Lucille Covington Fowler, 89, of Chester, died on September 10, 2000. She was the widow of Elijah M. Fowler. She is survived by her daughters, Jennie F. Willis and Ruth F. Tennille, both of Chester and Betty F. Coppridge of Bartlett, Tenn.; her brother, Benjamin W. Covington; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Ruth Mittelstadter. Frances A. Kasdorf, 81, of Fredericksburg, died Sunday, September 10, 2000 after a long illness. Mrs. Kasdorf was an active member of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church for over 33 years. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank W. Kasdorf; their three daughters, Judith K. Webb and her husband, Rick of Denver, Colo., Kathryn K. Purks and her husband, William of Richmond, and Amy K. Gonzalez of Richmond; four grandsons, Andrew B. Webb and his wife, Renee of Dallas, Texas, John A. Purks of Richmond, Michael D. Webb of Denver, Colo., and Adam K. Purks of Richmond; as well as her new great-grandson, Garrett R. Webb of Dallas, Texas. A memorial service will be held at the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 13. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Mary S. King, 82, of Richmond, died September 9, 2000 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the widow of Robert B. King. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce K. Sexton and her husband, Richard P. Shumaker, and Patricia K. Wallace and her husband, Larry D. Wallace; four grandchildren, Chuck L. Sexton, Rene S. Jones, Robert D. Wallace and his wife, Stephanie, and Kenneth D. Wallace, all of Richmond. She was a resident of Brandermill Woods and retired from the Virginia Department of State Police. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Isabelle H. Kulp, 89, formerly of 12 Raines Ave, Sandston, Va., died Saturday, September 9, 2000. She was born May 13, 1911 in Boston, Mass., to the late Miron and Gertrude J. (Burns) Boyd. Mrs. Kulp resided in Sandston, Va. for over 50 years. She was a member of the Sandston Presbyterian Church. Widow of the late Garrett H. Kulp, she is survived by two sons, Henry B. Kulp of Preston, Conn. and Garrett H. Kulp of Sandston, Va.; one daughter, Helen L. Emerson of Center Barnstead, N.H.; one sister, Marie H. MELLETTE
M. Susan Jackson Mellette, M.D., 78, departed this life September 10, 2000. A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Dr. Mellette was graduated from Meredith College and received her M.D. from the University of Cincinnati. Her postgraduate training included residencies at Cleveland City Hospital, at St. Barnabas Hospital in New York, and at Koch Hospital in St. Louis before coming to Richmond in 1954. Dr. Mellette rose through the ranks at the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) to become Professor of Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine before becoming Professor Emerita in 1992 and retiring in 1995. She was a tireless pioneer and caring physician in the treatment of cancer patients using chemotherapy and was responsible for the development of the Cancer Rehabilitation and Continuing Care Program at MCV Hospitals that has helped thousands of patients on the road to recovery. Her many accolades include: AOA, Who’s Who in America, Distinguished Medical Faculty Award, MCV Alumni Association, MCV Dean’s Award for Community Service, Greater Richmond YWCA Woman of the Year in Science and Medicine, Professional of the Year, several American Cancer Society awards, and the National Brotherhood-Sisterhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, an award which she shared with her beloved deceased husband, Dr. Peter Mellette. In addition to patient care, teaching and research duties at MCV, Dr. Mellette also served as an officer or member of numerous hospital, local, state and national committees, including the MCV Admissions Committee, as President of the VCU Faculty Senate, several NIH peer review committees, as President of the American Association for Cancer Education, and as a member of the Advisory Committee on Hospice and of the Subcommittee on Terminal Care to the Virginia General Assembly. Dr. Mellette is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Susan M. Lederhouse of Orleans, Mass.; a son, Peter M. Mellette; a sister, Elizabeth Middleton of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Margot Mellette of Williamsburg, Va. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at the MCV Health Sciences Center auditorium, 1215 E. Gerald E. Miller Jr., 38, of Doswell, Va., died Saturday, September 9, 2000. He is survived by his parents, Gerald and Janice Miller; grandmother, Alma Rose; sister, Cynthia Miller; brothers and their wives, Greg and Tammy, and Jeff and Carol; nephew and nieces, Dennis, Samantha and Jordan. Gerald is also survived by many friends who knew and loved him like a brother and son. His generous spirit, ever willingness to help, and his sense of humor will be greatly missed. Ralph L. Rice, age 80, of Crewe, died Sunday, September 10, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Elazene J. Rice; three sons, Bruce Rice of Houston, Texas, Stuart Rice and Tony Rice of Richmond; three grandchildren, Adam, Erin and Rachel Rice; one brother and four sisters. He was a retired welder with Norfolk and Western Railroad and a U.S. Army WWII veteran. SCHWARTZ
Genevieve Moseley Schwartz died of natural causes Saturday morning, September 9, 2000 at Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville, Va. She was ninety-one. Her niece, Jane Dudley Reeves; nephews, John Marshall Moseley III and William R. Moseley; and grandnieces, Anne Marshall Reeves, Ashlee Reeves, Tahia Moseley and Briana Moseley survived her. She was born Genevieve Moseley on October 6, 1908 at Marshall Place, near Nuckols, Virginia. She was schooled at home, then at Arvonia High School, from which she graduated in 1925. She attended State Teacher’s College (now Longwood College), from which she graduated in 1935 with a Bachelor of Science in Primary Education. She taught at Davidson School (Layton Hall), Centinary and in the Marshall District High School, Arvonia, before continuing her studies at Mary Washington College and Columbia University. She taught for eight years at the James Monroe Elementary School in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where she was active in the Presbyterian Church, the James Monroe Parent Teacher’s Association, the Fredericksburg Education Association and the Virginia Education Association. In the summer of 1946 she married Paul O. Schwartz of Menomonee, Wisconsin. The wedding was held at the family home of Marshall Place. The two lived in Fairfax, Virginia, where Paul taught shop in the local school system. Genevieve taught third grade in the Fairfax school system for seventeen years. In 1981 Genevieve returned to Marshall Place to live with her brother John Marshall Moseley. She enjoyed life on the farm and loved to cook. She gave much attention to her vegetable garden and put up much of her produce for winter use. She was an active member of the Buckingham Women’s Club and the Buckingham Baptist Church. She was an avid letter-writer and had beautiful handwriting. She loved to sing. She was most happy in the company of others and had a genuine interest in people. She will be missed. Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Marshall Place Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at Marshall Place.
