mrs. Lois Pearce Rogers, age 57 of South Hill, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was co-owner and secretary for Clay’s Auto Repair and is survived by her husband Clay N. Rogers; two daughters Melissa Hudson of La Crosse and Samantha Newell of Bracey; her mother Hazel Clary Pearce of La Crosse; two sisters Phyllis Clary of La Crosse and Anne Crawford of South Hill; her brother Tommy Pearce of Virgilina; two granddaughters, her special friend Betty Compton and her pet dog Gizmo. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 P. M. Sunday at Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation starting one hour before the service. Inurnment will take place later at La Crosse Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 422, South Hill, VA 23970.

May 30, 1949 - April 10, 2010
Mrs. Alease Taylor Wray, age 60, of Brodnax, died Saturday April 10, 2010 in Community Memorial Healthcenter. She was a former homecare aid and a former customer service representative with Holiday Inn. Mrs. Wray is survived by her husband of forty-two years Steve R. Wray, Jr., a daughter Audrey W. Moore and husband Steven of White Plains, a son Stevenson E. Wray and wife Donna of Brodnax, her mother Bernice J. Taylor of Ebony, four sisters Daisey Taylor Jones of LaCrosse, Myrtis Hall of Gaston, NC, Mary Taylor of Ebony and Juanita White of Norlina, NC., two brothers William James “June Bug” Taylor, Jr. and Jessie K. Taylor both of LaCrosse, two grandchildren Angel and Dustin Wray. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. in Crowder-Hite-Crews Funeral Home and Crematory with interment in Canaan Cemetery, Brodnax. The family will receive friends Monday from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family at P.O. Box 422, South Hill, VA. 23970.
